I’ve been waiting for this all year. It drops on Christmas Day. Apparently the second series has already been commissioned, so it must be pretty good.

No Asian at all, or anything else!

I’m pretty sure I spotted a Chinese actor.

Foghead · 28/12/2020 10:57

I’m sure there were a few Asians as guests at balls.

Wond3rment · 28/12/2020 11:01

We really enjoyed it, the perfect binge at Christmas - easy watching.

August20 · 28/12/2020 11:06

Yes I did notice that apart from one or two east asian faces diversity = black and white. There wasn't much in the way of south asian, polynesian, native American etc etc.

There was an in-universe explanation (Queen Charlotte being black opening doors to other black people) but I wonder why they didn't make it more diverse as a production decision and run with a different explanation?

It was a fun watch though - high brow, no. Entertaining, yes.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 28/12/2020 11:12

@August20 please do explain the bee. The fact that it was the last shot made me think it must be of significance.

MoChridhe · 28/12/2020 11:18

The boastful suitor looked south Asian. I think the Duke's mum looked Sri Lankan.

August20 · 28/12/2020 11:28

@SlatternIsMyMiddleName

Ok bee related spoilers below.

In the books the late Lord Bridgerton (Daphne's father) died because of an anaphylactic reaction to a bee sting. As a consequence Anthony is terrified of bees. In one of the books, a young lady he is walking with is stung by a bee and in his panic he attempts to suck out the venom (?). Of course this results in them being caught in a rather interesting position and he is honour bound to marry her etc etc etc

Or this is what I have gathered from google, lol. There could be other bee related major plot points.

August20 · 28/12/2020 11:39

@SlatternIsMyMiddleName

Actually warning for the spoilers in the post above

The first sentence refers to something that happens before the books.
The rest relates to events that occur in the books/after season one.

Celticdawn5 · 28/12/2020 11:40

I had never heard of the books. I binge watched it too and thought it mildly diverting. The costumes and colours were lovely and the wisteria that never faded.
I got irritated by Daphne very quickly,she seemed to be channelling a Downton Abbey drawl.
And I too fast forwarded through the sex scenes.

saffire · 28/12/2020 13:30

@Foghead

I’m sure there were a few Asians as guests at balls.
Looking at the cast list there are perhaps 10 or so South Asian actors. Maybe one or two East Asian. None in any roles with any significance or importance.
Directionerforever · 28/12/2020 15:50

Just finished. Gutted. I absolutely loved it. And I guessed who Featherdown was correctly. Roll on series 2.

Directionerforever · 28/12/2020 16:14

Whistledown! Not featherdown 🤦🏼‍♀️

VinylDetective · 28/12/2020 16:16

I’ve still got the last episode to go. Now I know we discover Whstledown’s identity I can’t wait!

GaryTheDemon · 28/12/2020 16:31

It’s gorgeous, such good actors, lovely locations but...there’s literally no plot at all and the dialogue is terrible. I’ll watch it cause Ive started and it might improve but talk about spending all your budget on baubles and forgetting the tree!

It’s like the crown - highly watchable and utter trash!

GaryTheDemon · 28/12/2020 16:32

Who and/or what is shondaland anyway? Everyone’s like ‘oooh Netflix got shondaland’...so?

Directionerforever · 28/12/2020 17:02

@GaryTheDemon Shonda Rhimes is the creator of shows like Grey’s Anatomy, How to get away with murder, For the people and Scandal. She’s a crowd pleasing serial drama maker and to get original made for Netflix content from the shondaland stable is probably a bit of a coup.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 28/12/2020 17:16

@Directionerforever

Like Ryan Murphy, Shonda has signed a massive golden handcuffs deal with Netflix, all her future stuff will be on there from now on.

Userengage · 28/12/2020 18:36

When the Duke and Daphne are finally, finally getting it on, he undoes his britches, shows his fine arse and says “press my heart a moment”, well that what it sounds like. I rewound it four times and still couldn’t catch it, any ideas?

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 28/12/2020 18:50

@userengage “It will only hurt a moment” - referring to her “deflowering”.

Not that I have rewatched it a few times or anything. Nope, not at all.

Foghead · 28/12/2020 19:17

I hope there’s a season 2 soon. I feel a bit bereft.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 28/12/2020 19:26

With COVID Season 2 could take at least a year.

The Crown isn't back til 2022

PenguinsCantFly · 28/12/2020 20:37

Really enjoyed the series - perfect for binging! Have read books 1-3 on my Kindle but books 4 and 5 aren't available to buy for some reason Sad.

What Georgette Heyer books would people recommend?

GrouchyKiwi · 28/12/2020 20:43

I'm watching episode 4 just now. Taking your sister to a very public boxing mill. AS IF.

Anyway.

All the Georgian and Regency Heyers, Penguins. The Grand Sophy is an excellent place to start.

endofthelinefinally · 28/12/2020 20:46

I wish somebody would dramatise the Georgette Heyer books. My mum had them all.

PenguinsCantFly · 28/12/2020 20:48

Thanks @GrouchyKiwi Smile
