I’ve been waiting for this all year. It drops on Christmas Day. Apparently the second series has already been commissioned, so it must be pretty good.

It's brilliant, loved it! We watched the entire season on Boxing Day Blush

doadeer · 27/12/2020 21:11

Watched it all and loved it for pure escapism.

I just realised I read the entire series years ago the whole lot is in my kindle library 🤣

I thought it seemed familiar!!

AnneBoleyn1536 · 27/12/2020 21:36

It's such trash, but I still binged it.

I can't understand why everyone was salivating after Daphne - she seems a plain Jane, and cursed with a terrible fringe!

cherrypie790 · 27/12/2020 21:43

It's the most addictive shite imaginable. I'm on episode 6.

I had to really fight to get past some of the historical inaccuracies though at the start Grin

It's like Grey's Anatomy on steroids and a bit of ketamine.

Funkypolar · 27/12/2020 22:10

I agree that the Daphne character is hardly stunning, why are they all pining over her?

Up to episode 4 now. Enjoying it but trying to pace myself so I don’t binge all at once!

Empressofthemundane · 27/12/2020 23:02

I’m watching it with my 14 year old. It’s trashy, trope-y, pastiche, and full of historical anachronisms and inaccuracies, but oh so watchable! The previous poster who described it as AU fan-fiction nailed it. A somewhat embarrassing pleasure. The Duke of Hastings is quite handsome as are the brothers, that goes a long way.

Ginfordinner · 27/12/2020 23:13

It's OTT, but great. And the eye candy is worth it Grin

Being a keen gardener I had to overlook the inaccuracies of seeing flowers that bloom at different times of the year being in flower at the same time.

Mykittensmittens · 27/12/2020 23:20

I’m about to have a watch. I was a big fan of Versailles and I do miss a slightly silly romp.

It was directed/produced by Dermot O’Learys wife (random fact for you!)

August20 · 27/12/2020 23:26

@Empressofthemundane

Well just to warn you it ramps up a bit on the R16 front around episode 3. Might be a tad awkward to watch with a 14 year old!

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 28/12/2020 00:09

Another warning about watching with kids. I had a notion of watching it with my 11yr old - soooooo glad I didn’t.

Hot Duke’s backside sees rather a lot of action.

Directionerforever · 28/12/2020 00:14

Yeah I’d be mortified watching it with my 17 year old 😂 plenty of head in muff action! It’s brilliant though. Utter compelling nonsense. I do love pretty much anything out of the shondaland stable though.

Excitedforxmas · 28/12/2020 00:15

Is that sally Webster from coronation street daughter playing the lead?
Dynevor?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 28/12/2020 00:48

Yes, she is! Once I realised, I couldn't 'Unsee' Sally of Corry 🤣

Pickledpenguin · 28/12/2020 00:59

OMG I loved this. LOVED IT. And i hate that simpleton from Galway (Nicola Coughlan) all of the time but think she played her role well. What i would not do to the Duke... hubba flipping hubba. I love a period drama, I love it even more when its like the 2000's without tv's. Nothing to not like.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 28/12/2020 01:15

Without any spoilers - could someone explain the significance of the bee at the end. It obviously was supposed to mean something but I have no idea what.

August20 · 28/12/2020 03:44

@SlatternIsMyMiddleName

I googled it (having not read the books) and it is a nod to an event that happened before the start of the events of the book.

It is kind of a spoiler but the effects of the event are obvious in the show. So I can tell you if you want, it's not a major plot point as far as I know.

BeverlyCleary · 28/12/2020 06:13

This is so enjoyable. Great to see three leading parts for slightly older women who are fully fleshed out characters. It's just occurred to me that it does a better job at passing the Bechdel Test than most modern films.

When I saw it trailed as a racey Jane Austen I imagined lots of female nudity as in Game of Thrones or even Normal People. How refreshing that you hardly see any women even topless - many more make bottoms on display.

www.instyle.com/celebrity/rege-jean-page-bridgerton-interview-2020?s=08 This is a very good interview with the actor who plays Simon. "If we've endured white Jesus for this long, these people can endure a black Duke".

Also refreshing that the actor playing the older brother is openly gay.

queenofarles · 28/12/2020 08:22

Oh god yes the duke , he is ridiculously good looking Blush.
Daphne’s fringe is sooo annoying, more annoying than Sally Hawkins fringe in persuasion, I felt like reaching into the screen and combing it back Grin
I love Nicola but found her just not right for this role.

I remember the meaning of the bee, it’s to do with her Daphne's father ?

Wonder if there will be a second season with Anthony’s story , I think it’s something like a Cinderella story, or is it the other brother Hmm

Oblomov20 · 28/12/2020 08:45

Extremely disappointing. Dh and I just couldn't get into it at all.

Goingcrazzy · 28/12/2020 08:50

I'm loving this. Easy on the brain and the colour blind casting is refreshing. Always loved period drama and it's so lovely to be able to visualise myself in this period without the trauma of issues on race, slavery etc. Lovely!

Empressofthemundane · 28/12/2020 09:27

Thanks for the warnings! We hadn’t got to anything quite so racy as described. Blush

MrsHugsxx · 28/12/2020 10:22

I watched the 4th episode last night. Found it boring at first then started getting into it more on the 3rd episode so will probably finish the series.

saffire · 28/12/2020 10:31

@grassisjeweled

Been watching it. It's fun, I love the high colour and prescribed racial diversity. The Duke is obviously hot, as are the three brothers.

But I'm keeping watching just for Penelope from Derry girls 🍀

That's the thing though - there's no racial diversity. It's black and white. No Asian at all, or anything else! If "colourblind" casting is going to be truly colourblind then it needs to be a mix of many different races. Not just two.
saffire · 28/12/2020 10:35

But apart from the lack of diversity - the series is visually beautiful. Love the costumes and everything is so pretty.
It's not supposed to be a serious take on the regency period- it's just a bit of escapist fun.

Yamayo · 28/12/2020 10:38

Head in muff action... Grin
