He did peak very early, Toddler.

@speedtalker

Caught up last night. Hermine, loved her, amazed at her jelly art work, wanted her to win, but she really messed up last night.

I find Noel and Matt ok, but my issue with them is that I get a sense they don't particularly like the food being produced- Noel particularly. Sometimes he even seems digusted by it. I might be being nostalgic, and I didn't think them infallible, but I'm sure Mel and Sue used to grab samples and seemed genuinely keen on the baking. I think Noel can't talk about food affectionately, so he distracts the bakers with random jokes. But surely the majority of the audience love baking? It makes some of their presenting inauthentic.
Remember when Mel used to go and delve into food history? She seemed genuinely interested.

Yes - I would love to see Mel and Sue back.

I really liked Matt and Noel at first, but they (esp. Noel) are getting on my nerves now.

Dave in articular seems to like to be left to get on with what he's doing - he's just not a chatty person, I think - and Noel seems to delight in poking him with a stick and watching him get increasingly uncomfortable. Matt isn't so bad - he does seem to try to relax the contestants.

I never thought Noel had this slightly unpleasant side to him.

Lelophants · 19/11/2020 12:25

Noel seems a bit bored. I much preferred him with Sandy, also balances out all the men. 0

Sometimes he even seems digusted by it I've been getting that impression too but not before this series, I wonder what has changed. He seems to have lost weight too. I thought Matt was helping himself to cake in the first couple of episodes.

People said Noel was annoying Rahul too and that Rahul didn't 'get' him but R follows N on Instagram and comments on every post (slightly stalkerish) so can't have been too upset by it. Matt was very supportive when Laura got in a state.

Lelophants · 19/11/2020 12:32

There is always someone trolled. A male who comes across as a bit awkward and overly competitive (Dave, Peter gets away swith being so competitive as he's brilliant and squeaky clean). I quite like Laura as she's the underdog who gets anxious and upset but is actually very good! But she's very overweight and messy and other likeable contestants have gone out in her favour, so the poor woman is treated terribly.

iklboogeymum · 19/11/2020 16:27

I'd like to see a Champion of Champions one year.

IntermittentParps · 19/11/2020 17:51

Matt WAS lovely to Laura. I like him more when he's being warm and nice than when he's clearly been scripted/told to arse about.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/11/2020 18:39

@speedtalker

And reading about Laura's treatment on twitter. I'm so angry about it. It's like people think these are cartoon characters. I watch very little entertainment TV, but Bake Off is safe escapism. For people to apply vicious Trumpian rhetoric to it...it's so depressing.
I agree.

I don't care for Laura, but it is horrible to bully someone like that.

Like all the contestants she's doing her best and wants to get as far as she can. I wanted Hermine to stay in. I didn't get what I wanted, but like a grown up I accepted it. But if I'd blamed anyone, it would have been the judges.

However, as Paul says - they can taste the food - we can only see it.

Yes! That would be quite something.

I love the Christmas special Bake Offs. Best watched with a mince pie and a glass of mulled wine.

Fizbosshoes · 19/11/2020 19:58

I think the show has evolved though. I watched some earlier series and it seemed more straight forward baking. I think one of the early series show stoppers was to make a 3 tiered wedding cake. Now it's more like make a life size labrador that can stand by itself using 3 types of meringue and jelly.

crotoneyedjoe · 19/11/2020 20:11

Some of the comments here about Laura are pretty brutal. Fair enough you're sad that Hermine is leaving, but to call Laura 'arrogant', 'vile', 'very overweight' and to speculate that she doesn't bother to clean after herself, etc. is just horrible. Some of the comments about Dave also not nice to read.

This should be a friendly, frothy thread about how tasty creme pat is and bleurgh matcha is.

Twospaniels · 19/11/2020 20:27

I didn’t like that Laura invited Matt to punch his fist into the dough she was making, and then I presume she continued to use that to make her bake (sorry I forget what the dough was for now).

And Noel’s “joke” and gesticulation about the horn was disgusting on a show like this, really unnecessary.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/11/2020 21:11

Agree with both those comments Spaniels

If it was the cornucopia dough it later had her tears, snot and hair mixed in so Matt's fist won't have made much difference.

[quote HotSince63]Laura had to make an attempt to tidy up after herself last night, her mirror glaze was literally dripping off the counter, she scraped it into a receptacle which she then left on the worktop.

And when she was whining to Matt about the technical she wiped her face, ran her fingers through her hair, wiped her nose (all with her hands, not a tissue) and then continued to try and piece together her cornucopia without even washing her hands Envy

ILoveYou3000 · 19/11/2020 21:57

@thevassal well said!!

ilovecardigans · 19/11/2020 22:11

I know that on Saturday Kitchen they have a person who cleans up the studio kitchen after the show airs (Matt Tebbutt mentioned her by name in a recent episode). I would assume that they have a similar person or team of people who clean up the tent and the workstations after Bake Off filming stops for the day.

It would be pretty mean to expect contestants on a lucrative TV show who have spent hours knocking their pan in baking up a storm to then clean down their workstations!

Anyhoo - the trailer for next week's show indicated that this year''s final is one of the closest ever. So I reckon we're in for a treat (I hope).

ppeatfruit · 20/11/2020 08:13

Yes I agree thevassal It's easy to be critical when we're not in the tent in all that heat and stress. We all do thoughtless things when we're stressed out.

This, 100%.

An ex used to work at the same school as his brother, Joe came across as quite nice, his brother is an extremely nasty racist piece of work.
kursaalflyer · 20/11/2020 19:39

Only just caught up and am surprised Hermine had such a bad week. All the contestants have bad weeks but when there are only 4 left and 2 of them do really well it was bad timing for her. Peter to win unless Dave surpasses himself.
