That's exactly what dd aways says about Mel & Sue Polkadots - they seemed genuinely interested in the baking (and the contestants).

SequinsandStiIettos · 14/11/2020 13:25

I bloody loved Jools Holland on Extra Slice.
Me, too.
I am usually Tom Allen snarky about him, because plinkaplonk, because hootenanny, because Jools and his bloomin friends (DH used to call him Jools Begafriend because it was always a thing).
But he was just lovely on Thursday, sticking up for Dave and Laura in skits designed to take the piss (as opposed to 'endearing') and he came across really well.
I will probably still want to smack him at New Year but will remind myself that irl he is very unassuming and was humble wrt his plinkaplonkery.

MaggieFS · 14/11/2020 14:18

I'd forgotten about the historical segments Mel and Sue did - they were really good.

Is Canadian bake off online?

ppeatfruit · 15/11/2020 10:00

I liked that panel on ExtSl. a lot, Sequins Kathy B. was a bit Hmm maybe there's a clash between her and Jo (Who knows?).

Marc was amazing, he came over well, I didn't notice his prosthetic leg till he wore shorts, it must have been a strain standing in the heat all the time.

itsafig · 15/11/2020 10:15

Up the thread people were a bit negative about Tom Allen. I initially agreed but now I love him! Does he practise his sections and recite them on the day? It's all so quick and slick, doesn't ever seem on the hoof.

I don't get the missing raspberry thing. If the bottom right bit is missing a raspberry, then surely bottom left also missing some?

I wonder who bakes the final cake on extra slice? They're so wonderful.

itsafig I posted upthread that I like Tom Allen now, since hearing about his very ordinary family and his eccentricity which wasn't understood by them. He's clever but he does probably have an autocue on the camera in front of him.

ageingdisgracefully · 15/11/2020 11:13

I love TA and adore Jools and his plinkyplonkery. I've seen him live and it's an excellent show.

Omg those jelly cakes. Wtaf? I can't make a proper jelly outta the packet.

Think the final will be closely run between Hermine and Peter. Laura's too messy and Dave's not quite consistent enough.

iklboogeymum · 15/11/2020 11:52

@ppeatfruit - we saw Tom Allen & Suzi Ruffell on their comedy tour a couple of years ago. Very funny and he was lovely to the audience.

ilovecardigans · 15/11/2020 15:04

plinkyplonkery Grin

ppeatfruit I agree about Kathy Burke on Extra Slice. Jools saved it for me with his twinkly, smiley loveliness though. I can't put my finger on what was different about him, but he looks great. I guess there'll be no Hoot as we know it this year though. Sad

Love Tom Allen. Good interview with him in the Guardian the other day:

Episode 1

Sadly no history bits though, I think they're the first things that get cut for adverts!

ppeatfruit · 15/11/2020 15:38

Yes ageing IMO it'll be a close run final between Hermine and Peter. But because it's patisserie week , who has made lovely french styleee patisserie type bakes already ???? Grin

Ref. TA he's an acquired taste obviously Grin if you're not on his wavelength t'would be easy to be offended by his sarky humour.

ilove and iklboogey Grin

I guess there'll be no Hoot as we know it this year though.
They film in July, though, so it could happen with separate tables of 6 - or whatever was happening then.

MaggieFS · 15/11/2020 21:55

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams Thanks for the link!

I'm not offended by Tom Allen. I just don't find him funny.

Oh I do hope so, Captain. I know the Hoot is a total cheezefest, but it's been part of my New Year since I can remember.

I had no idea they filmed it in July though. 😮

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/11/2020 07:53

I can't find any information about this year but they might have been able to record something.

Thanks, Captain. 🤞

Jourdain11 · 17/11/2020 18:51

Looking forward to this evening! I'm rooting for Hermine (as a fellow French West Londonder, who gets annoyed by people mispronouncing crème pâtissière).

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/11/2020 19:37

Team Hermine here too.

ilovecardigans · 17/11/2020 19:46

Hermine for me too. I love her sense of calm. She's very methodical, but also so creative.

I wish I had some cake in. Stupid cardigan.

Wolfcub · 17/11/2020 20:00

Evening all

Wolfcub · 17/11/2020 20:00

Team Hermine here too

jay55 · 17/11/2020 20:01

Evening. I'd love Hermine to win too, failing that Laura over either of the chaps, both of whom annoy me.

PullTheBricksDown · 17/11/2020 20:03

Hermine should excel at this. Bracing myself for an upset.

jay55 · 17/11/2020 20:04

Pru trying to convince herself these are a good top 4.

AngeloMysterioso · 17/11/2020 20:04

How many times do we think Laura will mention Gravesend this evening?
