Anyone else getting excited? The Diana trailer looks great. It's on Netflix on 15th November.

marking my place.

watching episode 2 now.

Gillian Anderson is utterly insufferable as MT. horrendous casting. clearly chosen based entirely on her physical resemblance and nothing else.

thank goodness very little of HBC so far.

still agreeing OC entirely wrong choice for HM.

still loving philip and anne's characters.

feeling very anxious for Diana. wanting to scream into the telly for her to run and not look back.

TheChristmasPrincess · 15/11/2020 22:44

The subtle nods towards the Prince Andrew situation, I know shouldn’t but 😆

CatsOutOfTheBag · 15/11/2020 22:44

@littlebitupset Harry has really suffered. Terrible things said about him on that gossip website

Smallsteps88 · 15/11/2020 22:49

also the poor stag is breaking my heart limping about the forest. Sad

longwayoff · 15/11/2020 23:00

Why has Kanga Tryon been written out of Charles's history? She was his mistress at the same time as Camilla and, being Australian, was far less coy about things. Fred & Gladys is not the love story we all want to think it is.

Janaih · 15/11/2020 23:06

The breathyness and head tilting were irritating, but GA had me sympathising with someone I was brought up to hate so hats off to her.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/11/2020 23:22

I love the show but I'm up to these Charles and Di in Australia scenes and they are so cringe, very soap opera.

JudgeRindersMinder · 15/11/2020 23:28

Is Charles’ posture really as bad as it’s portrayed on this?

Smallsteps88 · 15/11/2020 23:56

Diana's lunch with Camilla!! Shock

what the hell? did that happen? these people are monsters.

Cocolapew · 15/11/2020 23:58

Just watched 2 episodes and I am hating GA as Thatcher. Tbf I don't rate her as an actress anyway, the constant whispering in The Fall was awful.
For me Olivia Coleman is always Olivia Coleman in everything she does, the same as Tom Hanks, I do like her though. But Claire Foy was better, this is a better Phillip than Matt Smith.
Poor bloody stag Angry

CatsOutOfTheBag · 16/11/2020 00:43

I think the stag will appear to the Queen again when Diana dies

UpHereforDancng · 16/11/2020 00:45

I've only just started watching it as it's 'my time' now, so missed series 1 to 3.

I've watched two episodes and am blown away by it all though - so beautifully filmed!

My only problem is GA as Thatcher. In typical US form she's gone method (apparently she had a voice coach) and it's like a parody rather than a portrayal.

Josh O'Connor as Charles is the standout IMO.

Smallsteps88 · 16/11/2020 01:07

on ep 4 now. really not loving this series. it feels very different from the first 2. the Queen doesnt appear to be the Queen anymore. its lost it.

Readandwalk · 16/11/2020 01:29

Episode with the incarcerated sisters. Obvs Margaret disovering it is fiction but that they were dumped in hospital and written off as dead is true. Brutal.

Catsup · 16/11/2020 02:06

Loving it so much! The colour, the costumes, drama and sheer pagentary. As a side note my DB was a serving Scots Guard back in the Fergie scandal days and had a couple of off the cuff Royal face-to-face encounters, and the benefit of a bit of behind the weighty gates gossip mongering. So, so fascinating! But I am a self admitted right auld gawker when it comes to the Royals and/or a bit of celebdom! 😂

BawJaws · 16/11/2020 05:00

I am completely gutted, waited to long for this and and and .... so far it’s shite!

Wtf Maggie thatcher is basically like a parody. Why did the hair and the accent have to be so completely over the top? Gillian Anderson doesn’t inhabit the role so much as camp it up ffs

Olivia Coleman is a dreadful choice for queen, I just don’t think she has the range.

Diana - well I don’t know because I never even made it past the initial meeting between Queenie and Thatcher. But I will say her introduction as very twee and irritating.

So
Obviously I’ll be watching it to the bitter end but I feel so disappointed!

Flaxmeadow · 16/11/2020 05:54

it wouldn't be the first time American or American-targeted media has romanticised those butchers

True

In later episodes other changes I think are made for the benefit of an American audience, and for modern political reasons, are...

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

In real life the alleged Sunday Times falling out with Thatcher revelation was actually about UK home affairs, unemployment, the miners strike, deprivation etc. But in the drama this has been changed to only being about sanctions and the commonwealth.

Also strange, considering Thatcher is so prominent in the series, is that the miners strike isn't mentioned at all !

The people in a, widely reported at the time, famous real life Diana hospital scene have been changed too.

mrscampbellblackagain · 16/11/2020 06:19

I was waiting for the 'chubby' comment from Charles. And pondering more it seemed such a mean thing to say if he did indeed say it as Camilla isn't/wasn't a slender little twig. So if he did say it the purpose was really just to play on Diana's insecurities.

I binged the whole thing yesterday and wow, made me #teamdiana. I know it is fiction but so well done, totally understand why Charles isn't a fan. Do you think Kate and Meghan are watching it in secret Wink

MyPersona · 16/11/2020 07:56

I find it interesting that people say Thatcher put on a deep posh voice. Says something about the times.

She had voice coaching. When she was elected her voice was much higher. It did make her changed voice sound somewhat forced but this portrayal of her is dire, like someone else said, a spitting image caricature. I’m shocked at quite how bad GA is, it’s not like there isn’t loads of material to study.

I think OC is more acceptable in this season. I disliked her in season 3, mostly because she was far too old at the beginning but I suppose because of missing Claire Foy so starkly too, it was such a disappointing change.

Diana is good. It does bring it all back and make me incredulous all over again that Charles and Camilla ever managed to make themselves acceptable.

Amammi · 16/11/2020 08:18

I’ve googled a few of the events and the clothes used in The Crown match the actual outfits very well. Just can’t get over how hideous some of them look. Was it a requirement to wear the whole outfit in one colour with matching hat as Royalty - so people can spot you in the distance - or as it just bad taste? There is an outfit worn by Princess Anne to Charles wedding that looks like few fried eggs. For a woman with a large budget, great figure skin and hair she could have worn anything she liked. It just looked like someone else picked it for her without even looking at her. The only place the RF seem comfortable is in Balmoral in the rain gear and wellies.

southeastdweller · 16/11/2020 09:03

I'm half way through and loving it so far. I thought Tom Brooke was outstanding as Michael Fagan. They didn't show that Fagan had a piece of a broken ashtray with him when he was talking to the Queen - she must have been terrified.

puffin321 · 16/11/2020 09:19

i'm enjoying it, but it's obviously been written by a republican who has zero time for the Queen. Series 1 and 2 showed a real fondness for her and painted her in a far kinder light. I hate OCs interpretation of her and can't imagine this version is anything like the actual Queen. I also felt a pro IRA tone to the first episode. I know they were showing the actual words of the IRA, but they way they chose to do it felt like a tribute to the IRA and almost seemed to justify the murder of Mountbatten

JemimaTab · 16/11/2020 09:29

I’m enjoying it far, but my gif was horrendous people they are/were. I can well believe that they are like that at Balmoral.
One thing though, I thought they would make more of Mountbatten’s death. I was very young when it happened but I do remember there being a lot of talk at the time on how it meant the Royal family were under direct threat from terrorism, and it must have been pretty frightening for them.

Funny thing is I remember people laughing at her 'Margaret Thatcher voice' in 'The Fall'. Now that she is actually playing Thatcher, her voice sounds like a parody.

It did surprise me that a well-known member of the royal family, with a high ranking military background, would regularly go on holidays in Ireland in the 1970s, espcially in a place close to the NI border. I believe they tried to warn him against it, but he insisted.
