Anyone else getting excited? The Diana trailer looks great. It's on Netflix on 15th November.

The dress that launched a thousand meringues! I suppose you could say the same about the fashion for strapless dresses in the 2000s, thousands of women had them, very ubiquitous and not always flattering. Generally, Diana's fashions were watched and followed.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 22/11/2020 09:34

I remember the opposite everyone thinking the dress was awful and being shocked at how creased it was

I liked it but I was 9 at the time

In the beginning of the series you really get a feel for how things were for people the high unemployment the deprivation but not the later 80’s the later the economic boom (not for everyone) the influence of ThatcherIsm, the changes in society

Also surprised Fergie isn’t mentioned more as from day one she was a headache for the royals (or so we were lead to believe by the press) but she certainly didn’t conform

derxa · 22/11/2020 09:36

@Bagelsandbrie

I thought everyone at the time loved the dress?! It’s hideous by today’s standards of course. I remember everyone saying they wanted to look like a “big meringue” on their wedding day for years to come afterwards.
I had a Diana meringue dress and a flower headdress like SF. I looked lovely if I say so myself. Grin
Maireas · 22/11/2020 09:42

derxa I'm sure you looked gorgeous!
All my friends thought it was lovely. We liked Fergie's as well. I look back at pictures and we're all in pie crust blouses, full skirts and court shoes.

Letsbepositive · 22/11/2020 09:58

The £9,000 was the cost (as reported in the paper last week) for the copy of the dress made for the Crown, not the original.

longwayoff · 22/11/2020 10:08

Looked like a toilet roll cover, both Diana and Fergie. Always puzzled me how Fergie could have so much money for clothes yet look consistently dreadful, kitted out in a series of lampshades.

Bagelsandbrie · 22/11/2020 10:11

As a child I always liked the outfits Fergie wore. She always looked so colourful and fun. Typical 80s.

Maireas · 22/11/2020 10:14

looked like a toilet roll cover Or romantic and pretty? Diana was stylish and fashionable. Her look was copied over and over.

I loved my stripy shirts with the collars turned up and my fake string of pearls. Grin

I have no idea whether there’s any truth in the suggestion the the NYC trip was the start of her realising how she could wield her profile for good, but I thought it was very moving.

I’m sure on a personal level she was difficult, but she was an immense, global, force for good - something the rest of the royal family haven’t managed. Anyone know what Kate Middleton feels strongly about? Name a charity she supports? A difference she’s made?

Maireas · 22/11/2020 10:23

I had pearls! Pin tucked blouses, dirndl skirts, lace and frills. I had a gorgeous dress from Laura Ashley with massive pink flowers and lace on the collar and cuffs.
These youngsters (sniff)! One day they'll have to defend cold shoulder tops and beetle brows Halloween Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/11/2020 10:27

A difference she’s made? absolutely, I've got nothing against Kate but she plays it safe. Diana did a lot to change opinions on AIDS.

LightDrizzle · 22/11/2020 10:48

I thought Sarah Ferguson’s dress was really good and still do.
I was 11 when Diana and Charles married. I was gutted when she got out of the coach. All the press coverage was positive at the time but I think it was courtesy, privately everyone went on about it being so creased. I don’t think the colour was good on her. Her makeup was ahead of its time though and excellent. At the time is looked very pared back because makeup was very bold then, triangles of shading under the cheekbones.

Sarah’s dress was clearly brilliantly constructed and fitted. She looked her best self that day.

I thought Diana's dress was meant to be creased.

XherdanShaqiri · 22/11/2020 10:52

I was nearly seven when Diana got married - all I can remember about opinions of the adults in our house was that the dress was so creased, it wasn't that they didn't like the design and style, they were shocked it was so creased!

XherdanShaqiri · 22/11/2020 10:53

Quite possibly! Not sure that messaged reached our front room though...
Bagelsandbrie · 22/11/2020 10:55

I don’t know how they could have made it look less creased? The whole dress was a massive puff ball of fabric - I sound negative but I actually love it. I love fashion and the way it’s changed etc. It was perfect for its time. I think a lot of older people didn’t like it because they were still of the 1960s “iron everything including pants” brigade Grin but actually it was forward thinking and a little shocking and that’s what good fashion should be all about.!

Bagelsandbrie · 22/11/2020 10:56

My fave royal wedding dress is actually the Queens though. Just beautiful.

OwlOne · 22/11/2020 11:00

Agree with you @Housewife2010 the casting is amazing with the exception of OC as the queen. (I like olivia coleman but this just isn't right)

Bagelsandbrie · 22/11/2020 11:00

Some interesting stuff about Diana’s wedding dress here... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedding_dress_of_Lady_Diana_Spencer

OwlOne · 22/11/2020 11:04

@CoronaIsWatching

I watched the first episode. Josh O'Connor is far too good looking to play Charles imo
No! He's perfect, the two of them are both ALMOST good looking
longwayoff · 22/11/2020 11:06

Stunning tiara though. Never seen better.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 22/11/2020 11:32

I thought Fergie’s dress was much nicer and flattering

Diane’s dress may have influenced designers but is fashion always stylish. I think Diana was stylish (not her hair styles though)

I admire her she wanted to make changes and she did under huge pressure to conform. Easy to forget now as it seems ridiculous now just her holding a patients hand who had AIDS was headline news and massively changed opinion along with other charity work she did

derxa · 22/11/2020 11:47

When Diana hugged someone she really meant it. Despite all of her faults this is what differentiates her from other royals and 'celebrities'
People on here are always looking down their noses at the 'hysteria' after Diana's death. But she tapped into the human need to have a hug just like now during Covid.

wowfudge · 22/11/2020 11:57

It was the fabric that was the issue with Diana's dress - that, the fact it had a three mile long train and she and it were squashed into an old horse drawn coach were a recipe for disaster. Iirc, Diana's wedding make up was done by Barbara Daly. As a young, attractive, slim woman Diana very quickly became a huge fashion influence.
