Anyone else getting excited? The Diana trailer looks great. It's on Netflix on 15th November.

No it isn’t

Supersimkin2 · 21/11/2020 05:49

What a shocker - that VHS really put me off Diana - the royal w-ego in full force. How could she have got it so wrong?

Cringeathon.

diddl · 21/11/2020 09:25

Do we think that HMQ has ever used the phrase "a friend of Dorothy"?Grin

@ForeverAintEnough

On episode 3 now! Bit behind everyone else!! Edward came across as a total brat in his luncheon with the queen!! I looked it up and he did go to Cambridge after being let in purely as he was prince given his dismal A-level performance!

Then looked up the other family members and none of them are intelligent! I guess as the royal family originate from whichever fight won their ancestor the position of king back in the day it makes sense they are more brawn (or healthy/longevity of life) than brains!!

I am the same age as Edward and when he was at Jesus I was working alone in a small bookshop in the city. He walked in and had a browse - I couldn't work out why here were two men outside the doors looking a bit shifty to start with, I had a momentary fear that they were going to rob the place! Anyway, we had a brief chat about a book he had a look at and then off they all went. He was smaller than I had expected to be honest. A couple of years later, he was involved with the Cambridge Youth Theatre, as was my boyfriend of the time, and he made a 'surprise' appearance in a show that was produced. We all knew about it but the audience didn't. Very headline worthy at the time...

That's made my day, Snowflake!

BitOfFun · 21/11/2020 13:21

Oops, I meant Snowballer, really sorry!

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/11/2020 13:30

That's brilliant @snowballer.

Thatcher and Diana were polarising figures.
Thatcher is a massive character but not a particularly sympathetic one IMHO.

I DO believe that she was a conviction politician though. She had utter belief in what she was doing. She was a wrecker of communities, and a wrecker of lives, and of solidarity amongst workers. She sold off council houses and other state assets.

The odd thing I found about both Diana and Thatcher was, at a time when women were finally making their way in the world and on their own merits, both of them were heavily dependent on men, Thatcher's career being bankrolled by Denis and Diana's ambitions enabled by a rich, influential man.

Shock Absolute nonsense

I am really enjoying it. Nice easy viewing and an interesting time

I watched part of series one but never got into it but loving this series. The hysteria around Diana and Thatcher dominating everything is very much what I remember of this time

Acting isn’t always the best but I don’t feel that anyone is particularly miscast (I have minuses what the Queen is like in private)

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 21/11/2020 16:14

I am not a fan of Thatchers politics I recognise her steely ambition and intellect Dennis may have managed her PR but she was an incredibly intelligent and driven woman she certainly wasn’t reliant of his wealth

Diana was 19 when she got married her life then was totally controlled by an institution she didn’t have a career as such other than being the future Queen

For £9,000 as reported by David Emanual the wedding dress looked awful.

I was in my early teens at the time . As far as I can recall the real dress was awful. All I can remember was how.crushed it looked when she.arrived at st Paul's.

endofthelinefinally · 22/11/2020 08:38

Yes. The dress was dreadful. They just dressed her up like a doll.

Maireas · 22/11/2020 08:44

Context is everything. The dress was fabulous. It instantly made everything 70s look dated. The huge skirt, the ruffles, the lace, the whole shebang was romantic. She had to have something remarkable for St Paul's Cathedral and marriage to the heir to the throne. Diana worked with the Emanuels and had a very clear idea of how she wanted to look. She got them to add that incredibly long train!

Bagelsandbrie · 22/11/2020 08:47

I thought everyone at the time loved the dress?! It’s hideous by today’s standards of course. I remember everyone saying they wanted to look like a “big meringue” on their wedding day for years to come afterwards.

Clawdy · 22/11/2020 09:03

Yes, at the time most people loved the dress, and the fact that the designers were young made such a change.

wowfudge · 22/11/2020 09:03

I remember thinking it was an amazing dress - I was 8 at the time. I distinctly remember the adults watching the wedding all commenting on how creased it was and I can't recall any of them saying they liked it. The info about the dress in the souvenir pull outs in the papers and in magazines, etc. was all complimentary.

True. And Sarah Ferguson's big floral headdress fuelled a trend in big floral headdresses too!
HilaryThorpe · 22/11/2020 09:26

No of course not everyone at the time loved the dress. I was in my thirties and I and all my friends and colleagues thought it was ghastly. Creased, fussy and ill-fitting. I quite liked the little bridesmaid dresses, but those huge ruffles were awful.

Janaih · 22/11/2020 09:28

My ex sil got married in early 90s and had a dress very similar to Diana's, so it must have had a lasting influence.
She asked if I wanted to borrow it in mid 2000s for mine. Er no.
