Anyone else getting excited? The Diana trailer looks great. It's on Netflix on 15th November.

You may be correct that it's just the storyline, but being sympathetic towards someone is not to exclusion of others.

@Bagelsandbrie

I actually fast forwarded through the whole Michael Fagan episode. So boring.
I fast forwarded quite a lot of it. Him walking around BP was quite funny though.
CaveMum · 20/11/2020 13:32

I did raise my eyebrows at the end of the Fagan episode when they completely neglected to mention that he has since been charged with (and served time) for various offences including assaulting a police officer, stealing a car and dealing drugs.

CaveMum · 20/11/2020 13:39

Re the Diana hugging the Queen scene, didn’t she (Diana) say in the Martin Bashir interview, or possibly her book, that everyone in the a Royal Family was craving attention/acknowledgement and basically just wanted a hug (or words to that effect)? I took the scene to be a reference to that, rather than a suggestion that it actually happened.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of Diana. I agree she did a lot of good work but I also think she (and she wasn’t the only one) could also be manipulative. She obviously had mental health issues, but I recall an interview with Prince William saying he remembers having to comfort his crying mother on several occasions and that struck me as so wrong. A child (and he was only about 15 when she died) should never be an emotional crutch for their parent.

@BitOfFun

I feel far more sympathy for the communities she devastated than for the war-mongering Thatcher. They had to face a lot more than feeling bit awkward at dinner parties.
This.

She was pure evil. John Major and David Cameron; they believed different things to me and I would never have voted for either but I don't think they were evil. Boris Johnson - well, he should never have got to the position he's in, he hasn't a clue.

"I fast forwarded quite a lot of it. Him walking around BP was quite funny though."

I read afterwards that the sitting on the throne but was real according to Fagan.

What I read afterwards was although, as I'm sure you all guessed, that conversation with the Queen never happened, what he said in the episode is what he stated in a radio interview several years later was what was in his mind as the purpose of his wanting to see her.

How much of that he's ret conned in his own mind is anyone's guess though.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/11/2020 14:55

I read that interview and he claimed to have urinated in a bin of corgi food because he couldn't find a door marked WC. I think he is a habitual drug user and a bit of a fantasist, I'm sure he has spent the last 40 years re-telling and embroidering on his story.

In real life, didn't one of the maidservants walk in and say "Bloody hell, Ma'am!!" when she saw him sitting on the bed?

Jesus no, I wouldn't be able to watch it. Cannot stand Ms Quentin.

GrinGrinGrinI do remember that! Adrian Mole was the best. I wonder what he'd have made of coronavirus, lockdown etc.

Gillian Anderson is utterly insufferable as MT. horrendous casting. clearly chosen based entirely on her physical resemblance and nothing else.

Utterly insufferable is probably right!

Not much natural physical resemblance - it's in the acting!

wowfudge · 20/11/2020 17:02

Here's a link to Will Gompertz review. I agree with pretty much everything he's said.

Yes, Wowfudge, that's spot on!

Was Anne ever jealous of Diana?

I would have thought they wouldn't have had much in common & that Anne wouldn't have given a toss about her being in the papers so much?

I would have thought Anne would have been happy to stay out of the limelight.
herecomesthsun · 20/11/2020 18:47

As a blood Princess and Olympian competitor in her chosen sport, famously down to earth, I don't think Anne would have felt at all threatened by Diana. She may well have struggled to understand or sympathise with Diana's insecurities, as they seem to have been very different personalities.

I love 'The Crown' but there are so many instances when you can tell that it's been written by a man. Very little female bonding, but much female jealousy. So Margaret is jealous of the queen and vice versa (possibly true but they were also extemely close); the queen is jealous of Jackie Kennedy (entirely fictional) and now Ann is jealous of Diana. I agree with you and others that Anne would have hated all the press attention Diana got and would more likely have pitied than envied her. Ann just gets on with it.

No I'm sure she wouldn't have been jealous. Diana was a good few years younger anyway and Anne a confident woman in her own right, with a career/passionate interest in which she excelled. From what I have heard, they got on quite well and loved each other's children but didn't have much in common.
CaptainMyCaptain · 20/11/2020 18:55

So Margaret is jealous of the queen and vice versa (possibly true but they were also extemely close); It was 'common knowledge' at the time that HMQ and MT didn't get on.

At what time?

I'm sure they had a complex relationship, like most siblings, but they were extremely close.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/11/2020 19:08

I'm sorry @IcedPurple I thought you meant Margaret Thatcher.

TheRubyRedshoes · 20/11/2020 20:44

Sorry if this is a spoiler but is it true about Diana filming herself onstage of Andrew Lloyd webber?
