Anyone else getting excited? The Diana trailer looks great. It's on Netflix on 15th November.

I do feel sorry for Charles, especially in the earlier series where he was at the awful school then wrenched away from university, where he was happy, to go to Aberystwyth. I felt sorry for him being pressurised to marry someone he didn't want to but when he set spies on Diana while blatantly carrying on with Camilla I thought he was obnoxious. I thought he was petty and spiteful when he was being portrayed as jealous of her popularity but don't know how true that was.

Runningdownthathill · 19/11/2020 14:37

I think its generally acknowledged he was jealous of the attention she got and hated being considered the runner up. Extremely petty and immature .He's spent his life being deferred to and had everyone running around after him.

SenecaFallsRedux · 19/11/2020 14:46

As a PP says, Charles was expected to marry a Princess.

I disagree. By the time he was old enough to marry, it was perfectly acceptable for the heir to marry someone from the British aristocracy. The Queen's mother was a commoner and when she married the Duke of York, he was second in line to the throne.

Also, Elizabeth's parents (especially her mother) are known to have wanted Elizabeth to marry someone in the aristocracy rather than Philip. Eligible young aristocrats were invited to Windsor Castle during the war as possible matches for Elizabeth.

There were very few eligible princesses around for him to marry.

VanGoghsDog · 19/11/2020 14:49

The late Diana, Princess of Wales was born a commoner even though she used the title ‘Lady’. That is a courtesy title that simple says ‘I am the daughter of a Peer of the Realm, wife of a knight or baronet, or wife of an Marquis, Earl, Viscount, Baron and I don’t won’t to use my full courtesy title’.

This isn't quite complete (from the article linked above).

A daughter of an Earl (etc) is Lady First Name
A wife of an Earl is Lady Surname.
A daughter of an Earl who married an Earl is Lady First Name Surname because she has both.

IcedPurple · 19/11/2020 14:53

Technically, every female in the realm is a commoner with the exception of HMTQ herself. This includes her daughers and granddaughtrs, since the titles of 'prince' or 'princess' do not confer any special status. A prince or princess without a peerage is technically a commoner, and since (with a tiny number of exceptions) only males can hold peerages in their own right, all women other than the sovereign have the status of commoners in the English peerage system.

Julia Carling. Difficult to have sympathy for Diana after her contribution to that, surely? I wont forget the news footage of Will Carling leaving his wife and new baby. Disgusting man.

Did they have a baby together? I can't remember a baby but it's a long time ago

I didn’t think so and I’ve just checked again and they didn’t.

longwayoff · 19/11/2020 17:15

You're right @MyPersona and I apologise for misleading everyone. It was his abandoned first wife, Julia, who exposed Mr C's affair with Diana. It was Ali, his abandoned, about-to-get-married, mother of his child that he left in the way described. So Diana only featured in the first instance. Mr C left Ali for the wife of one his team mates.

Will “bum chin” Carling was a total shit ! Wonder what woman is daft enough to be with him now?

An interesting article about Will Carling

Oodlesofnoodles20 · 19/11/2020 18:51

My mum has always been team Diana through and through. I quite like Camilla and Charles and if I ever mention them she gets really really huffy!

Clawdy · 19/11/2020 19:21

Carling has always denied any relationship with Diana. The press thought otherwise. As stated earlier, he did not leave a wife and baby for Diana.

southeastdweller · 19/11/2020 19:31

In an interview with the Mail on Sunday in 1995, Julia Carling said “I am sad that Will put himself in that position, and that the princess did as well. This has happened to her before, and you hope she won’t do these things again, but obviously she does."

Interestingly, Diana never mentioned any of her extra marital affairs to Andrew Morton - perhaps she didn't want to alienate the public.

Bagelsandbrie · 19/11/2020 20:50

I’ve just had a google and it seems Dominic West is due to play Charles in seasons 5 and 6 Shock I can’t see it at all. I think I’m just too attached to lovely Josh Grin he did such an amazing job.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 19/11/2020 21:04

Is there evidence to suggest they were that unhappy ahead of the wedding and that the conversations between Margaret and the others and the Queen and Charles took place? Really horrendous.

ivykaty44 · 19/11/2020 21:12

Im sure the jag in one episode with Princess Margaret was a 2007 edition in 1980s

wizzbangfizz · 19/11/2020 21:31

Dominic west?! Surely not?!

Late stage discussions apparently ...!

ForeverAintEnough · 19/11/2020 21:41

On episode 3 now! Bit behind everyone else!! Edward came across as a total brat in his luncheon with the queen!! I looked it up and he did go to Cambridge after being let in purely as he was prince given his dismal A-level performance!

Then looked up the other family members and none of them are intelligent! I guess as the royal family originate from whichever fight won their ancestor the position of king back in the day it makes sense they are more brawn (or healthy/longevity of life) than brains!!

longwayoff · 19/11/2020 22:24

They have people to do everything necessary for them. They have people to be clever for them too. They just do the really important stuff. 🤴

wowfudge · 20/11/2020 07:18

The series started well, but it's very patchy. Gillian Anderson appears to be playing Mrs T in her 70s and it's a very arch performance. I do feel sympathy for Thatcher though, I had no idea she was an outsider due to the class system. Olivia Coleman is just not regal. The Michael Fagan stuff was so far fetched - I mean the things he said to the queen which they've had to make up, but I thought it was too theatrical and unrealistic.

Bagelsandbrie · 20/11/2020 07:21

I actually fast forwarded through the whole Michael Fagan episode. So boring.

That's the reason Gary Lineker wouldn't appear on something Carling was on at the time - Ali Cockayne was his sister in law.
Clawdy · 20/11/2020 08:36

I could never have any sympathy whatsoever for Thatcher, and I certainly don't believe she was treated as an "outsider due to the class system". That was never said about Harold Wilson, as far as I remember, and I assume it's just part of the storyline.

IcedPurple · 20/11/2020 09:44

Gary Linekar wasn't exactly an exemplary husband himself.

BitOfFun · 20/11/2020 11:00

I feel far more sympathy for the communities she devastated than for the war-mongering Thatcher. They had to face a lot more than feeling bit awkward at dinner parties.
