Anyone else getting excited? The Diana trailer looks great. It's on Netflix on 15th November.

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius

There is a guide to the ibble dibble game here , *@Andylion*.
😁 Thank you @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius. I had no clue there was a cork involved and had forgotten all the marks on their faces.

I might suggest this game if we have a Zoom Christmas this year.

I think the whole point of the ballet scenes and the later excruciating home video was that Diana was deluded of her talent. She was most likely rubbish at ballet as a child and never pointed her feet right then! She wasn't a talent in that field and that's exactly what the actress portrayed.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/11/2020 20:06

And she only got the part of a tree in the school play.

Candleabra · 18/11/2020 20:19

* I feel like it’s lost it’s authenticity- the first two seasons were factually accurate even if the dialogue was made up based on information. Now a huge amount of the time line is made up.*
Totally agree.

Smallsteps88 · 18/11/2020 20:21

Also it only mentioned one IRA bomb? I grew up in the 80s near a big (English) city and the bombs and threats were huge back then.

They only mentioned the one because it affected the royal family. The programme is about the life and events that impacted them. It wasn’t about the events of the time in general.

Getthekettleon2020 · 18/11/2020 21:25

Just finished episode 2 and I cringed for Maggie. No love for her as I was raised in a coal mining community. I think GA has had something done with her teeth and she seems to be straining her neck.

XherdanShaqiri · 18/11/2020 22:11

@longwayoff

Julia Carling. Difficult to have sympathy for Diana after her contribution to that, surely? I wont forget the news footage of Will Carling leaving his wife and new baby. Disgusting man.
Did they have a baby together? I can't remember a baby but it's a long time ago.

Method acting...!!!!!
bakingdemon · 18/11/2020 22:25

We're sticking with it, but don't want to binge as we did with the first two seasons. There's so much in it that you just think would never ever have happened.

Diana studied ballet as a child. I think the actress was just clueless where ballet is concerned.
Cocolapew · 19/11/2020 00:24

Did Thatcher really sit all wonky like GA is doing and what's with the neck?
Also has GA had lip fillers, it looks odd. Her hair gets bigger with each episode, I'm expecting in the last one to see nothing but giant hair with a pair of shoes sticking out of the bottom.
I was about 12 at the time of the Royal wedding, looking back now I can't believe how young Dian

Ritascornershop · 19/11/2020 03:43

But she did have madly massive helmet hair. At the time I loathed her hair and felt very badly for Dennis ever having to touch her head.

Runningdownthathill · 19/11/2020 05:38

She's got the way Thatcher walked and talked for me. I think it's an incredibly hard part to play really. Thatchers hair was extremely helmet like, so that is realistic. I do think all the tearful lip trembling stuff is over the top though. Thatcher only ever displayed emotion when she left Downing Street.

LightDrizzle · 19/11/2020 06:13

There are photographs of Diana in ballet poses and she just doesn’t have the right line, fluidity, turn out or high arches.
I saw coverage at the time of the Wayne Sleep dance and found it rather cringe making. The height difference didn’t help but I think that style suited her better than ballet. She was a bit wooden when dancing with John Travolta too, better than I’d have been, but she didn’t look like a dancer.
I think the director and actress got it about right, she looked like a competent and enthusiastic amateur who wasn’t naturally gifted.

Thank you for that @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius. I’ve not watched this yet so didn’t know what ibble dibble was but we used to play this years ago and called it the Spot game.

I’m number One Spot, I’ve got no spots. How many spots has number Three Spot got? And so on until we couldn’t play through 😂 so much or were too drunk to care. Ah, happy times 😃

Cocolapew · 19/11/2020 06:44

I had a google, Maggie can sit up but looks like GA can't Grin. MT did have helmet hair but it wasn't always as big as being protrayed, I wonder if she did it herself?

As a PP says, Charles was expected to marry a Princess. Trouble is there were not many around who were either interested or were not Catholics. Diana was a commoner, even though calling a Lady a commoner seems ridiculous to the likes of me. A commoner means "not royalty." So he was already going down market by marrying Diana, Camilla would have been beyond the pale! Thank goodness Charles has been able to support William to marry the woman who was right for him, due I would say to this depressing experience of being expected to pick a wife from a set of candidates that in reality don't really exist.

(Harry's choice of wife didn't matter so much, neither did Andrew's, as by the time they married their older brother had had children and they had dropped down the succession. The Queen Mother was "only" a lady but not expected to be Queen so that was ok, this was also perhaps what made the Firm relax their attitude to commoners as she was apparently instrumental in the Charles/Diana match).

Very few heirs to the throne have married commoners. Henry VIII was one of course, and that went well. Another King married Elizabeth Woodville , there may have been others but very few.

So I don't think Camilla would have been expecting a proposal.

MissEliza · 19/11/2020 07:12

I've watched several episodes now and it's just awful. The Michael Fagan episode was particularly tedious. Morgan wants to turn him into a victim of Thatcherism who just wanted a sympathetic ear from the Queen.Apart from being a very political and questionable point of view, it made for a very dull and boring episode.
Corrin is probably the best actress to play Diana ever but her character is whiny, weak and immature. Diana Diana was fragile but she was also charming and funny. Some of the scenes are ridiculous, such as when Diana only discovers that William will be staying on a farm while they're touring and has an argument with a courtier about it. A courtier would never speak to a royal like that.

Runningdownthathill · 19/11/2020 07:31

I don’t think it’s true that Charles was expected to marry royalty. None of the women he went out with were royal. Yet several were considered marriage material. I don’t think the daughter of an Earl could be considered a commoner either. Kate is a commoner.
Camilla was part of his ‘set’, but she didn’t want to marry Charles anyway by all accounts.

longwayoff · 19/11/2020 07:38

Yes, @XherdanShaqiri, they did have a baby. She found out by chance that he was leaving and there was heartbreaking news footage of her absolutely distraught, in tears, clutching baby, as he got in car without acknowledging them and drove off. Beyond disgusting. Google Will Carling Ali Cockayne. Irish Times article covers Mr C more than adequately. Can't find any trace of photographic evidence but the cleaners have missed this account.

BalloonSlayer · 19/11/2020 07:40

The definition of a commoner is someone who is not royalty. It doesn't matter what you or I "consider," it's what it means. It was all over the news at the time, 'The Prince of Wales is marrying a commoner,' to general incredulity. I am old enough to remember it very well. And all the other European princesses that were put forward for Charles, Princess Caroline of Monaco (Catholic so no go), Princess Marie-Astrid etc.

BalloonSlayer · 19/11/2020 07:47

Sorry my point is that yes, the commoner/royalty thing is ridiculous, but it was an actual thing then, and it is the crux of what made Charles unable to consider Camilla as a bride at that time. It also meant that Diana's "achievement" Hmm in bagging a man who should have married a princess probably helped to blind her to the lack of love.

They were clearly not on an equal footing. He was her superior in age, social standing, wealth and intellect. He had all the power. I hope that's not the case with William and Kate.

Saying it wasn't like that

BitOfFun · 19/11/2020 11:07

There's a very informative explanation of who is a "commoner" in the first reply here. It was written a few years ago, so some of it is out of date, but the author seems to know what they're talking about. An interesting point is that William and Harry were both technically commoners until they got married!

Bagelsandbrie · 19/11/2020 12:54

Am I the only one who feels a bit sorry for Charles after this season? Blush I know no one is ever supposed to say that as it’s always Team Diana everywhere but goodness me what a sad life he’s had really. Privileged, yes. But on a personal level so sad really. Neither parent ever loving him or really caring about him. Marrying a woman he didn’t love to try and keep the peace / respect the traditions etc. It’s horrible being stuck in an unhappy marriage. I actually ended up feeling a lot of sympathy for him which I never expected to!
