Anyone else getting excited? The Diana trailer looks great. It's on Netflix on 15th November.

  • Where were the Spencers? Why wasn't nobody by Diana's side?

The Spencers were themselves VERY dysfunctional. Earl Spencer very memorably defended her in death but gave her little help in life, both Princes were very upset by his eulogy, and saw very very little of him afterwards

Can't find a decent source over the brothers rift with Spencer because all you get is Harry and Meghan stuff - he has a slightly better relationship with Harry but there was a terrible rift for many years apparently.

@cheezy

This MUST have been mentioned already but Andrew is played by the actor who was the strange stepson in Fleabag Shock
It's Edward not Andrew, the youngest He also plays josh archer and is the son of Celia Imrie

I agree the Spencers were rather dysfunctional. The mother left and the father remarried Acid Raine who did not get on with the children.

They don't give the impression of being a particularly close family. One of the older sisters is married to an aide of HMQ. The match was encouraged by Ruth Fermoy, who was a close friend of the Queen mother. Fermoy was Diana's maternal grandmother. There were many vested interests in the marriage.

And yes, even in the early 80s Diana would have needed to have been "unsullied" to be a suitable match.

Andrew's relationship with Koo Stark was also discouraged (she was a certain type of actress allegedly).

No idea if this actually happened, but when Charles asked Sarah not to warn Diana that he was going to ask her out, I thought what a crappy sister she was.

Frequentflier · 16/11/2020 22:29

Found the Fagan episode very moving and well done.

Frequentflier · 16/11/2020 22:52

So no moving conversation then? Why can't we have anything nice in 2020? 😂

Clawdy · 16/11/2020 22:56

As I remember at the time, it was assumed Charles should marry a princess, and a Princess Astrid was often mentioned as being the choice - the tabloids liked her and started calling her "Asty" ! It didn't work out, though.

Schoolchoicesucks · 16/11/2020 22:59

Only seen episode 1. Finding GA as Thatcher very hard to watch. She has been made to look too old and the speech and manner is like a caricature or bad Thatcher impression. Surely as actors, they just need to bring their characters to life - yes to have a resemblance, but not to do an overblown or over exaggerated impression.
Does she tone it down or do you get used to it?

longwayoff · 16/11/2020 23:01

Reading coverage of Diana's funeral, one of the locals waiting at the gates of Althorp to pay his respects to Diana, said to a reporter "What you have to remember is, the Spencers are just as mad as the Royal family". At the time of her death, she wasn't talking to her mother. She wasn't talking to her brother. He wasn't talking to his stepmother and was not on good terms with his own wife. Diana wasn't on good terms with either of her sisters. Any one of them could fall out with themself in a phone box. Just as dysfunctional as the royals.

@WoodYewBee

anyone spot John Major next to Thatcher in the house of commons?
yes I did!

he is the first prime minister I remember.

JamieFrasersSwingingKilt · 16/11/2020 23:19

@Posteni1

I can’t get over the fact that Philip raped Jamie Fraser... but that’s just me...
Believe me, I struggle with this too!! Have you seen my username for goodness's sake?!
lunalulu · 16/11/2020 23:27

This series is fucked up. So much of it is luvvie nonsense. It is almost criminal, I think. Really rotten. Anyone's family would be devastated to be subject to so much made-up crap. It's shameful, IMO. Total bollocks.

And just wtf happened to that woman from the X files?!!! Her voice!!!!!!

WoodYewBee · 16/11/2020 23:29

the voice of MT was overkill.....too pronounced

TheChristmasPrincess · 16/11/2020 23:58

Just watched the episode about the Bowes-Lyon cousins. So sad! I’m glad that we are slowly eradicating the stigma around mental illnesses and disability. Those poor people 😔

Hellisotherpeopleandhorlicks · 17/11/2020 06:43

I thought GA was good at first but I'm on episode 4 now and I can't bear the facial expressions she does. She does a weird thing with one of her eyes and I can't look at it!

I'm enjoying the series in as much as the costumes/scenery are still amazing but am finding the rest of it a bit Hallmark.

They've changed a fair bit, I wonder if it's because, as a previous poster suggested, we are now into more recent times and it's to highlight that it is fictionalised

mrscampbellblackagain · 17/11/2020 07:34

I think my favourite episode was the one in Australia, showed what could have been [romantic]

LondonlovesLola · 17/11/2020 07:42

That’s it! Hallmark films. I loved them but they were so bad!!

toconclude · 17/11/2020 08:19

@derxa

That's astonishingly naive tbh. They were both consummate performers, and fooled a lot of people.

Further to something mentioned upthread, I found this:

www.tatler.com/article/who-was-princess-dianas-grandmother-ruth-roche-baroness-fermoy

I remember reading years ago that Lady Fermoy in fact put Diana off the match, saying she wouldn't be suited to the family at all.

Frazzled2207 · 17/11/2020 08:50

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit

Erin Doherty remains the highlight of these new series
Agree I’m only one and a bit episodes in but she is brilliant. As was Vanessa ? As Margaret in s1/2. Not decided on what I think of Diana yet -or most of the rest of them- but Josh O’Connor doing very well as PC.

Pocket post - no idea how that happened! But seeing as I'm here I thought the actor playing Diana was uncanny in both looks and mannerisms
diddl · 17/11/2020 09:04

"Where were the Spencers? Why wasn't nobody by Diana's side?"

Didn't Jane live nearby as her husband worked for the Queen-although wasn't there a falling out about her book?

And Sarah was a lady in waiting to Diana at some point?

But some people can't be helped imo.

You have to fully buy in to what they say or you're out as far as they are concerned.

Charles Spencer's reasons for not letting her stay seem spurious though-it could have been temporary until she bought her own place!
