Anyone else getting excited? The Diana trailer looks great. It's on Netflix on 15th November.

I don’t know if I believe Diana being portrayed as such a ‘present’ mother. As an aristocrat she and everyone she knew were raised by nannies. UC mothers don’t mother their DC’s so why was she?

well she was working as a nanny prior to marriage so I could totally see her being more drawn to raising her DC herself as much as possible compared to others.

The Queen married for love but Princess M wasn't allowed to.

That's not really true. Letters which recently became public showed that she could have married Townsend but had already cooled on their relationship. She certainly married the future Lord Snowdon for love, since as the first commoner to marry a British royal for centuries, he had nothing to offer her in dynastic terms.

I'm not privy to the inner workings of Camilla's mind or whether Andrew Parker-Bowles was a better catch than The PoW but they obviously had an attachment that has lasted more than 40 years.

My point is that neither she nor Charles ever seem to have seriously considered marriage back then - that's a dramatic licence taken by The Crown. Also, the upper classes in those days - and possibly these days too - did not consider marriage any sort of impediment to having relationships with other people.

I'm absolutely loving this series!
The juxtaposition of the scenes of working class people and popular music with the increasingly anachronistic royal family are brilliant. Olivia Coleman isn't as good as Claire Foy was but I'm enjoying her. She needs to posh up the voice a bit though. Charles and Diana are spot on and princess Anne is just brilliant.
I think Gillian Anderson is doing a great job too. She's obnoxious and prickly and arrogant and fits the role well.

Smallsteps88 · 16/11/2020 18:58

I suppose its possible Camilla was astute enough as a young woman to see how her life as PoW would have been and knew that married life with APB would offer her a great deal more freedom than she could ever have as a royal. plus as was clear in the show, it was accepted within the royal family for people to have 'arrangements' and Charles was no different. Im sure Camilla knew she could have her cake and eat it by not marrying Charles, but marrying him (back then) would limit her life dramatically.

Gillian Anderson is the bit I'm still struggling with. I can remember Thatcher vividly and she's not doing it for me.

happilybemused · 16/11/2020 19:14

I'm actually liking Margaret Thatcher. My 1980's child would disown me 😂

I was 25 in 1980. I hold her responsible for the state society is in today. I still don't think GA sounds like her.

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius

According to the Aimee today, all the stuff about Balmoral and Thatcher, and the ‘tests’ is fiction - they make their guests comfortable, and Thatcher never left early.
Arghhh - I didn’t proof read - that should be “According to the Times today....”

Sorry.

I don't think it would have occurred to Camilla to see Charles as a future husband, or vice versa. She was part of the posh set. She knew the score. No way could a Prince of Wales marry an upper class but non-aristocratic woman with something of a 'racy' reputation. My guess is she and Charles were surprised that Diana - herself an aristocrat with a 'colourful' family background - did not share their pragmatic attitude to marriage.

I remember watching the news with my Gran and asking my Gran (in my 5/6 year old way) what she would do if she met Thatcher and my Gran said she would hit her with her handbag Grin I asked what she would do if she met the Queen and she said she would kiss her feet Grin that’s always stuck with me.

My Gran also told me the Queen wore a sponge between her legs incase she ever needed a wee and was out on public duty and wasn’t allowed to go.... Grin I believed that for years.

I can't really focus on GA's MT because I am transfixed by her hair. It seems to get bigger with each episode.

I agree!
Ritascornershop · 16/11/2020 20:49

Aside from that the makeup dept made GA’s Thatcher look too old, I find her very reminiscent of Thatcher. She comes across as odd, a zealot, utterly lacking in empathy - that the Thatcher I remember. And she did have helmet-like hair!

WoodYewBee · 16/11/2020 21:04

anyone spot John Major next to Thatcher in the house of commons?

Jourdain11 · 16/11/2020 21:06

Do you think the reason actors have such a hard time portraying Diana and Thatcher is that both women were such "actors" themselves in public life? Whenever I see footage of either of them, it feels like they're performing a role.

No Both women had charisma that can't be replicated by acting
Rewis · 16/11/2020 21:30

okay, watched the series and here are some thoughts:

  • The quality of the show is still great. Make up, clothing, sets etc. are great but the stories were a bit underwhelming
  • What's with the bad posture and head tilts?
  • I'm not British and I was born in the 90's so I don't have personal memories of Thatcher. GA's accent did not bother me adn to me it was lose enough for this type of potrayal. My bf found her slouch and accent annoyed him. Several times he said "Thatcher would not do that. She glided, she wasn't awkward. She would not have given a shit about that" etc.
  • Where were the Spencers? Why wasn't nobody by Diana's side?
  • I though Diana knew the Windsors? Especially with her grandmother being a lady in waiting. It just came across weird
  • I was hoping for a Thatcher/Regan storyline
  • Where wes Anne's family? Her husband was mentioned but no mention on her kids
  • Anne and Charles actors were looking a bit too young in the end
  • Camilla had some guts! I was initially nanoyed how they made Charles and Diana look like Romeo and Juliet but thankfuly towards the end it was made clear that it wasn't a farytale
  • I hoped to have the QEQM to be more prominent
diddl · 16/11/2020 21:31

Just watched the first ep & thought that it was OK.

I think that there was a similar age difference between Charles & Diana as between Diana's parents & that her mum was about 18 when she married!

ageingdisgracefully · 16/11/2020 21:32

I remember it all well. It was an arranged marriage portrayed as a fairytale. Most people bought the fairytale, including Diana, it seems.

ageingdisgracefully · 16/11/2020 21:34

19 was not particularly young to get married either. Many of my friends got married and even had kids at that age.

DP had a mortgage at that ageShock

Jourdain11 · 16/11/2020 21:34

Did he really have to marry "a woman without a past"? It's so... Medieval!

And yeah, by the age of 33, that would necessitate a bit of an age gap Hmm

ThistleWitch · 16/11/2020 21:37

Like others I was most looking forward to seeing the C&D bits, as I grew up then.

I can't get over the crowds that formed for her though (Australia tour - Ep6) why would you do that, go and see a person like that...? (not being rude to her, I mean anyone like that, just a person)

cheezy · 16/11/2020 21:38

This MUST have been mentioned already but Andrew is played by the actor who was the strange stepson in Fleabag Shock
