Anyone else looking forward to this drama?
Starts next Tuesday.
Good cast. Makes a change from usual crime thrillers.

@PinkDaydreams

No I haven't seen those two. Honestly no idea what I've seen him in. I thought maybe Mistresses but he's not in that. He's in something called girlfriends but I haven't seen that either.
There was a series a few years ago where he was a married family man who turned out to be an under cover cop or something.

He's been in loads of things. He was in Staged over the lockdown. I love him!

MinnieJackson · 08/10/2020 01:04

@Lolaloveslemonade and @Newgirls you're right but I can't bring myself to say.anymore 😐

NellyJames · 08/10/2020 09:06

I’m on the other thread but just wondered if anyone knew where the stunning lake lodges used in episode 1 were?

PinkDaydreams · 08/10/2020 10:48

There's another Life thread?!

AlecTrevelyan006 · 08/10/2020 11:11

I don’t care about any of the characters - they all seem as bad as each other

Lolaloveslemonade · 08/10/2020 15:56

There's another Life thread?!

Yes, they’re
Watching week by week. No spoilers over there.

@Chicchicchicchiclana

I'm about to watch the last episode.

Didn't everyone else find much of the acting completely overdone? Alison Steadman is guilty as hell of over acting her socks off in everything and there is no way anyone in the same room as her character in real life wouldn't have said "why are you acting so oddly and pulling all these faces?"

Otoh, Victoria Hamilton is doing a brilliant job at playing drunk Belle. God, her niece has a miserable life - it's a wonder she hasn't gone completely off the rails.

I also think every last drop is being eked out of the Hannah-Liam-Andy triangle. Andy is the most appealing character in this whole drama to me and so why she doesn't just opt for him without all this dithering is driving me nuts. She clearly doesn't feel for Liam at all! And, again, this is spelt out in trowelfuls in case we the viewers are too dim to miss it.

I've seen a lot of recommendations for The Detectorists - going to try that next.

Yes! (I've only watched 2 episodes, so I've skimmed through the comments)

They're decent actors in this, it must be the script/direction which is making it look so over the top. Alison Steadman's face pulling is driving me mad. And the way people dispense their words of wisdom, it's so unrealistic.

As for the woman telling the widower that his dead wife had another phone (would you even notice that someone was using a different phone?!) that was just downright mean. (Maybe her meanness is explained later on)

Detectorists is bliss!

Katinski · 08/10/2020 18:31

The Detectorists theme song is composed and sung by Johnny Flynn - my new hero! Such a haunting song Star
Belle's drunken walk to her room - triggers memories!

unique1986 · 08/10/2020 18:40

I don't think its supposed to be that realistic. Remember the writer wrote Doctor Foster. Which as good as it was was quite OTT.
I enjoy the fact they all live in the same building and lives are intertwining gradually.
You could easily have a different group of people for each series.
Theres not enough relationship dark dramas imo. Maybe get one a year and this is this years from BBC.
I love getting to know the characters.
Regarding other recommendations I enjoyed Pure on channel 4 and This way up. Both should be on All 4. More comedy drama but good lead characters.
Doesnt bother me if people aren't that likeable in a drama.

And the way people dispense their words of wisdom, it's so unrealistic.

Especially the Gail character at the wedding. Who would hang around to listen to her pontificating!

And wasn't it a spot of luck that Saira was bi-sexual?

mrshadders · 09/10/2020 10:52

I'm enjoying this so far, on ep 4. Easy fluff to watch! Does anyone know where this dress is from please?!

I remember Peter Davison as Doctor Who!

Seems a long time ago now. I'm watching and agree with others that it's a bit annoying but very watchable at the same time Smile

katycantrip · 09/10/2020 23:14

@Wilbedon

Chicc, I am sorry, but I am going to prattle a little more in that vein. The actor who plays the doctor friend is Tony Archer in The Archers. His real life son plays the character's son, Tom Archer.
On the subject of the Archers, it seems only fair to point out that Dawn, the woman who Gail nearly runs over In the first episode, is played by Buffy Davis, the actress who plays Jolene
picklecustard · 10/10/2020 00:18

Just finished this. Was really drawn in by the first couple of episodes but found the ending a bit meh. I was expecting more twists and turns but they seemed to drag out a whole lot of nothing over the last half of the series.

Missushbb · 11/10/2020 21:41

@PinkDaydreams

I love Nuts In May with Alison Steadman and have just noticed it's directed by the same person as Abigails Party. I've not seen Abigails Party, I'll have to get it off eBay.
Mike Leigh? Alisons steadman was married to him.
Missushbb · 11/10/2020 21:50

I felt they kept alluding to Henry having been sued for malpractice, whilst still a doctor. But then that storyline seemed to come to nothing?! I kept think he must have misdiagnosed another character or their relative and that would be another link, but it didn't come to anything.

Newgirls · 12/10/2020 08:17

I think it was to show he had been arrogant and his friends had also been frustrated with him.

picklecustard · 12/10/2020 13:38

Yeah I thought the case whilst he was a doctor seemed to be building up to something. Also thought there was going to be more to the bloke with the dead wife, the way she died seemed quite random and sudden so I thought that was going to become relevant. Also thought there would be more to the love triangle with the baby, seemed too predictable and boring the direction it was going on!

HollowTalk · 12/10/2020 13:50

Did anyone recognise Belle as the Queen Mother in The Crown?

And Saira used to be in Coronation Street, though can't remember her in it.

Newgirls · 12/10/2020 17:59

Oh yes! Good spot

Missushbb · 12/10/2020 21:29

I didn't know Rachael Stirling is Diana Riggs daughter; she is actually very like her mum.

thereplycamefromanchorage · 12/10/2020 22:10

And the soundtrack features Rachael Stirling's partner Guy Garvey (Elbow).

For the poster who mentioned Johnny Flynn, have you seen the new Emma film released earlier this year? He plays Mr Knightley very well...

2Rebecca · 12/10/2020 22:39

I hadn't realised Alison Steadman was Bev in Abigail's Party

I thought his friend said he didn't have to resign, it was just pride.
CaptainMyCaptain · 13/10/2020 09:08

@PinkDaydreams Abigail's Party is on BBC4 on Wednesday at 9pm. It's excruciating but worth watching.
