Anyone else looking forward to this drama?
Starts next Tuesday.
Good cast. Makes a change from usual crime thrillers.

Agree detectorist woman is a great actresss and beautiful

The80sweregreat · 01/10/2020 15:42

Diana Rigg died last month :(
I had no idea that Rachael Stirling was her daughter until they mentioned it on the news when her mum died.
She is good in this and was also brilliant in 'the Dectorists' which is one of my all time favorite programmes . (I tell everyone to watch it if they can! )

thenightsky · 01/10/2020 17:33

@Tana433

The student/ waitress reminds me of Michelle Keegan for some strange reason! I think she was in No Offence on ch4 too. Love everything Alison Steadman does. She is a national treasure.
Yes, I thought she was Michelle Keegan when I first saw her too. Then I thought she looked like a cross between MK and Suranne Jones.
The80sweregreat · 01/10/2020 18:02

The waitress does look like Michelle Keegan.

OMGisthisforreal · 01/10/2020 18:30

Just throwing this in as a fun fact ... Belle is the same character as Anna in Doctor Foster, played by same actress. The storyline is she changed her name from being called Anna shortened from her full name Annabelle post divorce to Belle and made a fresh start. I read an interview with the actress playing her.

ageingdisgracefully · 01/10/2020 19:07

Finished it. Found the ending dull.

PinkDaydreams · 01/10/2020 22:09

I haven't read all of this thread as I don't want to read any spoilers! Just finished episode 3......the ending was a twist I wasn't expecting!! I'm really enjoying it. I also like how the whole series is available to view rather than having to wait and then forgetting about it or what's happened.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 02/10/2020 00:13

only on episode 2 but didn't watch the credits and thought waitress/student was Michelle Keegan!
I like it so far but there's lots of unlikeable characters which make it uncomfortable viewing. Especially the partner of the girl with the baby.

PinkDaydreams · 02/10/2020 11:13

On episode 4. Why are the dead wife's ashes in a quality street jar?! Sorry if I sound insensitive but i thought they'd be in something a bit nicer.
@OMGisthisforreal I wondered why they were both in it, I thought it was coincidence but obviously not.
I hope the couple with the baby don't get married, she's obviously having doubts and it looks like she'd prefer to be with the father of the baby.

thenightsky · 02/10/2020 12:24

Why are the dead wife's ashes in a quality street jar?! Sorry if I sound insensitive but i thought they'd be in something a bit nicer.

Its exactly the same as the jar they sent my dad's ashes back to us in - we all said 'wow, a quality street jar' too!

PinkDaydreams · 02/10/2020 12:50

@thenightsky I'm really sorry if I have offended you. But it really did look like a quality street jar.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 02/10/2020 15:26

Quite like this, Belle is funny. So obviously unhinged but flawed and vulnerable too.

I found the lingering shots of Gail's facial expression at her party irritating, why didn't someone ask her if she was OK. Nice to see an older lady naturally attractive. As opposed to Elaine Page, what on earth has she done to her face?!

Ulysses · 02/10/2020 16:34

I rather enjoyed it and thought that Belle a refreshing character. I did wonder where I had seen Saira Choudrey before and the No Offence references brought it back to me (and yes, was wondering why on earth someone so beautiful and young would change their appearance like that). That storyline was the weakest for me though it.'s a reminder that I am going to get back into The Dectorists again.

I did think that 6 months wasn't too long to wait for Gail to put out her misery.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 02/10/2020 17:56

I really loved Belle’s clothes especially the dress for the wedding. Her storyline was the best for me.

2Rebecca · 02/10/2020 19:32

I disliked the student lecturer story. It seemed very unrealistic as a story line and the girl playing the student was very unconvincing in the role she was supposed to be playing. Filled lips and pan make up and always so glib.

The80sweregreat · 03/10/2020 14:21

Belle is so classy and has an enviable figure! I did watch Dr Foster, but I don't recall her in it.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 03/10/2020 15:30

I'm about to watch the last episode.

Didn't everyone else find much of the acting completely overdone? Alison Steadman is guilty as hell of over acting her socks off in everything and there is no way anyone in the same room as her character in real life wouldn't have said "why are you acting so oddly and pulling all these faces?"

Otoh, Victoria Hamilton is doing a brilliant job at playing drunk Belle. God, her niece has a miserable life - it's a wonder she hasn't gone completely off the rails.

I also think every last drop is being eked out of the Hannah-Liam-Andy triangle. Andy is the most appealing character in this whole drama to me and so why she doesn't just opt for him without all this dithering is driving me nuts. She clearly doesn't feel for Liam at all! And, again, this is spelt out in trowelfuls in case we the viewers are too dim to miss it.

I've seen a lot of recommendations for The Detectorists - going to try that next.

The80sweregreat · 03/10/2020 15:38

Chicc, I think you will like Dectorists as it's very understated and definitely nobody overacts at all. It's just feel good and Toby Jones is just fabulous. One of My favorite shows and everyone plays their roles perfectly.

2Rebecca · 03/10/2020 15:56

Agree the detectorists is fab. Andy is nice but dim. Liam is portrayed as not as nice but he is much smarter than Andy and spots what's really going on when Hannah's busy pretending that her 1 night stand ex who she still fancies popping round all of the time is fine and dandy and doesn't see why her fiancé thinks 3 is a crowd.

Ohfrigginghellers · 03/10/2020 16:18

I enjoyed it. Loved the Belle character and Alison Steadman and Peter Davidson.

The80sweregreat · 03/10/2020 16:21

I used to like Peter Davison as Tristan Farnham in the original ' All creatures great and small '! He has aged well I think.

leastfavouritecrisps · 03/10/2020 17:19

This probably a well known fact, but Peter Davison is Georgia Moffet's dad and David Tennant's father in law.

unique1986 · 03/10/2020 17:34

I've watched all eps. And will probably watch again when on tv also.
Loved it. The last ep was kinda all wrapped up and everyone was happy but I guess that was the point. It all worked out in the end sorta.
I think it could have been 8 episodes easily for more drama in the middle.

Yes I’ve now watched it all. I did enjoy it however it was predictable.

PurplePansy05 · 03/10/2020 23:14

Just finiethe series. I really liked it. I loved Alison Steadman and her storyline.

Victoria Hamilton plays the same part in everything she's in, I can't learn to like her. Didn't like her storyline either. Great expensive wardrobe, though.
