Anyone else looking forward to this drama?
Starts next Tuesday.
Good cast. Makes a change from usual crime thrillers.

and a lesson in how manipulation works.

I think most of Alison Steadman’s work is good. The first time I saw her was when I watched Abigails Party, when I was at secondary school. We also read the book.
She was married to Mike Leigh too.
Also realised Peter Davison is David Tennant’s father in law.

ageingdisgracefully · 06/10/2020 08:33

Abigail's Party was great. Also remember Peter Davison in Very Peculiar Practice.

I like AS on the whole but always remember the overacting in Pride and P which has sullied my opinion somewhat.

Something of a national treasure....

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/10/2020 08:55

Also remember Peter Davison in Very Peculiar Practice.
I think his doctor friend was in that too.

PinkDaydreams · 06/10/2020 08:56

I love Nuts In May with Alison Steadman and have just noticed it's directed by the same person as Abigails Party. I've not seen Abigails Party, I'll have to get it off eBay.

Good point Lola - it did switch around our sympathies

I loved it. Great actors throughout. Even the smaller characters were intriguing. Belles ex has real presence, electrician and the awful mum. Even the grandma had real presence. What a cast!

Newgirls · 06/10/2020 09:25

The PIP scene, the awful mother - to show us why she feels she has to marry for her own and the baby’s security.

I loved the scene when she was getting advice from the older women - squad!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 06/10/2020 12:03

Reading this thread is like watching TV with my Mum Grin. She also cannot resist telling me what this or that actor has been in before/who they are married to/who their parents are. Even though she knows I know all that already but would quite like to just enjoy the programme in the here and now.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 06/10/2020 12:36

I actually don't think there is enough for a second series.

ageingdisgracefully · 06/10/2020 12:40

@CaptainMyCaptain: yes, you're right. I think he's related to Patrick Troughton, who was Dr Who at one point. Also in Outnumbered as the teacher.

I think Saira's lips are her own - I've seen the actress before be similarly annoying. She is so beautiful but something is just so odd about her mouth.

I didn't really understand the Gail storyline - Couldn't sympathise with her. She had literally just become aware of the husband's 'jokey' put downs. Prior to that she seemingly adored him. It was a bit of a jump to go to wanting to leave him when he'd received the diagnosis he did. I was waiting on it to be a bogus diagnosis to show how awful he was and to justify the storyline.

Overall I enjoyed it though. Loved Belle.

Lolaloveslemonade · 06/10/2020 16:11

Newgirls ‘Belles ex has real presence‘

I’m ashamed to say he would have me hooked in a second ... The b’stard!!! 😂
I can understand Belle not being able to let go.

Newgirls · 06/10/2020 17:00

I know right Lola 😬

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 06/10/2020 17:40

I hear you. He had a definite sparkle.

ageingdisgracefully · 06/10/2020 18:37

Wasn't he in I May Destroy You?

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2020 19:26

I did try ' I may destroy you' but I couldn't get into it. I might give it another go.

Wilbedon · 06/10/2020 19:33

Chicc, I am sorry, but I am going to prattle a little more in that vein. The actor who plays the doctor friend is Tony Archer in The Archers. His real life son plays the character's son, Tom Archer.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/10/2020 19:37

I didn't realise that.

PinkDaydreams · 06/10/2020 20:11

I recognise David from something but not sure what. I've googled but everything that's suggested I haven't watched!

He was the main character in Hustle (Mickey Bricks). About the con artists. He was also in Undercover which was on the BBC a few years ago, about an deep undercover cop married to a human rights lawyer.
PinkDaydreams · 06/10/2020 21:16

No I haven't seen those two. Honestly no idea what I've seen him in. I thought maybe Mistresses but he's not in that. He's in something called girlfriends but I haven't seen that either.

mrwalkensir · 06/10/2020 23:25

can I have a shout out for Joshua James as Liam? Bloomin amazing stage actor so sort of a bit underestimated on this. And I think Saira Choudhry has the sort of crazy naturally good looks that everyone else has to simulate with fillers.

Lolaloveslemonade · 07/10/2020 06:34

The character of Liam wasn’t particularly interesting. I’m not sure if it was just the script or the actor but he was the least convincing imo. My focus was definitely on his fiancée. She was great!

Newgirls · 07/10/2020 08:50

The Liam actor had a very interesting face. Yes it wasn’t exactly clear why he had got into a serious relationship and got a flat within 6 months of meeting her - unless it was sinister. We didn’t see much of his reasoning other than I guess he was going to be controlling.

VanGoghsDog · 07/10/2020 09:24

@ageingdisgracefully

Finished it. Found the ending dull.
Agreed. Very tedious actually.
