We have been following Our Girl since 2014 and although there are to be no further series, we revisit time and time again to discuss. As an alternative, we are also watching the 1990s series of Soldier Soldier.

Oh yes, I remember now but not sure if it was series 1 or maybe 2?

Hi ladies. Haven't been posting m lately as have been very absorbed in a book. Well several really bit of a series. I realise it is such a long time now since I watched Soldier Soldier I should really go back to it. However now that you are on series 5 I have remembered this was the end I liked the least so don't fancy watching again! Reading all your comments brings it back into focus and I just found that business with pregnancy tests a bit too much to swallow. It progresses on with that too long as I am sure the girl who really is pregnant might noticed a bit sooner.

Sorry you"re having streaming problems eejit as we are all so much more dependent on reliable technology at the moment.

eejittwo · 19/11/2020 21:18

I’ve got the tech working properly again and have caught up on the episodes I missed. Debs is definitely a bit of a dodgy character, isn’t she?

eejittwo · 19/11/2020 21:23

Fingers went for SF selection - I remember Bones breaking the news to him. Then, when he failed and came back (the Bangladesh broccoli) feeling embarrassed and sorry for himself, Bones gave the pep talk about apples and oranges, and being the very best orange one could be. At least, I think it was apples and oranges. Do I care enough to check? Different if it had been Elvis ...

Ilovelblue · 21/11/2020 23:42

Glad you've got your viewing possibilities sorted out eejit. Fingers crossed for Tuesday night.

Yes, you're right about the SF selection.

I did Google joining the Paras after our watchalong last week and am now inundated with recruitment adverts!

The weather here has been really grim yesterday afternoon and today so in between doing boring house jobs and painting up an old table to give it a facelift, I have to confess I've been binge watching Soldier Soldier to remind myself of the plot lines. I do agree with Magi that it's becoming less plausible now. Max Lane appears in one episode as an alcoholic corporal by the way.

I binge watched all the series at the start of last year when I bought the DVDs but don't remember being as affected by a couple of episodes in series 6 as I was yesterday. One of them in particular was seriously distasteful by today's standards. Just shows how times have changed 25 years on.

Rhu, just been reading a lengthy post of yours immediately after the end of S2, where you mused about IG getting more involved in the politics of abroad. So if TG read our ramblings, the storylines in the broccoli episodes are Your Fault. I hope you are now hanging your head in black, burning shame. 🤣🤣🤣

eejittwo · 22/11/2020 16:12

TG - dratted auto correct

Rhubarb01 · 22/11/2020 17:28

Blimey eejit don't hold back Grin !

I have no idea what I might have said then, going to blame it on old age it plays tricks on the memory. Seriously, by the time we got through Broccoli Gate, I just wished for a few Soldier, Soldier type boxing stories and tales of dodgy second hand car sales or was it videos someone was flogging in Germany back in series 3?

I know they needed to keep it exciting with lots of overseas exercises, but I wouldn't have minded a bit of domesticity too - as long as it didn't involve too much Ma and Pa Lane.

Overall - and you will definitely like this eejit - I liked the balance of series 2 with the exciting overseas stuff and the storyline extending to life back in the UK, and of course the copious amounts of Elvis.

eejittwo · 22/11/2020 21:52

You specifically mentioned Central America!
It was good fun re-reading the posts. Opinion was clearly divided in Elvis’s character and great disappointment about the secondary role of CJ, but definitely a lot of love for Spanner.

Ilovelblue · 23/11/2020 09:22

Oh dear Rhu! I think with all our ramblings after series 1 and some of the great fanfics around, we gave TG lots of material for future series. The disaster of series 3 (Belize and Bangladesh) was all his own work though I reckon!

Ilovelblue · 23/11/2020 09:24

eejit I could never understand why people didn't like Elvis as a new character. I was hooked from the moment I saw him in the prequel! Spanner grew on me gradually I think.

Agree Ilove about liking Elvis in series 2 even though skipping the wedding didn't put him I a good light. I had seen him in the Muscateers and although he wasn't my favourite in that he certainly grew on me. I think he is that sort of actor. Not an immediate hit perhaps but certainly has a certain "je ne sais quoi"

Magi84 · 24/11/2020 07:16

Well I have seen so called auto correct make some weird changes but what happened to the word Musketeers in my post is amazing. Have searched a bit to see if the word Muscat, without the letters eers added on meant something and apparently it is the capital of Oman. Ah well what can I say 😱

Ilovelblue · 24/11/2020 20:26

Haha Magi I did know Muscat is the capital of Oman, but only because in a previous existence/job, we had several customers out in the Middle East. Mind you, I always think of it as a type of grape first and foremost!

I've just done the next thread for us. Apologies, I didn't have much imagination tonight so it's just a copy of last time's wording more or less.

Here in time for "Walking on Air"

Rhubarb01 · 24/11/2020 21:01

We are at an airfield somewhere in England.

Ilovelblue · 24/11/2020 21:01

Just pressed play. I've watched a few more episodes since then so had to go back to find where we were up to in our watchalong!

A parachute jump awaits us by the looks of it.

OP posts:
Rhubarb01 · 24/11/2020 21:01

The lads are getting ready for their parachute jumps.

Ilovelblue · 24/11/2020 21:02

They all look more than a little queasy.

OP posts:
Rhubarb01 · 24/11/2020 21:02

I wouldn't do this unless there was no option and I had to save my life. This is not my idea of fun at all!

Rhubarb01 · 24/11/2020 21:03

Wonder if they really did this. It looks like they might have had a go.

Rhubarb01 · 24/11/2020 21:05

But then, there is insurance to think about, so probably not.

Meanwhile the pregnant Kate is going to a meeting for adoptive parents. Honestly, would she really have no idea.

Gosh I though that was Meera Syal again for a moment.

Ilovelblue · 24/11/2020 21:05

I have flown in a fast jet as you know Rhu and had basic parachute training before going up (as well as the ejector seat training - eeek) but am still here to tell the tale. I do agree though that a parachute jump for the hell of it would not be my preferred means of passing the time!

Mark and Kate are looking to adopt from abroad.
