Is anyone else watching tonight? Caught up with series 1 to 3 as part of my Lockdown binge and found it got better as the series progressed. Really like Tom Burke and think he has great chemistry with Holliday Grainger.

Looking forward to this series! And pleased episode 2 is on Monday!

Yes there is that. Back to Westminster for her then. Robin in the corridors of power. Very useful.

FreezerBird · 11/09/2020 14:30

Robin becomes a 'covid Marshall' undercover

Whereas Matt remains on furlough for months and works as a covid Marshall alongside furlough in real life. He'd love it.

The80sweregreat · 11/09/2020 14:38

Matt wouldn't want to be a Marshall ! Far too normal for him and not corporate enough , although he might be ok ' working from home' ! His an accountant I think ? He wouldn't be happy about Robin wearing a high vis for a living! He hates what she does as it is.

nibdedibble · 11/09/2020 14:46

I’ve not read the books but one thing the tv series shows is Matt’s aspirations to be kind of ‘not-Northern’ - he’s dying to be the southern middle class metropolitan doing all the right things and having the boring but very well-paid job and the trophy wife who’ll do a good party and hand round the canapés. She goes along with it for her home life and runs a mile from it at work.

But the power! (Mind you I've not read the books and I think those who have, have an even lower opinion of him!

tribpot · 11/09/2020 16:33

No, Matt's about money. He's like an 80s yuppie. And I expect his job can be done from home so he will have been commandeering the kitchen the table and stomping about making loud phone calls to show how much more important his job is than Robin's.

The pandemic doesn't have to happen in a novel - there are some very funny reviews of a novel that was written last year and set in 2020 along the lines of "unbelievable that the author did not incorporate the pandemic". Hellooo it is fiction.

The80sweregreat · 11/09/2020 17:19

Matt is a lowlife!
He is a ' do as I say , not as i do ' type.
He didn't support Robin when she was attacked at uni when she was only 18 and scared.
He had an affair with his old school friend Sarah Shadwell. He hates Robin's job and he detests Corm as well as jealous of him too ( oddly enough)
He has no redeeming features at all ( he is good looking , but ugly inside)
He will also play the victim and declare everything to be Robin's fault of course.
Him and Sarah deserve each other.

nibdedibble · 11/09/2020 17:26

In the tv series they do a lot with very little of Matt, don’t they? Like, we can see straight away that he’s a standard-issue emotionally manipulative arsehole. If only it was that clear in real life!

The80sweregreat · 11/09/2020 18:13

J K calling him Matthew Cunliffe speaks volumes!
The actor playing him in the dramas is doing a good job of putting across his sneering attitude and how unpleasant he is.
Only sad thing is that Robin now has his horrible surname as well! I got his number straight away in Cuckoo! As you say, if only it was that easy in real life eh?
I think Robin just overlooked most of it because she was infatuated and he was safe as she's known him since school.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 11/09/2020 18:58

Robin never changed her name! Ellacott lives on Grin

CodenameVillanelle · 11/09/2020 19:01

Robin doesn't have to keep his surname! Actually I don't think she took it. She used it as her alias when she was being becca

IntermittentParps · 11/09/2020 19:21

Do the books actually cover Robin's uni phase and her being attacked, and her relationship with Matt then, or is it all just backstory as in the series?

The80sweregreat · 11/09/2020 19:38

No , the back story of Robin is just filtered through the various books. It's quite clever how it's done.

IntermittentParps · 12/09/2020 16:57

Thanks, The80s. I might try reading them, if that's not a bit weird having watched all the TV things so far.

The80sweregreat · 13/09/2020 17:00

The books are so much better and although some of the plots are a bit complex , it's easier to follow them. The Cuckoo's calling ( book one) is my favorite.

Everysinglebloodytime · 13/09/2020 20:47

New book out in two days I believe.

I didn't see the solution coming. And I really love Strike and Robin. It was all really well done, so stylish.

Cutest awkward kiss

JUST GET TOGETHER ALREADY!!!

mum2jakie · 13/09/2020 22:17

Loved it!! That hug/almost kiss. Swoon!!

Oblomov20 · 13/09/2020 22:19

Enjoyed it. But 4 felt very rushed in the last 1/4 of the episode.

Crinkle77 · 13/09/2020 22:24

Aarrgghh I know. I just want them to get it on. It's almost like the detective story is secondary to their romance and I fancy Strike even more now after he rescued Robin.

Whispers

I think I fell asleep

Can anyone explain quickly

There was a really cute hug where Cormoran went in to kiss Robin and sort of missed.

Oh and they caught the murderer.

Do you really want to know the ending?
