Is anyone else watching tonight? Caught up with series 1 to 3 as part of my Lockdown binge and found it got better as the series progressed. Really like Tom Burke and think he has great chemistry with Holliday Grainger.

Looking forward to this series! And pleased episode 2 is on Monday!

Aaaaaaaah! Hadn't realised Amir was part of the black mail plot, but of course he was, as he was trying to protect Della from being smeared by it.

And yes - we still dont know what exactly they did that means they can be black mailed.

I really need to take notes - I forget for much from week to week!

I felt like that when I was reading the book. At the denouement I wanted to read it again from the beginning to see what clues I had missed.

The80sweregreat · 07/09/2020 20:35

Apart from Cuckoo , I've found all the plots hard to follow. Silkworm was impossible to follow : I had to read that one twice!

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 07/09/2020 21:30

In the book it is explained that Billy showed up where Amir is living looking for Gerwaint Win. Amir wants to call a doctor but is persuaded not to because Win thinks it will undermine the blackmail case against Chiswell.

Also they changed the reason why Amir left the foreign office. In the book he was sexually assaulted by CBB while he worked there and hit him. Dela heard what happened and offered Amir a job. One of Amir’s cousins found out and told the rest of their family that Amir was gay so they would disown him.

I don't understand half of the plots and crimes. I just enjoy watching the relationship develop between Strike and Robyn!

Clawdy · 07/09/2020 22:22

I'm now finding I don't particularly like either Strike or Robin as characters. Don't care if they get together or not.

Ha ha me too. I have given up trying to follow the plot (and I've read the book).
The80sweregreat · 08/09/2020 17:17

Aww, Clawdy maybe having this as a drama doesn't translate that well , but they are characters you can really get to know and care about in the books.

RaraRachael · 08/09/2020 20:42

Was The Career of Evil made into a series? I can remember the first 2 but have read the plot of this one and neither OH nor I have any recollection of it although we thought we'd watched all of the Strike programmes.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/09/2020 21:08

Yes. This is no 4

All are on iPlayer

Me too! The chemistry between them is hot.
RHTawneyonabus · 08/09/2020 23:18

Was that the last episode ? Not sure if it’s ended or not and who if anyone did any murdering.

AWafferthinmint · 08/09/2020 23:23

@RHTawneyonabus no, one more episode to go on Sunday.

AreYouSiriusLupin · 08/09/2020 23:28

I just NEED them to get together already! Has anything happened between them in the books?

Also, should I read the books?! Love JK Rowling so I should, really!

Magi84 · 09/09/2020 11:40

Yes definitely read the books. Progresses their ongoing "relationship" so much better than it can be portrayed on screen. I have read all four and in fact enjoyed Lethal White most as it really has masses of content. Glad I read the books first actually but must admit am enjoying it on TV and the two main actors are just right.

The80sweregreat · 09/09/2020 11:52

Career of Evil was on I player the other week.

HelloDulling · 09/09/2020 20:44

Just rewatched Sunday’s episode, and noticed it’s directed by Sue Tully, AKA Michelle Fowler from Eastenders!

The80sweregreat · 10/09/2020 16:07

Susan Tully also directs Eastenders sometimes as well.

RaraRachael · 10/09/2020 19:40

I've just found Career of Evil and downloaded the episodes. It's coming back to me but must not have made much of an impression as I can't remember much of it.

I've tried to read 2 of the books but find her books too long. I gave up on both of them and then FiL told me he was really enjoying one of them as it was so well written! There's no accounting for taste Grin

The80sweregreat · 11/09/2020 10:27

They are long books: with the Potter novels it was the same.
I love all the Strike ones but I must admit that some things could be condensed down a bit in lethal white such as Robin's wedding which seemed to drag on a bit!
I am looking forwards to the new book next week though.

Magi84 · 11/09/2020 11:17

Yes I am too. I have always been a bit behind with all the others so it will be great to get this one straightaway. Mind you will probably make me feel worse then knowing it will probably be 2 years till next one!

The80sweregreat · 11/09/2020 12:02

The Cuckoo's calling was set at end of 2010 so this new one out next week must be up to 2015 I think?
There are another 4 or 5 books planned I read somewhere , so she might have to include lockdown in the future! How would a private detective work then? I guess it's not a problem socially distancing if your on your own , but would still cause problems for Strike as he can't drive long distances or get about that easily if his leg is poorly ( which it often is) hence Robin being around so much to help him out. Plus we were all told to 'stay at home' and it's been nearly all year now we've had all these different rules.
Authors are going to hate lockdown!

IntermittentParps · 11/09/2020 12:27

If he and Robin were to get together then they could drive around together. Or if they didn't, they could isolate together first and then know that they were safe to share the car and office.

Investigating crimes has got to be a problem with pandemic measures in the picture though. And presumably there's not as much crime, or anyway different kinds of crime, committed when people can't get out and about?

Magi84 · 11/09/2020 13:54

Lots of interesting points there. Lockdown will certainly be a problem for authors if their settings are in specific years. Still they are all pretty good at imagining scenarios so let's hope that's how they will cope!

The80sweregreat · 11/09/2020 14:04

Murder in the supermarket over the last of the loo rolls ?
Robin becomes a 'covid Marshall' undercover and is the witnesses to a murder , so she has to go into hiding?
Someone trying to sell on a dodgy vaccine?
I guess there could be a few fictional things they could invent about the covid situation.
Still means that traveling about would be a problem. ( unless you work for the government ..)
