Great British Sewing Bee 2020 part 2

Hope I haven’t jumped the gun, but the old thread was getting quite full.

I’ve just been browsing the
www.bigcommunitysew.co.uk/
and trying to work out what sewing machines they were using at home. I always do that when a magazine has a feature about one if the contestants. Blush
I think Therese has the same Juki machine as I have and she’s also got the mini quilter too. Lucky lass.

Also, do you think that maybe either Therese or that slightly annoying bloke Peter might have won this year as they also have Juliet, the winner from the last series in this group?

Oh no I thought Therese had done enough to save herself! Really sad she has gone. I thought the third challenge counted for more than the first two but obviously not.

I also thought the quality of Therese's sewing was better than Matt's throughout.

SockYarn · 03/06/2020 22:10

I thought the people who obviously clearly remembered the 80s like Therese and Matt had a clearer vision. Claire's was the right shape but the velvet? Would have been better in all silver.

I don't like Nicole but the blue/white was spot on./

SoupDragon · 03/06/2020 22:18

I didn't like Clare's dress either - I agree about the colours not being right.

woodhill · 03/06/2020 22:20

Yes Therese was very good

2Rebecca · 03/06/2020 22:22

Nicole tries to be too clever with the difficult often not that nice fabric. Her final dress was nice though

Studycast · 03/06/2020 22:25

I thought Clare"s dress was too long (and yes the main colour was a bit odd).

TheRattleBag · 03/06/2020 22:54

Two complaints from me....

  1. Madonna's conical bra was 1990 not 1980s.
  2. No Adam Ant on the soundtrack!
fairyfingers · 03/06/2020 22:59

Loved today's. Sound track was awesome and watching it with my pre teens took me right back as I was their age in the late 80s.

I am pleased others didn't like Claire's. Something was off about it - it looked clunky. Her jacket was good though.

We love Liz in our house and I liked her last dress but her and Mark are a bit 'mid table mediocrity'.

Sad Therese went but agree right call as does dh (who pretends we force him to watch but hasn't missed an episode and has it in series link.....)

Although I didn't like her final dress, I do think Claire for the series win overall. She's consistently right near the top and seems unflappable.

What do they make them do for the final?

MorrisZapp · 03/06/2020 22:59

Clare's dress was terrible! It looked like a pantomime costume, not eighties at all.

I love Nicole, her outfit was fab and I thought the blue and white dress was stunning.

MorrisZapp · 03/06/2020 23:01

Must admit I found the high viz round pretty underwhelming. None of it looked massively eighties to me.

Cocolapew · 03/06/2020 23:32

Sorry if I've missed if this had been posted all ready, Esme in the 80's.

Clare's was deliberately or accidentally too baggy - a rate misstep from her. I was surprised Patrick and Esme raved about it. Liz and Nicole has the best dresses IMO. Not surprised Therese left she can certainly see but she can't consistently do it within the Sewing Bee time constraints and when you have recurring problems with timekeeping, don't choose a fabric that means you'll have to spend three times as long as anyone else pressing it!

I see Clare, Liz and one other in the final .

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 04/06/2020 00:33

...she can certainly sew ...

5foot5 · 04/06/2020 07:38

Trouble is at this stage of the series I don't really want any of them to go! I am glad Matt survived but sorry to see Therese leave. I think she is probably a really, really good needlewoman who makes excellent garments but can't do it against the clock.

Really can't predict now, I think they are very close. I do really like Clare though and will be disappointed if she isn't at least in the final three.

SoupDragon · 04/06/2020 08:29

Clare is consistently good but I wonder if she lacks the "flair" to win.
Nicole has the "brave choice" aspect but doesn't always pull it off.
Mark is solid but I don't think he is the winner.
Matt could do it if he manages to match his skills with his flair. Same for Liz I think too.

SoupDragon · 04/06/2020 08:30

Do you remember the year Heather won - she had been solid and dependable all through and then pulled it out of the bag in the final with a very different evening dress.

TimelyManor · 04/06/2020 08:35

Matt could be Paul Mescal from Normal People's long lost uncle.

Starksforthewin · 04/06/2020 10:02

So glad Therese has gone. She has been skating on thin ice and I find her massively irritating in her approach to managing the time.
Run close to the wind once or twice, sure, but every single task had her wittering on “ ooh I hope I finish” and then with five minutes to go “ ooh I haven’t even started ...”.

As a PP said, I think Clare is being held to a higher standard because her sewing is clearly superior. I like her organised approach and she generally makes good fabric decisions.

Matt Fucked Up spectacularly but it was pathetic he went running off.

Once the sleeves were ruined it was obvious the dress would have to be sleeveless. Given the nature of the brief it should have been right up his street as that garment was well suited to drag queens!

Nicole likes to take risks, some of them pay off. If she is in the final she could win if one of her risks succeeds.
I hope Clare wins. Triumph of a woman over the legions of beardy men they cast!

TreeTopTim · 04/06/2020 10:44

Didn't like Clare's dress. The silver didn't go and they needed to be passed out more.

Therese was probably the right choice.

SoupDragon · 04/06/2020 10:44

I don't think it was at all pathetic. He simply left the room to avoid the cameras. He didn't run off. I would have done the same!

LIZS · 04/06/2020 10:58

I wonder how well the colours come across on tv as opposed to rl. I thought that the other red dress (Liz) had the grain wrong on centre front panel of the bodice as the shimmer seemed at odds with the sides. All those synthetic fabrics made me feel hot just looking at them!

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/06/2020 11:00

This ^^ He went out for fresh air rather than have a public meltdown on camera.
Roussette · 04/06/2020 11:27

Claire's dress I thought was strange because of the contrast between the two fabrics - almost a thick velvet and then shimmery thin silver material.

JasperRising · 04/06/2020 11:29

I don't think it was pathetic either. I've had moment with crafts (in much less stressful situations than on TV) where I have wanted to throw it all down in frustration and have to step away and go for a walk. It was relatable. But I suspect they make it look more dramatic for TV purposes

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/06/2020 11:31

Another one who didn't like Clare's dress - though the velvet too heavy with the silvery material. Was really shocked when Patrick and Esme were so positive about it.

I don't think it was pathetic that Matt went outside to get some fresh air. He just needed to compose himself.
