If anyone has Prime there is a new show on there called Making the Cut with Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn (so basically an updated Project Runway). although it's more design based than sewing based.

SoupDragon · 23/04/2020 07:56

I really liked Peter's tea dress and was surprised that it was so criticized for what I thought was a really good repair of the error he made.It was barely noticeable.

Thing is, it was specifically a made to measure challenge and he messed up on the fit. I thought the correction was in your face and obvious.

I thought everything the dancer man made was awful, he made basic mistakes on every single garment

Angillia also made mistakes on every single garment. I think the deciding factor was the shirt challenge where she did very little and it was still poorly sewn. I don't expect Dancer Man will be in it much longer.

Haggisfish · 23/04/2020 08:21

The only way dancer man might survive next week is if the material is stretch material or something that plays to one of his strengths.

Haggisfish · 23/04/2020 08:21

I think angillia was the right choice to go even though she was lovely!

Roussette · 23/04/2020 08:23

Hi all! Good to find you! During lockdown me and one of the DDs are watching together, her 150 miles away and on her own, but we whatsapp during it. She has never watched SB before, but loves Joe Lycett and a couple of her friends are watching too.

So enjoyed this first episode. How Dancerman didn't go, he was very lucky, his tea dress was shapeless and hideous.

I want to look like long grey haired lady (I have grey hair), what an attractive woman with a gorgeous smile.

I thought Brighton man's shirt thing was dire, and didn't like his material for the wrap skirt either.

I loved some of the tea dresses and the best one was great.

I felt a bit sad Angilla went when she said before that if she was offered £100,000 or to stay in the show, she would choose to stay in the show. I think she knew she was going and when she said 'I'm going to keep it simple' for the shirt thing... I thought, noooooo!

Sewing Bee is a light in this lockdown for me, love it! Can't wait till a few have gone and I can remember some names, I already have some favourites.

FLOrenze · 23/04/2020 08:26

@HollowTalk I love Next in Fashion and Project Runway. Have you seen the new Amazon one, Making the Cut. It is Heidi and Tim hosting

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/04/2020 09:08

Sewing Bee is a light in this lockdown

IT IS!!!!!

WaterIsWide · 23/04/2020 09:15

Surprisingly it held my attention for the whole episode. Spurred on by the excellent Joe Lycett.

I thought the winner of the make a garment from 2 mens shirts was the worst. Frankly it was a disaster IMO. The garment maker should have been absolutely reamed for that. There was another dress that was much better. I think it was a skirt.

The contestant that left, the turquoise dress she made was fabulous. To bad she didn't finish it properly.

I just loved the female judge's necklace.

Cocolapew · 23/04/2020 09:41

I wish the BBC would put all the previous series on iplayer.

PineappleDanish · 23/04/2020 10:07

I love the Sewing Bee. I still miss Claudia as host but Joe Lycett does a good job too. It's such a friendly, happy show with everyone supporting each other and making lovely things. Also very much like the emphasis on reusing things, and sustainanble fashion - this is something which Patrick Grant is very much into.

I have been watching the Spanish version online which has a similar format but is more "fashion and design" than the sewing. They also ramp up the drama a lot by having team challenges and giving them no time at all to do something - they'd have had 90 minutes to make that wrap skirt, not 3.5 hours.

Peter is very good, very strong on the design and super creative. As far as sewing skills go, Therese is strong on that side. Right person went last night, Alex the dance student to go next as he's very out of his depth.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/04/2020 10:42

I thought the shirt challenge wasn't helped by the fact that all the colours were a bit wishy washy. I'm sure a lot of the skirts would have been see-through. Some of them I wasn't quite sure how you'd actually put on, the one that won especially! Climb in through that zip?

I also thought a few of the garments looked like they could have done with having an iron run over them. Not that I'm picky or anything. Grin

dontcallmelen · 23/04/2020 10:57

Plonks self down, was confused as seems to be two threads?
Crikey were the models necking the sherry, they were call over the place.
Seem a nice lot, loved Theresa tea dress was very pretty the pink one was an abomination, not sure who’s who at the moment I think Nicole might annoy me.

IncrediblySadToo · 23/04/2020 11:05

I have only ever seen the odd one at a friends house, but thought I'd try to get into it this year while on WhatsApp with my friend, as a way of 'spending time together'. It was ok, but will be better once there are fewer contestants! I'd like to 'watch it' with you guys too, but I couldn't keep up with this as well 🤣not yet anyway!!

I used to sew a lot of my own clothes (when
I was much slimmer) and baby/children's clothes for a shop I had. Plus a bit of house stuff. It's been years though & I don't really have the space anymore. (No dining table either). I still have my machine but it would probably die of fright if I got it out!!

I liked the faces skirt, but I
Preferred the roses.

I liked the pink//blue shirt skirt

I also had a few of the 90's tea dresses back in the day. I liked the first one Teresa's I think it was, the white one with small flowers.

Nicole, dancer boy & Jo are annoying me already 🤣

Looking forward to seeing what you all think next week.

MigginsMs · 23/04/2020 11:13

@BookSkark I spent £300 on a computerised Janome 5 years ago and I have barely used it, I’m also a bit scared of if. I’ve dragged it out again mind you now just need to switch it on and thread it!

Love sewing bee, think right person went last night.

PineappleDanish · 23/04/2020 11:35

Agree that if all you're going to be doing is the basics you don't need a super fancy machine with lots of extras. Mine is a Singer, very similar to this one.

www.johnlewis.com/singer-tradition-2250nt-sewing-machine/p231082819

And John Lewis appear to be running a promo to win a sewing class with Patrick!!

AravisTarkheena · 23/04/2020 11:41

I love Partrick’s Instagram, but I also just love Patrick and am seemingly the only person who loves a moustache, his in particular! He’s a silver fox and no mistake.

I actually prefer Joe on this to Claudia, not necessarily cos he’s a better presenter but because Patrick especially, but also Esme, are more relaxed since he’s been on. I get the impression they all get on really well and they seem to prefer working with him. I also like that he appears to properly talk to and engage with the participants who seem to warm to him. I think with Claudia there was a different vibe, she was ‘presenting’ more, although I do like her just maybe not for this programme.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/04/2020 12:04

I like Joe, too Aravis

I'm enjoying the little "half-conversations" he's supposedly having with the models until he gets interrupted to do something on the show.

They're comical. Grin

SoupDragon · 23/04/2020 12:32

When Joe took over last series, I was sure I would hate him. I loved him from the very start - he is just perfect.

I sniggered a lot over Esme and the the farting mannequin.

Appuskidu · 23/04/2020 12:50

Do any of you lovely sewing types know what sort of style the tea dress was that one if the women made last night with a block of colour (burgundy) round the back and over the sides and then a different colour floral panel at the front?

I would love a dress like that -it looks v flattering-but don’t know what to search for!

MoltenLasagne · 23/04/2020 12:56

I think it's probably a vintage pattern Appuskidu but if you go back on iPlayer and pause I think you can actually see the patterns this time. Last year they were a lot more secretive about pattern use and a page I follow kept trying to figure them out.

I'm sure if you search Sewing Bee tea dress patterns someone will be pulling them all together soon!

Appuskidu · 23/04/2020 12:58

Thank you!

It’s not necessarily that particular pattern but the style where the dark block colour at the back comes round the sides to the front. I wondered if it had a name?

FaithInfinity · 23/04/2020 13:50

I really enjoyed this! A light in lockdown indeed. I was sorry to see Angilla go, I would have preferred dancer man. He seemed sloppy and rushed things, I expect he’ll go soon.

I love Joe Lycett, I think he’s hilarious and brings a light hearted aspect to the show. I love the 40:’s style lady (?Claire).

I got a sewing machine last year, I’m a bit nervous of it and need to get it out again!

Didkdt · 23/04/2020 14:07

@Appuskidu the technique is called colour blocking, and this is an article with some links to different techniques to try
oliverands.com/community/blog/2013/07/color-blocking-101.html
I think though last night's dress was predominantly cutting the pattern pieces from different fabrics without too much extra messing around

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/04/2020 14:21

@Appuskidu I love your username. I might change mine to Okki Tokki Unga, another old favourite.

TreeTopTim · 23/04/2020 17:19

Caught up with sewing bee this morning. I loved the yellow tea dress with the bow.

I liked Angillia but I think she was the right person to go. Her shirt transformation was still the same shirt but with a different top and her tea dress wasn't finished.

I kept getting a few of the guys mixed up as they all looked similar with their fashion beards.
