I bought a Janine for about £170 that is fine for sewing.

Haggisfish · 22/04/2020 22:15

Janome not Janine!

dillite · 22/04/2020 22:15

BooShark if you do go ahead and buy a machine, don't scrimp and buy a good make like Brother or Janome.

I learnt how to sew by following vintage patters- they were made to be idiot proof as were aimed at home sewers, watching youtube videos for bits I didn't understand and just by practicing as much as possible. It was wonky at first but the more you do it, the easier it becomes. Shopping bags and cushion covers are a good start- I still use those several years on.

WickedlyPetite · 22/04/2020 22:16

I loved the winning dress, and the tropical wide sleeves 60's style dress. The woman who made that metallic skirt at the start absolutely nailed the tea dress too, it was lovely and very 'her'.

It's a real shame Angillia got sent home, I think she'd have settled into it once the first round was out of the way.

I thought everything the dancer man made was awful, he made basic mistakes on every single garment and his pink tea dress was hideous.

Deux · 22/04/2020 22:16

I loved Therese’s dress. Anyone spot what pattern it was!

Does anyone else recognise Ali, the paramedic? I’m sure I’ve seen her on TV in something else.

cravingthelook · 22/04/2020 22:19

I too loved the wide sleeved tropical one!! I want it

HollowTalk · 22/04/2020 22:20

I much prefer Next in Fashion on Netflix to the Sewing Bee. Has anyone seen it?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/04/2020 22:20

I would have kept Angilia and dumped dancer man.

Sewingbea · 22/04/2020 22:21

I really enjoyed that, some fantastic tea dresses. I too had a dress very similar to the 90s one, feeling nostalgic for my youth...

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/04/2020 22:21

Well - see you next week, my dears.

I'll try to be on time. I'm losing track of the days since lockdown started - there's nothing to differentiate them.

BlueJava · 22/04/2020 22:23

Thanks for the heads up OP!

donkeyoatey · 22/04/2020 22:23

I absolutely loved the dress that Therese had on during the show. I wonder where it's from- or do you think she made it herself?

8Track · 22/04/2020 22:27

Aww I really warmed to Angillia. Wish she had stayed.

LOVED the show being back though.

How did everyone get on with predicting what they would do from the "Basics" theme? - I spent all day wondering if they would make a made to measure challenge of jeans.

Norugratsatall · 22/04/2020 22:28

Hi everyone. I first watched this last year, got really into it but couldn't use s sewing machine for toffee so the whole process was utterly mysterious to me. I booked myself on a course after the last series finished and haven't looked back! I feel so proud to watch it this year knowing that I now know how to machine sew!

JellyfishandShells · 22/04/2020 22:28

The fabric choice of the 1940s dress was peculiar.
Pink cold shoulder dress was a disaster- he was as surprised as anyone not to be going home.
Loved the 1950s one - she is skilled and confident.
Nicole is going to annoy me .......

MoltenLasagne · 22/04/2020 22:31

Ooh found you! I can't believe the dancer guy tried to claim the unfinished sleeves were intentional. So glad he got called out on that!

BookSkark · 22/04/2020 22:32

@HollowTalk yes, I binge watched Next In Fashion. Not sure I liked it as much as old school Project Runway, but got me through a lockdown Easter weekend! And Alexa Chung is much prettier than I remembered!

Thanks everyone for the tips - will give it s couple of weeks and if the finances are holding up, I'll take the plunge - what's the worst that could happen?! If nothing else it'll presumably speed up sewing in name tapes for when DS eventually goes back to school...

Cocolapew · 22/04/2020 22:52

I'm another one who had that dress the 90's.
I think the right person went.

Icypop · 22/04/2020 23:26

Hi all waves I recognise some names from last years thread! Just been watching on catch up...Loved it!
I'm liking the banker guy, ambulance lady and the biker lady too! For some reason I have a feeling Therese will be this years jen...impeccable sewing and will do well but maybe wont take enough risks. Who knows! So excited for next week though, I absolutely love sewing bee!
For those asking about learning to sew there is a lovely lady called 'sew with hayley' on facebook who is doing some beginners videos atm (some are free and some are to pay for).

JasperRising · 23/04/2020 00:28

I do love this show but have to admit it is really confusing at the start because I am terrible at all the names and there are just too many people and outfits to jump around between (I guess that might be why you seem to have to have a notable back story or defining look to go on these shows nowadays). Looking forward to a few weeks time when there are fewer people to follow!

Thesuzle · 23/04/2020 00:35

Dancer boy will be next out,
Meanwhile, anyone else think Patrick looks a bit tired ?

Haggisfish · 23/04/2020 01:00

Yes I thought he did.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/04/2020 07:07

Patrick is interesting to follow on Instagram. As well as his clothing company Community Clothing (all made in Britain and now making stuff for NHS), he posts photographs of nature and architecture and cycling.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 23/04/2020 07:21

I loved Next in Fashion. very different show though.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/04/2020 07:31

I enjoyed Next in Fashion, too.

I've never seen Project Runway. Is it on Netflix?
