Definitly not as good as Broadchurch.

For a start, there's no Olivia Colman. In addition, there's not a single likable character. And yes, the pacing is off.

MissEliza · 25/01/2020 12:59

I think Steve is likeable. He was being an arse last night because his partner admitted sleeping with someone else.
I couldn't believe the way the ex announced her pregnancy. 'We weren't really trying' Would anyone really say that to a couple undergoing IVF?

IcedPurple · 25/01/2020 13:05

Steve is hot, but likable? He seems to have pressured someone into giving false testimony.

I couldn't believe the way the ex announced her pregnancy. 'We weren't really trying' Would anyone really say that to a couple undergoing IVF?

I said earlier that I think Jess' fertility problems are going to feature in some way - they're certainly paying a lot of attention to the fact that she's having IVF - and that I think it's odd go out for cozy drinks with their ex and their new partners. I know it's a small town and maybe not too many social options, but still.

LordOfTheWhys · 25/01/2020 13:06

I think Steve is hot ... which is almost the same as being likeable ... but not Grin

LordOfTheWhys · 25/01/2020 13:07

Oops, cross-post with Iced Grin

butterpuffed · 25/01/2020 13:09

Not convinced that Tom is the killer as everything points to him and dramas do like us to think the obvious and then add a twist. I'm wondering if Jess may not be what she seems ..

IcedPurple · 25/01/2020 13:09

I think one thing most of us here can agree on is that Steve is certainly hot!

Incidentally, I've just seen (not googling him or anything!) that the actor, Matthew McNulty, is from Manchester. Is his Scottish accent good? It sounds fine to me but not being Scottish, I wouldn't really know.

amaryl · 25/01/2020 13:10

Jess and the ex wife must have been friends before

And if Kate was so distraught finding out about Jess, how was she so friendly on the night of the ceilidh? I thought that might have been on the night of the fire, but there’s so many scenes of Kate looking distraught

LordOfTheWhys · 25/01/2020 13:10

His Scottish accent is excellent. I did wonder if DT helped him practise Grin

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2020 13:31

I am guessing one of both parents may be Scottish as his surname is.

However, I did wonder why there are so many English actors in this (and why Cush Jumbo is the only one not doing a Scottish accent!).

purpleme12 · 25/01/2020 13:39

But not everyone has an accent of the place they end up living. In fact lots don't

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 25/01/2020 13:45

I agree with Natasha. I suspect someone will go down for it but we'll just be left with that feeling of not being sure it was the right person.
Hopefully that person will be DT because even if he didn't do it, we don't want him in society.

LordOfTheWhys · 25/01/2020 14:07

I think we're going to be left with lots of unanswered questions. They said the girl and mum were in the forest 15 mins before the fire. So that means in 15 mins, they got home, went upstairs, were injected, reinforced the girls' bedroom door, fastened and locked the padlock, put the padlock keys and packaging downstairs, started a fire, went back upstairs and fell unconscious. Unless the bedroom door was already reinforced with the padlock waiting - in which case then DT would have seen it and must have been involved.

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2020 14:20

No, I know purple. Just wondered why she is different from the other English actors in it !

Squigean · 25/01/2020 14:33

None of the prison scenes are true to life. I particularly liked the suicide assessment 🤣

Me too:

"Are you feeling depressed or suicidal?"
"No"
"Here's some stuff for you in a conveniently-sized plastic bag, just on off chance you've somehow managed to foil the complex suicide test".

Actually, good point. Where did the idea of the injection being insulin come from? Think I missed it and assume post-mortem but didn't think of if his blood had been tested.

CheekyFucker · 25/01/2020 14:35

@LordOfTheWhys how do you know the door was reinforced?

It seems odd that the retraction of Dillon's statement was enough to get him released. It was Dillon's statement that gave the timeframe of 15 minutes before the fire, I guess. So clearly not reliable information.

I wonder if Dillon saw Steve or Jess in the woods? Jess has taken the dog for a walk that night.

What makes you think Jess and the ex wife knew each other before?

CheekyFucker · 25/01/2020 14:39

The police asked Tom about insulin. They asked him where she could have got it from. Carol mentioned hearing about the insulin and challenged him on the visit.

They did not say specifically that there was insulin detected. Not that I noticed anyway.

beanaseireann · 25/01/2020 14:51

I watched it last night after watching the news. Sadly, the lead news report was of the killing of three children in their home and a distraught woman found on the street outside the home in a suburb of my city, Dublin, Ireland.

Absolutely tragic Sad

CheekyFucker · 25/01/2020 14:51

In the first episode Carol asks why the beach? But last night DT said Carol had insisted on the beach. I wonder why. I wonder if he had planned the crash (provoked, plied with drink, even done something to the car?) to either kill or frame Kate?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 25/01/2020 15:04

Had Tom been injected too? Where is the used syringe evidence? Have we been definitively told that that insulin rendered them comatose and/or killed them (or was it smoke inhalation)?

I think Tom's nasty nature is being purposefully bigged up but there's been nothing so far to indicate that he's been other than a loving father, has there? So either a massive row with Kate once they got home from the ceilidh which made him decide to punish her in the worst way possible (by killing the girls too) or he didn't do it.

My money is still on Steve, although not quite sure why he would have tried to kill the whole family?

LordOfTheWhys · 25/01/2020 15:06

@CheekyFucker iirc in amongst the receipts for the padlock was a receipt for a shed door kit with a hasp and staple, etc And when Steve tried to get in, it looked as though there was an extra support across the girls' door that led to the hasp and staple.

amaryl · 25/01/2020 15:17

Why would anyone padlock their children in their room. A simple lock would suffice if they really didn’t stay in bed.
And how would you inject 3 children without them making a fuss?

I just think Jess is very friendly with Steve’s ex? Which is unusual

amaryl · 25/01/2020 15:17

Don’t think we’re getting all the answers.

SentimentalKiller · 25/01/2020 15:20

You cannot believe what knobs people can be when you arw having ivf
I negotiated time off with my manager for ivf and he told me how proud he was that his wife got pregnant on their first attempt
Confused

CheekyFucker · 25/01/2020 15:39

@LordOfTheWhys well spotted. Not an easy job then. Something the other parent would easily notice. The police have not even asked about this yet.
