We have those stairs, albeit straight. Hate them but house is rented.Sad

Mrsjayy · 27/01/2020 14:24

Yes to death trap stairs look at them accident shouting to happen !

Mrsjayy · 27/01/2020 14:26

My cousin had spiral stairs like that I think they might be against building regs nowadays .

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 27/01/2020 14:41

Phil Daniels is still hot.

I would.

Mrsjayy · 27/01/2020 14:43

He really is so would I Grin

I wonder if it is the Quadrophenia thing?

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 27/01/2020 15:13

He'll be rushing to an emergency and not heed his own advice about stockinged feet, he'll fall and die and then May will have to go because single women are not permitted to adopt. But the amazing ahead of their time nuns will successfully argue her case and May will stay after all. Then Sheila will turn to drink to cope with 3 small children and a gig going teenager and join Trixie in the alcoholics anonymous.

CoolCarrie · 27/01/2020 15:25

I feel antique now seeing Phil Daniels! I had the Quadrophenia poster on my wall and loved Sting. I loved Breaking Glass as well with Phil and Hazel O’Connor and that brilliant song Will You

FlamingoAndJohn · 27/01/2020 15:45

I think the main issue now is the strange involvement in the NHS of the nuns

That’s a good point. At the start there was a lot of nuns delivering babies. Now very little.

What year is this now? And what year was Quadrophenia set? Could they have been the same time? Could Phil Daniels have caught sight of his young self?

On that DH and I feel there should be a CTM and vintage Doctor Who crossover. Just very subtle. Like the tardis just disappearing in the corner of the screen or going down Dobbs Lane.

Kwkwjwkek · 27/01/2020 16:08

Anybody else found Dr Walters good looking or is it just me? Blush

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg · 27/01/2020 16:14

I said to my DH as soon as Phil Daniels coughed "his lungs are going to be intimidated by the dirty pigeons".

My mum also had Mrs Jayy's washbasket from a few pages back BUT hers had a fluffy pink fake fur cover over the top...fancy! That was in the 70s though.

I'm also re-watching the earlier series and agree that they were better in their grittiness. It wasn't the case that everything was tied up fine with a sugar-pink bow on top. There was more death and loss (that sounds morbid but I just mean it's a more realistic portrayal of life) and the stories had more time to breathe. I get that the advances of medical science and hygiene meant more people were surviving illnesses that would have killed them when the series started, but I thought the original episodes did a better job of balancing the positives of nursing in a close-knit community with the negatives.

Re Trixie: I think she probably would have a fair bit of cash - comparatively speaking - to spend on clothes, magazines etc considering she has nothing to spend her wages on and no family to send a portion home to. I can understand why an alcoholic might not want to move out of Nonnatus House...there might be too much temptation to succumb to a bottle, if say she was getting home to an empty flat after a difficult/tragic day's work.

I do think it's odd/mildly annoying that they don't try to re-use some of the characters and actors from earlier series. They used to make a big thing about having delivered so many of a family's children - Sr Evangelina in particular when she was still there - so it would be good to see a mother under their care again for a second or subsequent baby with a nod to or brief mention of the first storyline. The only one I ever remember seeing again was Mrs Mullucks, mother of Susan who was born with thalidomide. It wouldn't be impossible to get one or two of the dozens of actors who have played expectant mothers to reprise their part, surely.

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg · 27/01/2020 16:16

That should have read "...considering she has nothing else to spend her wages on..."

MissEliza · 27/01/2020 16:19

@TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig you made me laugh out loud with that comment.

BestIsWest · 27/01/2020 16:49

Talking of Phil Daniels and Breaking Glass, I watched The Two Popes the other night and was horrified to realise that the elderly actor playing Pope Francis was Jonathon Price who was also in Breaking Glass.

I think Quadrohenia was set in 1964 so Phil Daniels could well have met up with his younger self.
IIRC there were Mods in the last series. I seem to remember DH complaining their scooters were slightly too modern.

Clawdy · 27/01/2020 17:07

I really fancied Jonathan Pryce back in the day. Always moody and vulnerable.......

MrsSlocombesPussy · 27/01/2020 18:56

OnlytheTit, you mean he didn't have a "sense of enormous wellbeing " !

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 27/01/2020 19:11

Is it wishful thinking that dr marvellous will vanish.

Yes to the big signposting of the adoption papers!

Saucery · 27/01/2020 20:01

Ohhhhh yes, Jonathan Pryce. In The Ploughman’s Lunch and Brazil and as Mr Dark in Something Wicked This Way Comes ❤️❤️

Phil Daniels meeting himself on a scooter has just blown my mind.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/01/2020 20:34

What was the point of the Drs. They were barely there. Two non speaking who didn’t want to come to tea.

Hepzibar · 27/01/2020 21:05

Bet the nice one is going to come back and work with Doc Turner, much was made of his being over worked

FaithInfinity · 27/01/2020 21:18

I thought the whole notion of bringing doctors in for one episode was weird, I imagine it was just teeing up for the new GP role. Maybe Super doc will fall down those stairs and the two junior doctors will have to get over their differences to run the practice together?

Most people might have missed it but the table they had in the Sylethi home last week was also in Phil Daniel’s house this week. I noticed it because we had that as our family kitchen table for many years! For those worrying about being old because of Phil Daniel’s age, they definitely aged him up..I checked, he’s only 61!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 27/01/2020 21:34

Just caught up tonight, I enjoyed the episode but agree it was a bit random in places! Completely unrealistic that four young men would stay at nonnatus house 🙄 and yes there was a bit missing in the Del Boy storyline 🤔

I was humming Parklife to myself throughout 😉🤣

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 27/01/2020 21:45

I've been back today and watched the first 2 episodes from S1. How very different- Sister Evangelina was very marvellous.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/01/2020 22:31

Yes, I've been watching series 4. It's much better.

OP posts:
Squigean · 27/01/2020 23:42

I've just watched it.

I think the foreshadowing is there for a Dr 'Marvellous' Turner to take on a female GP. Shelagh will become enraged with jealousy and push Dr Turner during and argument, he'll fall over one of his books (as he's mid diagnosis for an extremely rare disease) and he'll the slip in his stockinged feet down their death trap stairs.

Dr Arrogant will come in as a locum. Accidentally almost kill Dr Turner who retires after the experience.

Then Dr Humble will replace Dr Turner. He and Val will marry. Dr Arrogant will learn his lesson good af proper and attend AA with Trixie. A romance will blossom and they'll go on to run an addiction clinic where the maternity hospital once was.

Not that I've over thought it ...

eggandonion · 27/01/2020 23:57

Is Val not 'too old' to marry a young doctor?
