I suppose you're right about Val - if she was in WW2 she must be well into her 30s if not early 40s (scarcely any younger than Trixie then)?

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 28/01/2020 06:54

I don't think the midwives age. They are like Simpsons characters, frozen in time.

I'm rewatching series 1. Chummy got married and Sister MJ was in court yesterday, really highlighted how her character has become some sort of comic side kick where they used to beautifully show the hardship and privilege of caring for a loved one with dementia. I'd forgotten the totally inappropriate things she used to do like when she said "poo to you" and stuck her tongue out at the police.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/01/2020 06:57

I don't think Val was in the war, she was just an army nurse.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/01/2020 06:58

Child in the blitz peeht?

ivykaty44 · 28/01/2020 07:33

What year is this now?

1965
Winston Churchill death was in episode 1 which took place 25 January 1965

I read the books many years ago now & found the authors stories interesting as my family were from south East London

I enjoy watching now but find it unbelievable in parts. I enjoyed heartbeat set in the 60s and think it’s all a bit nostalgic

StarspaXxX · 28/01/2020 08:08

Didn't the older gent from Heartbeat pass away recently? Sad

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 28/01/2020 08:34

Derek Fowlds (who played Oscar). Last week apparently. I hadn't seen anything. Sad

Doubleraspberry · 28/01/2020 08:37

My mother’s claim to fame was that HV when I was tiny was Derek Fowlds’ sister. He was at the height of his Basil Brush game then.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/01/2020 08:46

I briefly worked with Derek Fowlds, he was a total gentleman and a really lovely person.

PerpetualStudent · 28/01/2020 09:26

I watched a bit of series 1 yesterday (episode with the eclampsia patient) it is SO much better! Darker, funnier, sexier, more emotional. Trixie told the mousey midwife to “bloody cheer up” Shock and the dance they all went to felt much more raunchy than anything the midwives would be allowed to get up to today! Makes me really sad about how soap-y and sanitised it’s become, really takes the weight out of the social issues they attempt to deal with

woodhill · 28/01/2020 09:31

@Doubleraspberry😊

My dm had the same midwife/hv who was there at my birth, late 60s?

Doubleraspberry · 28/01/2020 09:37

70s for me!

woodhill · 28/01/2020 10:02

Harrow area?

ivykaty44 · 28/01/2020 10:07

The first 2 or 3 series are based on the book, so much more authentic.

After that they make up the stories somehow?

ivykaty44 · 28/01/2020 10:08

Actually books, as there were about 3 written

Winterfishing · 28/01/2020 11:02

I think Dr Oneface is showing some red flag signs of abuse.

How quickly did the girls apologise to him for "running in their stockinged feet" when they'd barely stood up, let alone run anywhere? They're anticipating his violent outbursts and trying to mollify him.

Also he's refusing to sign the adoption papers as a controlling behaviour.

Because Dr Turner is an abusive, mansplaining arsehole.

Who also has a sex dungeon.

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 28/01/2020 11:34

Not just a sex dungeon, a teal sex dungeon.

FredaFrogspawn · 28/01/2020 12:13

Agreed! That weird ‘girls apologising in unison for something they hadn’t done’ scene was so odd.

Doubleraspberry · 28/01/2020 12:15

Stop it!!! No more teal PVC please.

Harrow area?

Not far away from there.

FredaFrogspawn · 28/01/2020 12:20

Also why did doc have bad buffet for his evening meal?

Squigean · 28/01/2020 12:44

Is Val not 'too old' to marry a young doctor?
I'm not going to let facts get in the way of my predictions!!

icelolly99 · 28/01/2020 12:57

The teal car though! eyeroll at that. I did work out the pigeon problem straight away; remembered from a episode of House. Also thought the Delboy dad was going to get nicked before he could call the midwife/get back to his wife.....but no.

5foot5 · 28/01/2020 13:49

Also why did doc have bad buffet for his evening meal?

Yes I thought that was a shit effort on Sheelagh's part. Even in the 1960s there were ways of keeping a plate of food warm. My Mum had a pyrex thing that was heated by a tealight and I used to have my tea kept warm in that on Brownies night. The gravy congealed a bit but other than that it was OK.

Mrsjayy · 28/01/2020 14:08

Most folk just put plates in the oven to keep meals warm I can remember my relatives doing that as a kid, I wondred if shelia just did a Nonatus tea like the nuns ate with added spuds Hmm

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 28/01/2020 16:01

No that would be interesting Winterfishing Grin
