I was never a big fan of hers but this show is making me feel very sad. Jade was in her own way quite vulnerable and naive and she was treated horribly by the press. She did some stupid things on camera including stripping off (though the other contestants made no effort to tell her it wasn't the best idea and that awful Kate whatsherface looked positively gleeful) but I feel for her more now than I did then.

And to think she was so full of life and was taken so young is just heart breaking

The thing is is that Lucy Cave, the Heat Magazine Editor, was Jade’s ghost writer for her book and yet Heat were on bored with calling her a pig, horrid.

I did not know that How fucking twisted.

Not one person in this doc comes out of this looking good.

Ach, everyone was in on it and did a 'reverse ferret' as the doc pointed out and Charlie with regard to journo u-turns (changing their tunes faster than an i-pod shuffle). Graham Norton in a fatsuit was fucking vile - then meets her and has her on his show. Jonathan Ross making jokes about people wanting to shag her brains in. Grim.

Fucking really disappointed in Graham Norton

Ive heard people say the 70s was a bloody weird decade but that decade has some competition from the 2000s.

I think Danielle and Jo were just as bad with the racism. They were sniggering to encourage Jade like a couple of mean girls. Astonishing that grown women can be so vile. Not sure the witch hunt of a poorly educated woman really improved our society though.

Shit. I've just watched the Danielle and Jo exit interviews. Hateful women. Jo was completely unapologetic. I remember watching BB at the time and not believing how awful the bullying was. Davina was completely amazing though.

Big brothers treatment of Jade looking back comes over as some unpleasant psychological experiment. They seemed set out to unleash the nasty side of Jade. The bullying of Shipla by 3 adult women was awful to see yet the media bullying and witch hunt of Jade was far worse. At least Jade apologised.
With the childhood Jade had she was always going to have issues and big brother deliberately pushed Jade into revealing the anger and unpleasantness inside her.

I bet they put Shilpa in with Jade because they knew Shilpa would look down on her although I don’t believe they knew that there would be racism,

I'd forgotten that Shilpa went on to win.

She remained dignified and classy in the face of extreme provocation and bullying. Jade and the other 2 showed their true colours.

Ah but can you remember who came 2nd-4th Ed?! (I had to google)

I remember feeling sorry for her in the early days, she was clearly very vulnerable and not very bright, she should never have been put in BB in the first place if the producers had felt any duty of care towards her, but they saw her as a ratings pull.

She was racist and a bully but honestly, with her upbringing, is anyone surprised?

I mostly feel sympathy for her poor children who now have to grow up without a mother, who everyone remembers for stripping off on TV and being racist.

I can’t believe it’s taken 20 years for people to see that perhaps the TV companies should take better care of the people they exploit on reality TV.

I have just watched the first two episodes.

I think the treatment she received from Channel 4 surround Celebrity BB was awful - it was like she was a puppet, an experiment, someone they could just use for their own gain with no consideration that it was real persons wellbeing that they were messing with.

The way she behaved was awful, I’m not denying that, but the way she was treated in the aftermath just makes me feel uncomfortable.

And as for Jade’s mother - she seems pretty awful. What a very, very sad childhood Jade must have had.

TBH I think a lot of them were looking down on Jade, it wasn't just Shilpa from the word go. And of course the producers would likely have been hoping for that.

YY to Jade being treated like a social guinea pig. I thought Dermot O’Leary came across pretty badly as well.

The press abuse was shocking in retrospect. I'd forgotten how utterly brutal the tabloids were back then - the name calling and fat shaming and just horrible, horrible treatment of a young woman Sad

Yes, Jade had her faults, but she had a really rough upbringing and she was vulnerable and the trolling, the bugging of her phone, making her cry on camera for entertainment and all those horrible photos and headlines? Disgusting. The News of the World was a shameful, awful rag piece of 'journalism'.

All kinds of awful but not at all surprising given her agent John Noel's relationship with Heat. He took on Jade, Chantelle, Pete and got them all Heat stories/covers/makeovers and interviews: kerching. So it would make sense that he had contacts there.
Ignore all the previous crap Jade, they want you for x and you'll get paid y. Stories and appearances to the highest bidder.

Answering my own question, in that series Jermaine, Dirk and HfromSteps came 2nd/3rd/4th respectively - none did much of note or were that memorable, they just weren't marmite/toxic like the others.

The journalists sitting there giggling and smirking about it all these years later shows they have learned nothing.

I think Jade's dislike of Shilpa had more to do with reverse snobbery than racism. She was desperate to frame Shilpa as a snob and as soon as Shilpa reacted in the way Jade wanted, she felt justified in her hatred and let loose, it was vile. I remember watching it and feeling awful for Shilpa, who just didn't know what had hit her.

I'm glad Shilpa won. She was a class act.

She was definitely exploited. Glad BB has had it's day, although she acted badly it really set her up to fail.

This was particularly unpleasant - Davina McCall appearing to smirk and laugh under her breath while saying:

"How it can all turn in a nano-second. She's now become the most hated girl in Britain. It's a bit like knowing you are going to ruin someone's life forever [laugh under breath with big grin.] but they don't know it yet . Ooof" Smile

Hahaha. You know you are going to ruin someone's life. Why someone would smile when saying that I have no idea.

BlackberryBeret · 21/08/2019 00:01

*no idea how that smiley got there. Sorry.
