When the public and the “experts” are so far apart there’s an issue though?

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 19/05/2019 04:01

Steve do you mean Madge or are you referring to specific performances - they don't all have it do they? Confused

result for those returning to thread
winner of Eurovision 2019 Netherlands 492
2nd place Italy 465
3rd place Russia 369

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 19/05/2019 04:15

I think so Alice
Norway had douze points from 8 countries phonevote and 10 points from another seven
Netherlands douze points from 2 countries and 10 points from four
That said in the televote only there were literally only 30 points between the two so whilst Norway did win the popular vote it wasn't by a landslide. It's just unfair that including the juries demote them to 5th.

SimplySteveRedux · 19/05/2019 04:16

You can never now for sure, but a "few" performances had the "Autotune hallmarks" - little bits of fragmentation that stand out. (I did some freelance audio work a decade or so ago).

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 19/05/2019 04:19

Oooohhhh. Spill the Brew Which ones stood out for you? Smile

Alicewond · 19/05/2019 04:23

Then we call all agree the national juries are rubbish and have no taste in music :)

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 19/05/2019 04:36

Not really because Mans won with heroes because of the jury vote and that's a banger. Had it been televote only he would have lost to Il Volo (italian operatic il divo types) that year! Wink Grin

mathanxiety · 19/05/2019 04:59

Interesting, Rage - I wonder who picks the UK song? Whoever it is, they do a terrible job.

UK entries are incredibly faux from an emotional pov as well as musically mediocre, with the odd inclusion of twee and downright painful.

Gooseysgirl · 19/05/2019 06:38

I have just woken up. My head hurts. I had a nightmare dream that Madonna and her backing singers were all swinging around on those Aussie poles.

Dowser · 19/05/2019 06:49

When I heard the song and the singer , I just knew we were on to a loser.
Nothing wrong with the singer but I just felt he wasn’t Euro-ready.
I hoped between being chosen and his performance he would have had the Euro- gloss put on him.
Sadly he hadn’t.

Then there’s everything else going on with Europe.
We got a bloodied nose.

He’s a good kid but he got let down.

RedForShort · 19/05/2019 07:46

Phone died last night so sadly couldn't read or join in with your comments (just to note side along MNing helps!! I had to recruit a child of mine to help me (aged 12, politically unaware and very puzzled at how I could predict voting).

Did Iceland make it out of the studio safely?

Think the UK last was predictable enough, especially with the public voting. It does suprise me that they continue paying every year!!! Why bother?!! Obviously didn't see the jury performance but if it was similar to last night's performance he was a bit off. Seems a nice lad though (styling was hairdresser - which is good for hairdressing salon but will never be good for Eurovision). Can't help feeling he's sensitive type. not tough enough for political voting and will carry the last place badly.

I totally missed Ireland's entry in the semis (and watched it on the BBC so can't even report what the reaction was on RTE to any entry). UK really should just go that way though - just stick to the semis!!

RedToothBrush · 19/05/2019 08:04

When the public and the “experts” are so far apart there’s an issue though?

I don't know. I do think it's a good balance against too many gimmicks. Or particular styles.

Plus then you do have to think about the song. Since it is a song contest.

North Macedonia song WAS great. Not everyones cup of tea, but lyric was it was strong and the performance was clean and well executed. And I find it interesting how highly Poland scored with the jury. It really must have bombed with the public - like N Macedonia did on the night.

I wish Poland had made the final, and I think the final would have been poor for not having N Macedonia.

If you look at the top 10 can you really argue with it?

They were the songs that we collectively all said should do well (San marino excepted - and his performance wasn't as good as the semis and too early in the night so I think very fair - plus it is lyrically challenged!!)

OublietteBravo · 19/05/2019 08:08

The breakdown of scores are interesting:

Poland got 120 and still didn’t make it out of semi 1 (normally the cutoff is around 100 points).

It was incredibly close between 10th place (qualification) and 11th place (non-qualification) in both semis: 2 points in SF1, 1 point in SF2.

Finland came last in SF1 (not Montenegro)

RedToothBrush · 19/05/2019 08:10

Norway's performance on the night WAS the best of the night too. You can hear it in the reception the audience gave it (and Graham's comments). They really enjoyed it, and had so much passion and that come across.

I can't say that about Michael Rice. He was the best of a bad bunch put forward to the British public and it was obvious he was a BBC ringer for that and it was about pushing the Bbcs show with Nashers and Gerry more than Eurovision.

I almost think we need a song that isn't trying so hard and just has someone who wrote it and is passionate about it rather than 'manufacturing' an entry. It would so through.

OublietteBravo · 19/05/2019 08:12

@RedToothBrush - Poland was evenly split between jury (60) and televotes (60).

RedToothBrush · 19/05/2019 08:14

This is the Eurovision big cheese on semi 1.

Jon ola sand @ jonolasand
I can now reveal that the score difference between #10 and #11 in last night’s first Semi-Final was just 2 points. Out of the 10 qualifiers, juries and televoters agreed about 8 out of 10. Your vote matters! #Eurovision #DareToDream

Really. Interesting!

I agree with that last paragraph RTB.

There is a synthetic quality to UK entries. Can't put my finger on it. It's as if the UK is casting around for the right formula and missing each time because actually it's not really formulaic.

OublietteBravo · 19/05/2019 08:19

Czech Republic won the jury vote in SF1 Shock
Iceland won the televote.

Whisky2014 · 19/05/2019 08:21

Ours is xfactory not eurovisiony
Boring

OublietteBravo · 19/05/2019 08:24

Out of the 6 songs which were available to choose from, the UK picked my least favourite. Our song was distinctly beige. Mind you, the politics were always going to be against us this year.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 19/05/2019 08:28

Yes, X factory, and he was out of tune to start with, sadly

RedToothBrush · 19/05/2019 08:32

Mind you, the politics were always going to be against us this year.

But it was still a weak song, performed badly and without real feeling.

mathanxiety · 19/05/2019 08:34

Politics, shmolitics.

Russia generally does well.

RedToothBrush · 19/05/2019 08:35

And the PRIDE that sami bloke had singing was just infectious.

We don't believe in our entries when we do then, even with a good performance and artist. They are putting on an act. Sami bloke wasn't. He couldn't fake that. It comes through the tv at you.
