welcome citizens of the Realm!

I will open the thread for Episode 6 on Sunday.

All discussion welcome. We post different views but respect each other's contributions.

No spoilers from elsewhere on the net, please.

Though that would leave the question ‘what’s the point of Jon?’ still hanging Grin

merrymouse · 18/05/2019 11:11

I think that with so many 'main protagonist' characters it's difficult to tell an engaging story that maintains pace, ties up all the plot ends and gives each of them all the scenes that their character deserves.

I loved the scenes with Arya in episode 5, and in another TV programme she would have been the main protagonist - but because of the nature of the show we also want to understand what is driving Cersei, Tyrion, Varys, The Hound, Jaime, John etc. etc. How do you do that without meandering too far from the main narrative arc?

I found Tyrion's constant assertion that Cersei might show mercy because she loves her children annoying - but it would also be interesting to explore why he has so much faith in her. Ultimately it made sense that Jaime would return to her - as Tyrion said he always knew who she really was and loved her anyway - but Tyrion also knows who Cersei is and he attempted to help her escape.

Leontine · 18/05/2019 11:16

^ Yeah, Arya is only classed as a tier 2 character (and thus paid considerably less that the tier 1 actors, which is a pisstake IMO).

agirlhasnonameX · 18/05/2019 12:02

but Tyrion also knows who Cersei is and he attempted to help her escape.
I don't think he was trying to help Cersei, he wanted to help Jaime and understood that if Jaime went back to her and she died, so would he. That and I think Tyrion genuinely wants peace and hoped Jaime would be able to change her mind.

merrymouse · 18/05/2019 12:11

genuinely wants peace and hoped Jaime would be able to change her mind.

This is the bit that doesn't make sense rationally. However, while I accept that people are often irrational, I'd like the show to spend a little bit more time explaining why Tyrion is irrational about this.

LaurieMarlow · 18/05/2019 12:19

I think Tyrion wants to have his cake and eat it. He wants to do the right thing, but for his family not to die, even if they deserved it. He’s more loyal to his family than is prudent or that he’d ever admit.

You can see this conflict on the books, but yeah the show hasn’t laid the groundwork. Colour me surprised.

BlackCatSleeping · 18/05/2019 12:25

There's still one episode to go, so a lot can happen in 90 minutes (or however long it is), it's basically the length of an entire movie.

Only 1.5 days to go!!!!

Yes, I really am that pathetically excited about it. Grin

BurntSausage · 18/05/2019 13:08

I’m just popping back to say how excited I am 😁 I haven’t counted down like this since the glory days of The Walking Dead (series 2, 4 and 6, FYI 🤣)

At least there’s Eurovision to distract me tonight...

IHeartArya · 18/05/2019 13:28

IMO Sansa has every right to tell Tyrion about Jon. He is the rightful ruler whether Daenerys likes it or not. I’ve never been a fan of hers for some reason. I was so so right!

Leontine · 18/05/2019 13:58

@blackcat I know the feeling! I can’t wait to see it so that I can just get on with my life and stop thinking about it all the time! Grin

SpeckofStardust · 18/05/2019 14:04

I’m going to say it again, no one believes me including DH but that’s ok I’ll accept all your humble apologies on Monday*. Tyrion is going to turn out to be the villain of this whole piece. He’s been acting weirdly since that meeting he had with Cersei last season and I’m convinced he was in cahoots with her to make sure it would be a Lannister dynasty on the Iron Throne. And he would have gotten away with it too if it hadn’t been for that pesky Dany and her dragon going off-script when the ‘surrender’ bells were sounded.

*Of course, if I’m wrong, I will be namechanging and wiping the egg off my face before posting again so you’ll never know it was me.

bigKiteFlying · 18/05/2019 14:10

Tyrion is going to turn out to be the villain of this whole piece

I do wonder if he'll try and kill Dany - as he seems quite horrified by her burning kings Landing.

I don't think he was working with Cersei - Sansa possibly.

yumyumpoppycat · 18/05/2019 15:06

I gave in and searched out the spoilers - I couldn't take it any longer knowing they were out there! at least I can watch it properly on Monday evening and pay attention, rather than getting up early only for it not to work etc etc.

ElspethFlashman · 18/05/2019 15:11

Jon has to be the one to kill/exile Dany.

Otherwise what's been the point of him this season??

I still have a sneaking suspicion that Jon's destiny is the Wall though. He's just always been a NightsWatch lad. I can definitely see him being Lord Commander quicker than I can see him on the Iron Throne.

The problem is though we're running out of male candidates. And Varys pretty clearly signposted that it would be better if it was a man. That conversation wasn't for nothing.

ElspethFlashman · 18/05/2019 15:14

I actually think Tyrion would be a much more practical and proactive and energetic King than Jon. He would just knuckle down to admin and rebuilding and probably quite enjoy it.

Can't imagine Jon enjoying any of it. He'd just look glum for the rest of his life.

CaptainBrickbeard · 18/05/2019 15:15

I’m so afraid of seeing a spoiler! I honestly can’t understand why anyone would want to read a summary of the ending instead of watching it play out! I was literally on the edge of my seat for ‘The Bells’. I can’t imagine denying myself the thrill of that suspense!

BlackCatSleeping · 18/05/2019 15:21

Me, too! No spoilers for me!! I want to be wowed.

I will probably watch a lot of it from behind a cushion though.

LaurieMarlow · 18/05/2019 15:22

Well Tyrion’s already not looking good. He is her hand fgs.

Outsiders won’t necessarily believe he tried to rein her in. And if she’s very smart she’ll tell them torching KL was his idea and they may believe her because he’s the imp.

Then on the other hand, he betrayed Dany and she’s not exactly in the mood to show mercy. He might try to kill her and not succeed.

If he ends up painted a villain, despite trying to be a force for good, that would be a heartbreaking, but not unrealistic end for him.

LaurieMarlow · 18/05/2019 15:23

I so want to be strong and avoid all spoilers. Monday’s gonna be hard. Thankfully I’ve a very busy day in work Grin

ElspethFlashman · 18/05/2019 15:27

Omg Laurie an Arlington Road ending! Grin

Oh that would be fucking brutal.

SweetSummerchild · 18/05/2019 15:29

Someone on FB put up a link to this.

It’s quite an in-depth essay on the hints that there is a darker Dany emerging in the books.

SweetSummerchild · 18/05/2019 15:31

I’ve never been a fan of Tyrion, but after that last seen with Jaime I really don’t want him to die!

LaurieMarlow · 18/05/2019 15:34

Oh that would be fucking brutal.

Yeah 😢

Although book Tyrion has tried me severely of late, he was my initial favourite character. And somehow I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t get a happy ending.

LaurieMarlow · 18/05/2019 15:36

but after that last seen with Jaime

Any scene that has Lannister’s interacting with each other has been gold on this show.

Say what you like about the series, but the casting of the major Lannister’s was absolutely spot on.

agirlhasnonameX · 18/05/2019 15:53

I've always loved Tyrion for his quick witt and hilarious speeches, our love began in the first episode when he slapped Joffrey, but I really fell for him during his trial for regicide, the speech he gives about being on trial for being a dwarf, still gives me goosebumps when I watch it. He's fantastic in S2 too.

He's got really boring lately though, but I'll still be heartbroken if he dies.
