GoT is actually disgusting, isn't it?

In what way can it be described as 'entertainment'?

I seriously, don't understand why people happily sit down to watch the carnage, the immolation, the screaming children.

What is wrong with people?

OP posts:
Dilovescake21 · 14/05/2019 17:47

Totally agree Miljah. I watched a few episodes to see what all the fuss was about and couldn’t see why anyone would want to watch it! Load of old nonsense and unnecessary sex and violence. I’d rather watch paint dry.

GoodPlaceJanet · 14/05/2019 17:50

I wish they’d make an edited version, called Nice Game of Thrones or something, so I could adore Khal Drogo without being troubled by all the nasty scenes for days afterwards.

This!

I feel a tad sorry for all the unfortunate babies who have been saddled with a GOT name - where the good characters have now become the baddies.

No parent should saddle their child with a TV character name or buy into the whole hype around such programs as GOT
I suspect many mumsnet posters succumbed to the notion that the females in this program were in some way admirable role models Confused

NannyRed · 14/05/2019 17:56

Game of Thrones is a gripping and wonderfully written story. Full of drama, intrigue and deceit.

Ok, so you don’t like it. I presume you thought 50 shades of grey was entertaining ( it wasn’t, the book was appalling)

Sorry, but who died and put you in charge of what classifies as entertainment?

You don’t like it, don’t frigging watch it but don’t shuffle up at the end of season 8 saying “it’s rubbish” when it clearly has a huge following.

I guess it’s too advanced for you. Stick to old copies of Jackie magazine.

LaurieMarlow · 14/05/2019 17:58

One of the great things about the show is that they present women as being just as capable as men at both ruling and being corrupted by power.

I’m team Sansa all the way.

BertrandRussell · 14/05/2019 17:59

If it wasn’t for the excessive violence -particularly the sexual violence I would love it. Fantasy, dragons, those dog things, complicated politics, lots of pretty people......A sort of Anne McAffery/ Marion Zimmer Bradley de nos jour......

Iggly · 14/05/2019 17:59

GOT is rubbish - but I’m biased as I’ve read the first few books then stopped as they were just gratuitous in the violence etc. So I didn’t even bother with the show.

But I understand that people enjoy it and they’ve not put themselves through the hell of reading them 😂😂😂

Each to their own

derxa · 14/05/2019 18:00

when it clearly has a huge following. So does Mrs Brown's Boys

LaurieMarlow · 14/05/2019 18:01

So does Mrs Brown's Boys

Fewer Emmys though, it had to be said. Wink

Tessabelle74 · 14/05/2019 18:04

I don't understand how anyone can watch Eastenders or Coronation Street so I DON'T WATCH THEM. Simple really

DeniseRoyal · 14/05/2019 18:04

Bore off miserablists, its amazing! 😁😁😁😁😁

DeniseRoyal · 14/05/2019 18:05

@NannyRed agreed!! 😂😂😂

VampirateQueen · 14/05/2019 18:08

Ok I haven't RTFT, but you say as someone how has seen the type of injuries sustained within GOT in real life, how many burns from Dragon fire have you actually seen?

SoupDragon · 14/05/2019 18:08

If it wasn’t for the excessive violence -particularly the sexual violence I would love it.

Yes! I was gutted after I read the first book.

LaurieMarlow · 14/05/2019 18:09

Grin
NannyRed · 14/05/2019 18:19

Thank you my sweet @DeniseRoyal
It’s not often I’m in the majority (partly because I’m prone to saying what I see) but op is so wrong here, it’s verging on unbelievable. When did tv becomes compulsory?

SerenaOverjoyed · 14/05/2019 18:26

I find Miljah's 'I'm a HCP so find this terrible' really bizarre. I'm a nurse and love GOT, as do many other HCPs I work with. It sounds grandiose. There's room in the world for different tastes, including those who work to help people.

Cannyhandleit · 14/05/2019 18:26

I really want to know what sort of tv the OP actually finds entertaining!

FanfictionFan · 14/05/2019 18:27

This is really entertaining, I watch GoT because I love the politics and intrigue set in a mediaeval setting (the dragon roasting people is a bonus)

Does this make me less empathetic than the OP and her pearl clutching judginess? Of course not.

Nothing gives you the right to be so judgemental, just because you're a HCP it doesn't make you superior in any way.

Now if you'll all excuse me I'm going to fly off on my imaginary dragon and make a bid for the throne.

Icandothisallday · 14/05/2019 18:31

I dont get how this desensitizes people gore, violence and sexual violence.

Aside from the dragons, the violence, rape (used as a weapon of war and intimidation like in GOT), people being burned alive, cut open, relationships between siblings in rich or royal families etc.......all actually used to happen. Humans used to live in a similar fashion and actually do these things.

So if the human race used to do this stuff on a fairly regular basis and survived. Why would watching a fake version of it be the end of decent people and society?

In the last 10 years I dont recall any war between 2 illegitimate sons, killing thousands of people in an afternoon, because someone saw GoT.

MarvellousMonsters · 14/05/2019 18:40

Yesterday 20:37 Miljah

Valar - what disturbs me is that I walk among people who think this stuff is OK. Who apparently like many on here, MN, barely register horrific injury, screaming children, because it's entertaining.

Just- what?

You do know it’s not real, don’t you?

War is horrific, and REAL atrocities are being committed in various part of this world right now. Go and protest the genocide in Syria, instead of watching GoT.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 14/05/2019 18:42

Of course it desensitizes.
Using an example of a couple TV shows..
Quincy ME from the 70s
CSI from the 2000s

Back in the 70s the autopsy would be carried out and no gore would be shown. If they'd shown it, there would have been Complaints and the show cancelled due to it being disgusting, not suitable for TV, shocking etc etc.

CSI. Full autopsy, gore, close ups of dead bodies etc etc.

Similar show, different eras, desensitized viewers that are used to blood, gore, violence.

Now GoT comes around showing the kind of violence and actions that warrant R ratings and they sell merchandise for it.
Let's all buy a t-shirt in support portrayals of incest, rapes, violence and, in the book, pedophilia.
I wouldnt be surprised if you can buy GoT toys aimed at children. There's plenty of other R rating media that make toys for kids so why not?

BarrenFieldofFucks · 14/05/2019 18:44

It's fucking hideous. I have genuinely no idea how it gets shown or enjoyed.

SoupDragon · 14/05/2019 18:46

Absolutely. Programmes have become far more graphic in all respects. Programmes from today would absolutely not have been acceptable in the 1970s. Some things are good (like gay relationships being OK to show) but I'm not convinced it's all good.

Icandothisallday · 14/05/2019 18:46

MonkeyToesOfDoom that all fake. You mean that TV has got more gory.

These shows are all fake. Of course TV and film will push boundaries. Make something more exciting, or bigger etc.

That doesnt translate into people becoming more violent in real life or being morally corrupt.

At some point most people would have witness this sort of violence in real life. When these things actually happened to people. Life was similar to this.

And yet somehow we came through it.

If it actually happening wasnr the end of the human race and morals, how is watching it being faked ruining us?
