Madeleine documentary

New documentary due to be released on Netflix on Friday.

I've covered this subject quite extensively while I was studying law. I will be watching with a heavy heart, it is just one of those cases I can't let go of sadly.

Anyone else going to be watching?

I'm watching episode 1 now. I hadn't realised that they were dining out most nights and leaving the children asleep. Surely then, someone has been watching their movements and knew exactly when to strike?

Still so many questions. Why Madeline, and not one of the smaller children.

Doesn't bear thinking about.

AuntieStella · 16/03/2019 13:34

My teenage DC, who remember the publicity from the time she disappeared, have been very interested in the documentary. Somewhat to my surprise, because it wasn't me who mentioned it, it's being talked about in teen circles anyhow.

So now I'm watching it too, so I know how much and how far it describes paedophilia and trafficking, or indeed anything else which might spring family discussions

Aurea · 16/03/2019 13:41

May I ask is it's worth using a Netflix free trial to watch this series? Otherwise, I'll keep the code for something else.
Thanks.

Olga321 · 16/03/2019 13:44

OP - what makes you think the Portuguese police bundled the enquiry? They were hampered throughout by the McCanns involving the media, politicians, the British police, private detectives, PR and lawyers.

I don't know what happened to MM but have never believed that traffickers would target a blonde, British pre-schooler on holiday with her family when there are much easier pickings to be had Sad

GucciDay · 16/03/2019 13:45

It doesn't change anything but it is staggering to see that this wasn't a one off, it was a regular thing for them and all their friends to leave all their small dc unsupervised on an evening.

We've all had heart stopping moments when we lose site of our children but for a bunch of educated intelligent people to risk assess so appalling on a regular basis is still totally shocking

surferjet · 16/03/2019 13:45

Watching it now.
Jeez, the more you find out the more confusing it becomes.

Soubriquet · 16/03/2019 13:47

I agree that the police initially bundled it

They spent too long arriving, then spent too long setting up roadblocks and blocking up the marina.

Once it became national news, they suddenly bucked their ideas up

Also they fact is, Portugal has a paw where certain things cannot be legally said.

Yet some how these things were being reported on news

Hard to say.

It's a good thorough overview of the case. Nothing earth shattering in it, but it's well done and detailed. Not sensationalist. Not unfair to anyone, including the McCanns.

It was interesting but it won't be winning any BAFTAs or Emmys.

Maybe worth it if there are two or three series you fancy and you have time to watch them all?

LadyRochfordsSpangledGusset · 16/03/2019 13:53

Watched and this is nothing new UK media wise. I recommend looking elsewhere, on YouTube and Portuguese based documentaries that include far more evidence and genuine witnesses than the U.K. media will allow.

Desperateforspring · 16/03/2019 13:58

I'm hoping someone comments who closely followed the case

Everything we know now about peodophiles etc I feel that kids club, where she spent nearly every day...was the clue. Someone there built up relationship with her, on site , would know movements and was motivated too take her. Could easily slip sleeping meds too her and watch parents and get her.

JustDanceAddict · 16/03/2019 14:07

My DD was watching it this morn as she was too young at the time to know much about it.

LadyRochfordsSpangledGusset · 16/03/2019 14:07

As a qualified anaesthetist it's unlikely Kate McCann would not notice her lively 3 year old had been drugged by a third party.

Desperateforspring · 16/03/2019 14:15

Perhaps lady.
BUT would it be unusual for small child to be tired after a day out and about being busy?
Would anyone think twice about it?

Soubriquet · 16/03/2019 14:21

It’s a good theory

Why would anyone suspect for a second that a kids club would drug children?

The parents would assume, like most people, that they were simply exhausted from a busy day

ColeHawlins · 16/03/2019 14:27

Isn't that quite a complex way to go about stealing a child? With more risk than necessary?

She was a difficult child to steal anyway. It's hard to believe anybody would try that.

pineapplebryanbrown · 16/03/2019 14:28

Tbh this is part of the reason CCTV makes me feel safer, living in London i know i would have to think fairly hard to avoid CCTV for any length of time. We were on holiday recently and my youngest DC commented on the lack of cameras

WheelyCote · 16/03/2019 14:31

Just finished watching this...lost for words. Heartbreaking

Desperateforspring · 16/03/2019 14:38

Maybe she wasn't drugged. Quarter sleeping tablet? Who knows. .. but the one place she was establishing friendship and relations was in the kid's club. If they're fed there also that's another range of people who would have seen her everyday.

Without parents. The parents felt Very relaxed on site why would they ever suspect.

Someone has noticed her, had the connection....

Desperateforspring · 16/03/2019 14:40

Sad the couple in Morroco didn't know she was missing and then couldn't alert anyone

Perhaps worldwide body should be set up. One number all information goes in... one system...

I'm watching it now. The arrogance of the journos saying ''it doesn't add up''.

Their insinuations don't add up. I think two doctors could administer calpol successfully..

If they're taking the blood dog and the sniffer dogs picking up on some scent from the driving seat of the rental car as evidence of something, will it not be flung out of court straight away as they only got the car 25 days after she went missing and there was no way they would have raised all of that publicity if they'd had a body to dispose of. RIDICULOUS.

H0wt0kn0w · 16/03/2019 14:50

so what is that theory, that somebody took her easily because she had been given a sedative? or that the overdoes killed her and then they hid her body under the spotlight of media gaze?

Desperateforspring · 16/03/2019 14:51

Of course we are all speculation but I think abduction is most likely.

I think it was someone from the holiday complex areas.
It could have been someone more random who saw her everyday but as we know it's usually someone close to the DC, peodophiles work with children so they can get close to them.

Ozzybobgoblin · 16/03/2019 14:52

I thought I knew where I stood on this whole thing. I've just finished episode 5 and now I don't know. All I know is the whole thing is a huge mess.
