I loved this episode. Hard choices, high emotions and a very, very cute kitten.
Claire is obviously very concerned about her penicillin making exploits. Poor Graeme Menzies (I was a bit annoyed with the wrong pronunciation). His death clearly haunts her. But, I think, it follows the whole "fate" thing that runs through Outlander. His death led to Claire and Jamie being reunited and fulfilling their destiny.
I thought her pompous voiceover was interesting this week. If God is the spider in the middle of his time web, then there is no escape from fate because it's all predestined, anyway, and the more we struggle to avoid it, the tighter it holds us. I think this will rear its head again when the Scottish protestants arrive because they firmly believed in double predestination ( God choosing some people for heaven and some for he'll before they are even born, with no way to change that "destiny").
Jamie killing Knox was inevitable as soon as he found out about the Ardsmuir roll. His first loyalty is to his family and tenants and all that would be in danger if Knox goes to Tryon. Jamie is, after all, a soldier and a laird. It was telling that he asked forgiveness for not giving Knox a soldier's death not for killing him in the first place. Jamie is clearly on a war footing.
Roger needs to stop being a prat and they both need to communicate better.
The whole episode was topped off by the very cute Adso. What a lovely wee cheetie cat. And he gave Jamie something positive to focus his emotions on. Killing Knox but saving the kitty might give him a modicum of redemption in his mind. It was a clever juxtaposition.
Oh my, I'm being as pompous as Claire now
but I really liked this one. There was a lot to think about.
