Am just enjoying episode 2 of s5.

The wedding was a nice start. Does Roger know that the baby could be Bonnets? 🤔

Lessstressedhemum · 02/03/2020 10:01

Yes, he does, driving. That's one of the reAsons that he had to think about whether to come back to Brianna.
I really enjoyed ep3. What a beautiful baby. And it was very romantic, Jamie riding through the night and then thanking God when he saw Claire.❤️

I enjoyed it too. I think the whole Beardsley episode functions to contrast with J & C's relationship, highlights the isolation of those living in the back country, the dv issue, race and contrast with 20th century medical care. I can't remember what happens to the baby, though.

JADS · 02/03/2020 12:35

Watched ep3 and enjoyed it. The Bardsley SL made very little sense to me in the books. I thought this would be tedious but it wasn't so bad. Love an episode of Jamie and Claire together. Claire getting medical is something I enjoy even though I eye rolled hard at her plan to save Mr Beardsley.

Very cute baby though and Jamie looking good in a tricorn hat Grin

JADS · 02/03/2020 12:38

Jamie being upset that his dad had suffered the same fate was really moving. I am currently re watching S1 though and saw that episode over weekend so I wondered if that is why I liked that so much

drivingtofrance · 02/03/2020 13:39

Ah thanks lessstressedmum I couldn't remember how that was explained in the previous season.

So why was Aunt Jocasta making a fuss about who will inherit her property? She was up to something!

shartsi · 02/03/2020 17:22

Aunt Jocasta was being a sly McKenzie. She wanted Roger to claim Jemmy which is exactly what happened. In the books, Arch Bug steals the Jacobite gold off her (Jamie finds it later and he keeps it). However by then Jocasta has moved to Canada.

drivingtofrance · 02/03/2020 19:26

That makes sense - thanks shartsi

Bonnet is a nasty nasty man. I hope he doesn't get to Frasers Ridge..

Packingsoapandwater · 03/03/2020 00:38

Oh my goodness, episode three! It's a bit hardcore.

You never got this kind of thing on Dr Quinn, medicine woman. Grin

Crikey...

Lessstressedhemum · 03/03/2020 10:24

I always think that Claire's plans to treat people are a bit ridiculous, really. Even if she were able to clean up Aaron Beardsley, get the maggots out his wounds, chop of his foot, miraculously heal his other foot, transport him to Brownsville and find someone to nurse him, what on earth good does she think it would do him? She is totally unrealistic.
Poor Jamie, suddenly realising that his dad could have lingered for ages. That was very emotional.
You can see he's desperate to keep the baby and bring it up with Claire. He feels deeply about missing out on bringing up his own kidsSad

I know, rehabilitation after a stroke is hard enough with modern methods let alone in the 1700s! Jamie thinking of his dad is very poignant.

shartsi · 03/03/2020 14:53

503 is my favourite episode so far. I loved the birds at the end. The producer says they are passenger pigeons, now extinct. There used to be millions in north America. The graphics were good.
I liked seeing Jamie helping Claire with her doctoring and his understanding that she could never kill a patient.

Lessstressedhemum · 03/03/2020 16:23

There is a bit in one of the books where millions of passenger pigeons fly over the Indian village and they shoot down loads of them to eat. It's no wonder they are extinct now.

Hi lassies and fellow Outlander fans! I agree re: Jamie - what have they done to him? Shock He seems really stiff - all the vitality seems to have gone out of himSad. I want to see him moving running and reacting - I dont beleive for a second that Sam has suddenly lost his acting skills but Jamie has become a bit distant and weighed down somehow. I want to see him being playful and passionate. I remain resolutely hopeful though Blush

DryWhiteagainW · 04/03/2020 22:41

The opening scene when Jamie returns home made me chuckle. I mean I loved it and it was cute, but if DH crept up on me while I was sleeping I wouldn’t be all breathy “Jamie”, I’d be “what the f*ck! Don’t bloody creep up and shock me!!!!“

Mytholmroyd · 05/03/2020 10:51

Yes that is probably more what I would do! Apparently he is dancing next week so my wish for playfulness and movement may be answered. Its too lithe a body to keep it hidden albeit the swishing duster coat and kilts are verra fineBlush

drivingtofrance · 05/03/2020 11:39

Yes - the thousands of birds taking to the skies was excellent.

The old man probably deserved it all - but to have no hope of recovery? Even if they'd amputated his gangrenous leg he woudn't have been able to farm or anything.

If I were Bree and Roger I'd want to skip right forward to the 1960s/70s for sure.

drivingtofrance · 05/03/2020 11:40

Agree that Jamie doesn't seem quite himself.

Perhaps he is reflecting all the new responsibilities which he now has- and does not want to have to act upon.

shartsi · 05/03/2020 14:28

The scene where they were bantering around the fire reminded me of season 1 McKenzie rent group. The good old days.

Florabella · 06/03/2020 07:14

Season 1 really was the good old days. Those characters seemed to much more real - Dougal, Colum, Rupert and Angus.

JADS · 06/03/2020 07:56

Interesting that everyone is saying Jamie isn't himself. I am re watching S2 where J&C are in France. Jamie behaves like an absolute dick - he abandons Claire to spend all hours hanging out with BPC, he strops around like a petulant child and he duels with BJR. Admittedly Claire also does some pretty stupid things too.

Jamie is still recovering from the rape and psychological torment that BJR puts him through so his behaviour is understandable. Murtagh is there for him throughout.

I can totally see why Jamie is so conflicted. I don't think being Laird sits well with him. He just wants to be a farm, raise horses and play with his grandchildren. He must be mid 40s by now so I get he's not going to be a cheerful S1 version of himself. He did have some awfully cheesy lines back then.

JADS · 06/03/2020 07:59

I agree the S1 characters seemed more real. Even Stephen Bonnet doesn't feel as creepily scary as BJR. Tobias Menzies really rocked that part

mateysmum · 06/03/2020 14:03

In book 5, there is a lot more interaction between Jamie and his tenants and we really see him become the laird he was always meant to be. There is a real growth and maturity about his character and his relationship with Claire.
This isn't coming across quite so well on TV as it's a much steadier, less action packed sort of mood. Of course we are coming into more of the pre revolutionary events so things may pick up.Perhaps Sam is struggling to bring the same depth to older Jamie as he did to the young rebel warrior, fighting for his woman against BJR.

quirkychick · 09/03/2020 12:58

I really enjoyed this episode too. I think there's a definite atmosphere and "feel" to this season, now. I liked Roger more this episode, even though Jamie wasn't pleased with what he'd done, it seemed like he was trying hard to take control in a no win situation. I liked seeing Matilda from Ripper Street in a cameo too (she's also in the Witcher) and the complex situation of Claire being thankful for them taking in the baby and Jamie trying to keep things calm with the militia. I liked the Marsali-Brianna moment too.

TheNavigator · 10/03/2020 16:01

Brianna is the real pill for me. I don't know if it is a poorly written part or the actress isn't very good, but it just seems to go flat when she is in it. By contrast, Marsali lights up the screen.

I feel a bit sorry for poor old Roger, he is doing his best and then Jamie comes along and takes control - it is not like Jamie is exactly the king of good ideas, most of his plans go wrong. I do still enjoy Jamie and Claire though, the chemistry there still works.
