A new adventure awaits us in the New World. It's going to be savage!

Tbh, I've stopped worrying too much about straying from the books. Some stuff niggles a bit and if something really huge changed it might upset me, but I've decided to just go with it. Book to film always changes things and I think they have done a great job.
Unlike some HH folk, I can't bring myself to care that they adapted the gathering or that the pearls seem to be a double strand now🙄
I think I'm going to have to watch it again, just to confirm that Jamie really was wearing a kiltGrin

It's my birthday today, so while I wait for DDIL to pick me up for lunch, I may well just watch again too. 😄 Nothing if course to do with the kilt.

Next birthday us a big one, and DDIL and I are doing the Outlander tour. DH and DS breathed a sigh if relief when we said they could stay behind with DGD and the dogs.

mateysmum · 18/02/2020 11:28

Was Jamie wearing a kilt? Shock? Definitely better watch it again, just so I can check every detail! I liked how he wore the kilt over his existing coat, and didn't try to recreate his look from 20 (fictional) years before. It showed how Jamie has grown as a man , yet referenced the book 1 scenes.

I am usually a real stickler for sticking to the books, but the early parts of book 5 are much less action packed than the earlier books. Although in the book, the Gathering sets up a lot of plot lines, this can be done differently on screen and I guess not all of them will be covered. It would be pretty poor TV to cover all the journey and setting up at the gathering etc. I thought they might have covered the issues over it being a protestant wedding a bit more as this is important to both Jamie and Roger.

They have now brought it back to the book in terms of Duncan Innes proposing to Jocasta as it looked at one point as if they would let Murtagh fill this role.

blibblibs · 18/02/2020 13:48

The kilt was fabulous but I did have to laugh at tge extended knee shots!
I've also given up worrying about staying in line with the books, if it continues past this season there's not a chance they can keep everything in. Although having said that I've just finished A Breath of Snow and Ashes (book 6) and apart from the bit with Claire at the beginning, which looks to be in this season, and the Malva storyline, not much else happens considering it's 1500 pages!

bugbhaer · 18/02/2020 17:52

I hope Roger gets an easier time of it than he did in the books.

ToyKitchenSink · 18/02/2020 20:48

I doubt it @bugbhaer. He's going to have a torrid time, I reckon.

Snozzlemaid · 18/02/2020 23:10

Happy Birthday Shosha1 it's my birthday today as well.
I've not seen the new episode yet as we're away for a few days so got to wait until we're home again. Can't wait.

Myfanwyprice · 19/02/2020 17:57

I finally had a spare hour and watched it today, I loved it, had a good balance of joy and foreboding.

I have only read the first book, so no comparisons between them, but I really like the way the relationships between the various couples are developing.

quirkychick · 24/02/2020 20:35

Anyone watched today's episode? It's setting up a fair bit of drama and conflict and really shows how conflicted Jamie is in his role. I'm trying to remember if the incident at the end is in the books, it's a while since I've read them.

I like the way they've brought together Marsali, the Malva role and Claire performing an illegal autopsy (wasn't it originally on one of Jocasta's slaves?). It seems quite a neat way to put in those plots, it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

I like Jamie's coat.

Lessstressedhemum · 24/02/2020 21:53

Hopefully the marsali/malva thing will get rid of the horrible malva storyline.
I really liked this week's episode. They are drawing everything together really well and pruning a lot of the guff. And they are doing a good job of showing how difficult it is for Jamie just now.
I still can't be doing with Roger. He really annoys me.
The eye thing is recounted in the books as a warning to Jamie not to try to confront Bonnet. It's meant to show how ruthless bonnet is.

Myfanwyprice · 25/02/2020 09:09

Bonnet is such a good villain isn’t he, felt anxious watching that episode, so much conflict.

Florabella · 25/02/2020 10:22

I preferred this week's episode to last week (less schmaltz), but I think I fallen out of love with Outlander a bit. And I may be unpopular for saying this, but Sam Heughan seems to have become a bit one dimensional in his role - Jamie just has one expression the whole time

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 25/02/2020 10:55

Jamie just has one expression the whole time The One Where Jamie Knots his Eyebrows Together?
The One Where Jamie's Squinting Because He's Lost His Glasses?

JADS · 25/02/2020 12:02

I have never been a Roger fan, but I think he has had a tough time since time hopping. I'm not keen on the "totally hopeless academic" thing they have going on. Surely most 60s men have some sort of practical skills? Is that something in the books? Of course he wants to go back to his time.

JADS · 25/02/2020 12:04

Jamie can carry on with his one expression provided he keeps the wig and the kilt. Sorry to be shallow.

(I think Sam Heughen is struggling with acting older and relying on stereotypical moves)

Myfanwyprice · 25/02/2020 13:31

I hate to agree, but I do a bit - I adore series 1 Jamie (don’t ask how many times I’ve watched the start of episode 10 Blush but I do think that whereas Claire is believable as being older and Bree’s mum, Jamie is less convincing.

But, this is only a little bit, I’m still in love with outlander and can’t wait for the next installment.

Packingsoapandwater · 25/02/2020 16:12

I can't be doing with Roger. He's always pissed off about something; I feel sorry for Briana married to such a maungy bloke.

I've got to the point with Outlander where I just want them to go a bit Cranford for a while. I want to watch Claire and Marsali dissecting a body, and Jamie to have to solve practical problems that come up about Fraser's Ridge, like securing a water supply and growing vegetables.

But we are right back with Stephen Bonnet again, and I just wish he'd get lost for a while.

I also thought the conversation Claire had with Briana about affecting the future was a bit of a missed opportunity. There's never really been enough consideration of that side of things, which I think is a shame, as it creates some very interesting ethical questions.

quirkychick · 25/02/2020 17:09

I always think that Roger seems a bit wet for someone who worked his way on Bonnet's ship across the Atlantic. I mean, it was hardly a pleasure cruise, was it? I would think a long sea voyage in the 1700s would toughen anybody up. Especially, on Bonnet's ship of all people, and then being sold as a slave, you would have thought it would make him more of a survivor, really.

I quite like the way Jamie is conflicted, I think it shows the spirit of the books. He's playing a game where he needs to stay on the side of the British for his settlers and then switch at the right moment before he's on the losing side.

endofthelinefinally · 25/02/2020 19:00

I find Roger a bit tedious. I haven't read the books, so I am hoping he might redeem himself.
I agree that Jamie is a bit one dimensional atm, but lets see how things develop.
Murtagh is a bit scary. I thought he was supposed to be hiding?

shartsi · 25/02/2020 20:30

I watched and I like the build up. It looks like episode 3 will be about the old man Beardsley , I didn't really see the significance of his story in the books, I hope they make it good for TV. His sons had a more interesting plot.
In the books Roger eventually carves up a role for himself, but shit really happens to him. He should never have gone through the stones.

breadwidow · 25/02/2020 20:54

Hello, I posted on the other thread but I see the action is here.

So far, for me, this is an improvement on season 4 which got bored with. However I completely agree about SH's acting. He was soooo good in season 1 (and not just for obvious reasons) and he seems to have lost it. Like his acting skills have diminished.

I also think I'd like the pace to slow, so we can see the characters just be for a bit.

DryWhiteagainW · 25/02/2020 22:48

I feel bad slagging the lovely SH off, but, I agree about his expressions:

Sexy: eyes half closed, look down when kissing Clare
Smouldering: whilst posing face on, then slight turn of head (demonstrated Ep 1 whilst modelling incredible kilt get up)
Thoughtful: knitted brow.
Old: squinty, to emphasis need for specs.

But, you’ve just got to love him.

I felt nervous that he’d get caught giving the 2 Scottish prisoners they eye/code.
I felt anxious about Bonnet who is gorgeous to look at, but a very evil man indeed, excellent villain.
Very nervous about idiot Clare dissecting a corpse whose family believed was buried....even her daughter knows this is a vet bad idea.

I hope we see more of Fergus.
I love Marsali.

Lessstressedhemum · 25/02/2020 22:59

Marsali is awesome. A real role model in how to be a strong woman.

OP posts:
quirkychick · 26/02/2020 06:15

Maybe Roger should take some lessons from Marsali!
