A new adventure awaits us in the New World. It's going to be savage!

Half the makeup budget for season 1 must have gone on creating Jamie's flogging scars for every shirtless scene.
Since he is keeping his shirt on a lot more this season, couldn't they spend the "scars" budget on better wigs?

mateysmum · 08/01/2019 10:04

I like the Jamie and Brianna scenes this episode, but I think what I'm missing from the season as a whole is Jamie fulfilling his destiny as laird to the tenants on Fraser's Ridge. In S4 we really see the Fraser's in isolation and they've cut all the book stuff about the arrival of tenants and how they interact with the Frasers. Somebody correct me if that's more book 5 than 4.
After all the trials and tribulations mature Jamie really does develop as a man in the book but we've seen much less of him as so much time has had to be taken up with the whole Brianna and Roger stuff. It's a shame.

Lessstressedhemum · 08/01/2019 11:05

Most of the tenant stuff is in book 5, I think, matey. Certainly with the Christies, MacGillivrays and such like. Your right, though, he really does grow into himself in books 4 and 5. It's a rea; shame that we haven't seen more of it. It's also a real shame that we haven't seen more of his fine physique or his kilt Sad

I've always thought that Jamie gets far to hard a time from Claire and Brianna for the Roger stuff. After all, he is only being what he actually is - a C18th highland father coming face to face with the man he thinks raped his daughter. What did they expect. It rips me that they try to put their "modern" mores onto Jamie when it suits them. You would think that they would be aware of the likely outcome of telling him that Brianna had been raped, especially Claire. And as for Claire not telling him that it was Bonnet - words ever fail me. I also always think that Lizzie gets off scot free in comparison.

I really liked this episode, but I wish Sam would grow his hair back. That'll be one of the consequences of his success, I suppose.

Thanks LessStressed. The books kind of merge when you haven't read them in a while.
I agree about the whole Roger/Stephen confusion, but if all the characters acted logically there wouldn't be much of a plot would there!
Yes please can we have less Jamie's fringe and more of Jamie's bod kilt. He looks so much better when he has his tricorn hat on and the fringe is blessedly hidden.

dischargepaperwork · 08/01/2019 12:29

Sam's hair in the first few episodes before it got longer was lush.
I think claire's wig would work so much better if she had the hint of if a parting. It looks like a helmet. Doesn't anyone review these things, it's insane.

Looking forward to more lord John Grey. Yum. I'm so shallow.

dischargepaperwork · 08/01/2019 12:34

Agree Jamie's character gets such a beating from the women. Claire in particular has incredible double standards. She went off with a baby and a husband and safety and a career for 20yrs and left Jamie to loosing another child, culloden and famine and destruction of his nation and then popped back and was thoroughly outraged he found it tricky to mention his failed marriage. I know it wasn't her actual choice but on the whole I think she did OK from the deal.
I guess she's quite a pioneer, exacting and demanding in a time when stepford wives were more the thing. Poor guy though.

Especially given his frizzy fringe. Guy needs a break.

Lessstressedhemum · 08/01/2019 19:18

I agree about Sam's hair. It was lovely. Now it looks like it needs a good deep conditioning treatment. I know how curly hair looks when you don't condition it and Jamie definitely doesn't let any conditioner or curl tamer near his.

Claire and Brianna burn my biscuits with their double standards. I like Marsali and Rachel Hunter. Except the way that Marsali pits up with Fergus's guff.

So how come Clare had a hissy fit about slaves at River Run, but it quite happy to send Brianna there when it suits her? And how come Brianna, who had a black flatmate, is quite content to go? Hypocritical, much? Totes against slaves, except when it could be useful for me and my family, then lets make use of them for our own convenience. How does DG square this about face in the books?

Abra1de · 08/01/2019 22:06

If I were roger I’d nip through the stones. See a doctor. Have a nice hot bath. Buy a gun and different clothes and lots of high energy food and drink. Plus any other trading essentials. And then return and sort out any Mohawk trouble with the gun.

crumpet · 08/01/2019 22:27

Well, for Claire it was a choice between leaving Brianna alone at Frasers Ridge or down at River Run with all the midwives money could buy - wouldn’t be a difficult choice for me to make!

The highlight for me was Claire’s face during Ian’s noble moment- I rarely laugh out loud but did here. Also enjoyed her reaction to toilet memories!

I don’t think they’ve made a good job of showing how dangerous and painful it is going through the stones.
You can’t just nip backwards and forwards at whim (although that would make everything a lot simpler!)

Claire doesn’t want to be a slave owner and be an active part of slavery but she accepts that they are a part of this time of history however distasteful she finds them. She is also out of options at this point and can’t afford to be anything other than pragmatic.

I've not read the books and in the TV series it does seem like anyone can basically nip through them.

But what about Brianna? She didn't appear to have any misgivings about going to River Run, despite having a black flatmate. I do think it should have at least been raised as an issue for her, it just seems like a major plot hole to me.

silverstarsandhearts · 09/01/2019 11:07

Would love to join in - I have been watching for a while and was a bit meh about this season and season 3. However, have really enjoyed the last 2 episodes. Really really miss the highlands and young Clare and Jamie though Sad

I think too the actor who plays Roger has been made to look v unattractive in this and cannot sense any chemistry whatsoever between him and Brianna.

I have family in Scotland and went to vist Lallybroch a couple of years ago. Was so excitedGrin

WardrobeInCrisis · 09/01/2019 12:37

Can I join you too? Just caught up with the 4th series. Recovering from a virus has some advantages 😁

JennyfromtheBroch · 09/01/2019 18:57

Welcome all!

I don't think the novels even address the slaves issue from Brianna's POV (may be wrong). It's definitely a bit of a Hmm

Totes against slaves, except when it could be useful for me and my family, then lets make use of them for our own convenience. How does DG square this about face in the books?

There's a line about Claire feeling guilty about a slave running her a bath but the bath being really nice so....

crumpet · 10/01/2019 05:38

I was reading some of DOA earlier, and there was a passage about Brianna taking her chamberpot outside to rinse out so that the slaves didn’t have to to it, so it is touched on. I think early on there might have been some references to Claire making her bed/doing other chores which surprised the slaves, but it’s been a while since I read the book properly.

WardrobeInCrisis · 10/01/2019 09:43

I've not read any of the books. I just fell into watching the series - late. And have just caught up.

Start with book 1 I suppose?

Whisky2014 · 10/01/2019 09:49

I just wanted to hit Brianna and tell her to shut up in the last episode. They thought he raped you, you daft bint. And then she's dictating everything as if its just a wee journey. It's a 4 month trek and Jamie is trying to set up a community. Ffs Brianna. You didn't even like Roger!

I laughed at the "you told me you hit a tree" line.

Lessstressedhemum · 10/01/2019 16:25

There are a few passages in the books that have Claire and Brianna doing things for themselves that the slaves would normally do, so it is mentioned that they are uncomfortable with it, but I suppose that you have to try to fit in with the mores of the day so as not to draw too much attention to yourself.

But yes, Brianna is a hypocrite and very slappable.

Sorry if it's been mentioned but does anyone else think Murtagh is going to end up marrying Jocasta and take some of the Duncan character's storyline?

Lessstressedhemum · 11/01/2019 19:55

DG says that Murtagh won't be taking Duncan's role. It might be that he takes Herman Husband's place with the regulatorsq or at least has some sort of story arc there.

Just watched deep hearts core.

How intensely annoying and really, if I were the boys, I'd be mightily pissed off with the whole shebang.

Is Brianna wearing a wig now too? She acted well, absolutely nailed irritating entitled upity self absorbed 20 something.

Jamie was much better in this episode, more himself and it was nice to see a hint of the highlander again. Claire could do with remembering who he actually is.

Are the books this annoying?

I've been driving loads and loads recently and really enjoying book one on audio in the car. This though... Bah.

Huge soft spot for Murtagh though.

Bring back the kilts!

dischargepaperwork · 11/01/2019 21:31

Might go watch some season one for a flash of Dougal and Jamie playing shinty and looking fabulous Grin
