A new adventure awaits us in the New World. It's going to be savage!

Good but why cut short the steamy stuff? I guess it wasn't required to move the plot on but come on!

qate · 11/12/2018 05:21

I found this a bit slow compared to the excitement of last week's episode - Murtagh, B&R etc - probably because I wasn't so keen on the LJG/Willie story. Murtagh really does brighten up any scene he's in though. Really hoping for some stones/Lallybroch action next week!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 11/12/2018 08:58

I've never understood why Clur is cold to LJG.
Yes, he is in love with Jamie but it has never been reciprocated romantically, Jamie has only ever seen LJG as a good friend.
LJG also treated Jamie well as a prisoner, contrary to how most were treated

Holidayshopping · 11/12/2018 09:01

I agree, Breakfast -plus if it weren’t for LJG, Jamie would probably be dead several times over!

Claire can be really po-faced sometimes!!

mateysmum · 11/12/2018 09:16

I think Claire feels very protective of Jamie after Jack Randall raped him. She knows how it almost destroyed him and wants to protect Jamie from any other homosexual advances which she fears may trigger Jamie's nightmares again. She doesn't really understand LJG and Jamie's relationship. LJG doesn't know about BJR and is sincerely in love with Jamie - which is another reason Claire is a bit off with him. But this episode showed how their relationship changes as they are honest with each other and Claire starts to appreciate that LJG really is a good friend and not a rival for Jamie's affections.

AngeloMysterioso · 11/12/2018 09:47

I was bored stiff during most of that episode, I was quite impatient for it to get to Brianna, and it didn't!

PollyFlinderz · 11/12/2018 09:49

Its all beginning to drag on and lose its appeal for me.

mateysmum · 11/12/2018 10:44

Don't know if you've read the books Angelo but yes the plots do get (even more) convoluted from here. This episode is again setting things up for future events where LJG and Willie's story become more entangled with Jamie/Claire and Brianna's lives.
I think it's fair to say that the first series is a fast moving action and romance story. From book 4 on it is more for the aficionados.

For those asking about LJG and Jamie, I recommend reading "The Scottish Prisoner" one of Diana Gabaldon's LJG spin off novels. It helps to explain what happens to LJG and Jamie during his time at Helwater. I got it for I think 99p on a kindle sale.

I’ve been considering reading the books. I don’t want to give up on the story but I’m not enjoying this series.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 11/12/2018 10:55

That was all a bit meh for me. When they started off with the snake in the privvy I was hoping for the scene in the book with Willie and Young Ian covered in shit. But no.

Florabella · 11/12/2018 14:49

I liked the slower pace of the episode, but hope that it's not at the expense of important parts later in the season (I have a feeling that Roger's story may be glossed over quite a lot).

Willie was really quite a brat (as he was meant to be), so I like the addition of the Cherokee scene, to show a brave side to him, and that he has inherited something of Jamie. I also liked the change that he remembered Mac (I always thought in unlikely that he wouldn't recognise him after spending so much time together.

I wish Ian had been there to meet Willie as that set their relationship for future seasons.

JennyfromtheBroch · 11/12/2018 17:11

Why on earth would Claire welcome LJG with open arms?! He's declared that he's in love with her husband and Jamie is indebted to him. She'd be quite entitled to be a bit po-faced (plus, the first person narration skews things imo). She did nurse him and I do think she comes to appreciate him, but I think she gets an unfairly hard time for not rolling out the red carpet.

crumpet · 11/12/2018 18:15

The later books can be very frustrating - some of the writing/ scene description is so memorable, and yet swathes of them disappear off into random (and lengthy) side lines - William in the great dismal is a prime example. Can’t even remember which book it is in but I’m sure I never managed to get through that section without skipping chunks. But other passages, and there are plenty of them, are so evocative and interesting to read. Diana Gabaldon swings like a pendulum.

JennyfromtheBroch · 11/12/2018 18:46

Jamie and the poor Mormon woman with the twins is another example of a monumental waste of ink and paper- see also the constant bloody separations of Jamie and Claire (Donner, the murder subplot etc, Hal's asthma, the endless tarring and feather in the last book).

GrungeSponge · 11/12/2018 23:46

I was a bit bored this episode tbh.

I'm also confused at the weather. Would you really be camping out with snow on the ground? In just a lean-to type thing?

Where is this season filmed, does anyone know?

JamieFraser · 12/12/2018 06:06

Filmed across central Scotland. They filmed most of the outdoors near me in Perthshire. It was freezing and I remember that it snowed several times as well. I think they filmed November -ish as Ds was off nursery with a cold and we walked down to the chemist and saw all the filming crew and trucks

FairfaxAikman · 12/12/2018 07:41

I think most of the Frazer's Ridge sequence was filmed on an estate near Crieff and the Rodger/Brianna in the lodge at the Clan Gathering was in Bridge of Earn.
I remember it was absolutely freezing at the time because the crew were camped out at Perth and I asked one of them for a lighter for my charcoal handwarmer as a pretence to find out where they were filming Grin

Lessstressedhemum · 12/12/2018 10:08

I know a lot of people were disappointed with this episode and think it was too slow/domestic etc, but I thought it was lovely. The whole point of DoA is that J&C have finally found a home and are able to put down roots and, maybe, have a bit of peace for a change. There is also a lot of scene setting for future relationship developments and the like.

I thought that they handled all the tensions really well, particularly between Claire and John. I'm not a big Lord John fan, he doesn't really grab my imagination, but, without him, there would likely be no Jamie because he would have snuffed it long ago. I thought the Murtagh bit was good because he feels like I imagine a lot of Scots, particularly Highlanders, felt towards the British at the time and he isn't afraid to voice his anger. Poor Murtagh has lost so much and wants some sort of revenge, really.

Willie was a spoilt wee ratbag, just like he should have been. He's another one that I can't warm to. Obsessed by his station, whiny and wallows in self pity as he gets older (although he is only a young man even in the later books.) I really liked that he recognised Mac, it always baffled my how he couldn't in the books given how close they were. It was very touching and seeing him ride home in front of Jamie was heart wrenching.

I actually think that this is my favourite episode so far.

Oh, and I can recommend the Scottish Prisoner, if you want more background to John and Jamie's relationship. It's the best LJG book by a long way, I think, although they all round out his character quite nicely.

Would the Scottish Prisoner be ok to read as a stand-alone?

I’ve only read the first book, and a bit of the second, but watched every episode, so would know who’s who etc.

As someone who doesn’t know the books, I am loving this season, loved the tenderness between Claire and Jamie in the last episode, left me with a lovely warm feeling.

Lessstressedhemum · 12/12/2018 11:31

Yes, I think it would if you already know who the main players are.

I like that they finally have a chance to relax with each other and just share quiet, tender moments without ll the drama that usually plagues them.

Myfanwyprice · 12/12/2018 12:46

Ah lovely, I’ll download that to read - thank you.

pisspawpatrol · 12/12/2018 20:13

The Scottish Prisoner is by far the best LJG book I think. I read that one and another one, but couldn't get on with the other one.

JessieMcJessie · 13/12/2018 07:17

Does anyone know where they filmed the view across Fraser’s Ridge that they keep going up to admire? It looks to “Big” to be Scotland (as it should) but maybe it’s CGI enhanced?

Holidayshopping · 13/12/2018 07:56

I want to read the Scottish prisoner but just can’t bring myself to go ‘back’ to a time when Jamie was in prison and thinks he won’t ever see Claire again!

mateysmum · 13/12/2018 12:55

Holiday He's not at Ardsmuir in the Scottish Prisoner. It's part at Helwater and part elsewhere.Yes Jamie is missing Claire but it's not all doom and gloom.
