old one

The background music when Rose appeared was from those scenes when Rose and the Doctor were separated - each of them holding their hands flat against the opposite sides of the same wall. I think.

Enjoyed the episode, not the most gripping story ever but just fun to have the Doctor back. And CT was MUCH better than I'd feared.

Russell T does love his schmaltz, though. That scene with them waving from the Tardis - barftastic. SOMEONE should tell him when to stop.

edam · 05/04/2008 21:08

Cribbin's lines were originally Donna's Dad's but the actor had died - after the read-through - and they didn't want to cast someone else as the Dad. So they created the Grandad character instead.

SueBaroo · 05/04/2008 21:10

It was Rose's theme. There's a Martha's theme, too. And they throw in the Torchwood theme when Cap'n Jack appears.

geekery on every level conceivable, really.

DaisySteiner · 05/04/2008 21:15

Oh, I see. Thanks.

hippipotami · 05/04/2008 21:21

See, I don't pick up on the music, such as Rose's theme etc. I am one of those viewers who just watches a programme, thinks 'that's nice' (or not) and forgets.

Maybe I should start to pay closer attention, that is the problem with watching tv and having one eye on MN on the lappie at the same time. I thought women were meant to multitask well!

SueBaroo · 05/04/2008 21:28

I gave up pretending to have a real life a long time ago. Now I'm just a cypher for ridiculous levels of lust, squeeing and theorizing about fantasy programs plot-lines.

ChocolateRockingHorse · 05/04/2008 21:30

How the hell old is this Donna character supposed to be? How old is Catherine Tate? Cos I swear she looks at least my age (36) and that's a wee bit old to have such a sprightly Grandad isn't it?! Her mum was a but young too.. as was Donna to be living at home!

I swear they're trying to make her Lauren-aged

ChocolateRockingHorse · 05/04/2008 21:31

What is this "squeeee" of which you speak?

hippipotami · 05/04/2008 21:37

I like it Sue, I like it, I may become more like you

Not in a weird stalker way you understand, but lustful fantasies whilst doing the ironing, mmmmm there is something in that

Nymphadora · 05/04/2008 21:38

The story was changed to make Grandad different to Dad though as Dad was similar to Mam originally.

SueBaroo · 05/04/2008 21:46

squee is the sound you make when you are about as excited as a 5 year old gets about something really, really exciting.

I'm going to see Hamlet in Stratford later in the year, and I've been made to sign a contract in which I vow I will not squee loudly when DT makes his entrance.

SueBaroo · 05/04/2008 21:46

Well, no I haven't actually.

SueBaroo · 05/04/2008 21:47

Donna's gone back home though, after her life fell apart in the Christmas special.

hippipotami · 05/04/2008 21:51

I felt for Donna, mid thirties (as I see her), life fell apart at the Xmas special, so back home with mum and grandad, and wishing she had taken the chance of a lifetime to travel with the doctor when she had the chance.

I really liked CT as Donna. I was not sure I would as I normally cannot stand her, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I found hte miming bit very very funny.

Dd (only aged 5) loved the littel 'white teeth animals'

sphil · 05/04/2008 21:51

DS1 was so funny when Rose turned round. " Rose! No WAY! No WAY!" . Lovely to watch it with him - he does all the jumping around that I am, of course, far too dignified to do . Despite the fact that he'd been working himself into a right lather all day about whether to watch the episode or not - the clip of the woman with the Adiposians bursting out of her made him go quite peculiar (he's a bit of an emetophobe). We're letting him decide for himself this year (we used to record and vet) - seems to have been the right decision as he went to bed with no problems.

hippipotami · 05/04/2008 21:52

ah drats, little

RustyBear · 05/04/2008 21:55

Catherine Tate will be 40 on May & Bernard Cribbins will be 80 in December, so he could be her grandad.
Can't find a dob for Jacqueline King (Donna's Mum)

PortAndLemon · 05/04/2008 22:00

ChocolateRockingHorse - the idea is that having lost her fiance and job at Christmas 2006 Donna's been forced to move back in with her parents, initially just while she got back on her feet but then as she stopped looking for a job and started obsessing about the Doctor it's stretched out to over a year.

Bernard Cribbens is 80 so not a bad age to be the grandfather of a mid-30s character.

serenity · 05/04/2008 22:02

Oh god that was good, and makes me feel a lot better after the that horrific heartwrenching twisted evil finale yesterday.

However, I'm going to have to watch it again as MIL made us go and sing Happy Birthday to BIL in the middle of it. I mean, what a stupid time to have a birthday - right when DW restarts

Chamomile · 05/04/2008 22:08

I enjoyed the episode but poor DS 2 was sadly let down. It seemed he was expecting all the action from the season 4 trailer in tonight's episode- Oods, Sontarons the lot!

Solitaire · 05/04/2008 22:13

I loved DSs reactions to Rose. DS2 thinks thaat cos Rose saw into the heart of the TARDIS, (finale season 1) she is now a sort of TARDIS herself. Not bad logic for an 8 year old. Whaddayathink

CrackerOfNuts · 05/04/2008 22:19

We had that problem here Chamomile. As soon as it finnished Ds burst into tears and said 'but it didn't have xyz in it, off the advert'.

They all were very glad to see Rose back though. Dd2 got so excited she jumped up and sent orange juice flying everywhere.

southeastastra · 05/04/2008 22:20

what on earth was it about, fat creatures flying off to their planet?! lol silly

southeastastra · 05/04/2008 22:21

really like catherine tate as his pal though, works very well

Chamomile · 05/04/2008 22:24

I wish we hadn't known about Rose coming back for that would have been a great scene if it was a total surprise.
