Anyone going to be watching the new Doctor Who now it is a woman?
Love Jodie as an actress. Never been fussed on the doctor before!!

I actually foud this episode far more scary than any of the others, and could sense the peril all around. Even more frightening is that the peril wasn't from an alien, but other human beings.

PawneeParksDept · 21/10/2018 21:16

I said I hadn't watched the episode fully of course it changes things if a black womans story has been written by a black woman as opposed to a white guy, and I loved her books growing up.

TheFirstOHN · 21/10/2018 21:19

This week a black woman was subjected to a racist rant by a white man sitting near her on an aeroplane. The flight attendant asked her to move from her seat, then checked the racist was OK.

My children were already familiar with Rosa Parks' story but were struck by the dilemma of the 'Scooby Gang' having to be complicit in her oppression in order for her to make her stand.

They enjoyed the Banksy joke and were impressed that this episode was co-written by Malorie Blackman, as they've read some of her books.

KnockMeDown · 21/10/2018 21:20

Does anyone else find Jodie's sonic screwdriver scanning a bit too overblown and earnest? A bit too over-acted, in fact?

PawneeParksDept · 21/10/2018 21:21

God forbid that a person is honest and comes back to a thread and acknowledges they may have been hasty though, eh?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/10/2018 21:25

I thought it was pretty good. I really like Jodie.

Where can I get a coat like hers? Like a long hoodie. I love it!

ApolloandDaphne · 21/10/2018 21:26

I've just finished watching it. I loved it. I really enjoy that the storylines are much simpler and easy to understand. You don't need big bad aliens. You just need a great writer.

GhoulishGremlins · 21/10/2018 21:27

This episode was a bit uncomfortable to watch but it was brilliant.

TheFirstOHN · 21/10/2018 21:28

I found the Andra Day song quite moving - it reminded me of a Maya Angelou poem.

Vinette Robinson was good in this, but she played a character in Waterloo Road that irritated the heck out of me.

Bradley Walsh was better in this episode.

SerendipityFelix · 21/10/2018 21:33

Yes the choice of Andra Day - Rise Up was absolutely perfect. That was pushed me over the edge to proper tears, I think, it heightened the emotion superbly.

CountFosco · 21/10/2018 21:38

Well my DDs loved it again (as did I). One already knew about Rosa Parkes, the other didn't. She does now. Classic Doctor Who and a real threat from the humans in the episode. Agree we haven't seen the last of the bad guy.

Had a quick google and several episodes this series are written by women. Doctor Who had NO episodes written by women between 2009 and 2015.

TheFirstOHN · 21/10/2018 21:42

I'm not looking forward to next week's episode.

StripySocksAndDocs · 21/10/2018 21:44

Well indeed PawneeParksDept, you could have just not bothered, but you didn't.

I get it though. Who it was written by is important, and would make a difference.

GhoulishGremlins · 21/10/2018 21:46

Did the guy actually know she's the Doctor?

DappledThings · 21/10/2018 21:54

I hated the song. I've only ever known this show to have original, instrumental music and suddenly having a real, sung song that sounded totally of a different period was really jarring for me.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/10/2018 21:59

I honestly thought I'd hate all of the changes, but they feel very empowering for our youngsters. The song was really good too.

PrincessWire · 21/10/2018 21:59

I agree we've not seen the last of Krasko (not sure I've got that right!) as sending him back in time just seemed far too easy and all wrapped up for DW.

LassWiADelicateAir · 21/10/2018 22:56

I thought it was pretty good apart from the dreadful closing music. I thought it jarred horribly. It would have been much better to close with music which was contemporary to the period.

WhirlwindHugs · 21/10/2018 23:14

I thought it was brilliant (I loved the final song choice)

Having complained about Ryan and Graham not being very good together last week I thought their scenes all worked really well this week.

Agree, script very cleverly done to ensure that Rosa's actions were all her own/own intentions. I really hope they will get Malorie blackman to write for them again. Always a bit gutted when someone amazing only writes the one!

UrsulaPandress · 22/10/2018 00:15

The baddy was sent forward in time.

KnockMeDown · 22/10/2018 06:32

I'm sure Ryan said he was sending him far back?

FermatsTheorem · 22/10/2018 07:47

Yes Ryan said he was sending him back, and Ryan undoubtedly genuinely believed he'd sent him back, but Ryan is not exactly an expert in alien tech so anything could have happened Grin.

thecatsthecats · 22/10/2018 09:08

Problem is, Krasko is dangerous wherever he is, surely? I expect having sent him back is going to create other issues...

nuttynutjob · 22/10/2018 09:19

Notice how all the baddies keep getting teleported?

I think this will be a build up.

haverhill · 22/10/2018 09:22

I like it. I think Jodie’s a breath of fresh air and an excellent role model. DS 11 loves it, too.
