Anyone going to be watching the new Doctor Who now it is a woman?
Love Jodie as an actress. Never been fussed on the doctor before!!

Was also in tears at the end as Rosa refused to move and they witnessed it. The music was spot on. That was powerful tv.

UrsulaPandress · 21/10/2018 20:05

No Pawn. The other chap was trying to prevent it happening and they made it sure it happened as History recorded.

SerendipityFelix · 21/10/2018 20:06

Pawnee, no, a racist bad guy was trying to interfere with time, the Who crew foiled him, but ended up having to stay on the bus to make sure it was full enough.

PawneeParksDept · 21/10/2018 20:07

Yes, but that's what I mean Rosa Parks was only able to make her historic stand thanks to a Magic White Woman ensuring that the scene was set for her.

I appreciate others don't agree but that's why I thought it was tone deaf

SerendipityFelix · 21/10/2018 20:10

Magic white woman stopped magic white man from stopping Rosa Parks needing to make her stand at that precise place & time.

helzapoppin2 · 21/10/2018 20:10

Pawnee, yes that did occur to me!

SoupDragon · 21/10/2018 20:12

I thought the episode was a bit too much like a history lesson. I enjoyed it and it meant I had to explain to DD that the segregation and basic story was true but it just seemed a bit forced.

NancyDonahue · 21/10/2018 20:13

I did enjoy tonight's episode but I'm missing my 'hide behind the sofa' Doctor Who. Looks like there's a wee bit of peril coming up next week!

sunshineNdaisies · 21/10/2018 20:15

I didn't like it at all. I thought it was insulting and not respectful. Tell the true story, not the "rosa parks was only able to do it thanks to the new crappy doctor" episode we got tonight

PawneeParksDept · 21/10/2018 20:16

I'm glad others agree !

I wonder if there'll be a backlash when it goes out in America

UrsulaPandress · 21/10/2018 20:22

There have been many episodes over the years where the doctor has helped to keep history on course.

Don't remember it causing an issue.

Cheguevarahamster · 21/10/2018 20:25

Now, I don't see it as the magic white woman doing it for Rosa. The whole point of the episode, was that the doctor was making sure that history ran it's true course. The whole point is that Rosa stood up for her rights herself, she owned her protest. There was no inspirations from the Dr or companions - it was her own story. Her timeline was altered by the time criminal. The Dr just ensured that the timeline was correct. I thought it was extremely powerful. Best episode so far.

thecatsthecats · 21/10/2018 20:28

I disagree. The Doctor didn't stand up to racists herself - in the street, in the cafe or on the bus. She didn't give an inspiring speech that convinced Rosa she needed to act. The main interactions with Rosa were all by Ryan, but HE didn't tell her what to do either.

All her actions were her own. The story respected that, they just ensured that the story that they knew happened occurred to spite the interference of an outside element. In fact, they realised that the ONLY way they could support Rosa was to be the white faces sitting in the seats necessitating the demand for her to move, putting themselves on the wrong side of history.

I think it's very simplistic to see it as 'white woman saves the day's. She didn't. She stopped a white man ruining a event that had already happened, and ultimately had to act contrary to her own nature to ensure Rosa could play her part.

And I loved the Banksy jokes.

thecatsthecats · 21/10/2018 20:29

Cheguevarahamster

Glad you see it my way!

SerendipityFelix · 21/10/2018 20:30

Well, I disagree with that interpretation. Rosa Parks does what Rosa Parks did. Bad guy tried to change history so the circumstance didn’t happen. The Who crew stopped him. Rosa still does Rosa.

It’s not like Rosa wouldn’t have made her stand and the Doctor came along and got her to do it.

Anyway, I found it very very moving.

Dobbythesockelf · 21/10/2018 20:31

I liked tonight's episode. I didn't think it was white woman changes history. It was very much they made sure that history ran it's correct course, which has been done numerous times in Dr who. I also liked the Banksy Joke .

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 21/10/2018 20:34

But - two white people decided to walk because the bad guy put up that poster. Surely they would have taken seats that DW and Graham were in

SerendipityFelix · 21/10/2018 20:35

Yes the Banksy.... “or am I?” had me proper laugh out loud. And then be that annoying person laughing nudging DP and saying “it’s funny, innit!” whilst he raises one eyebrow at me Hmm

StripySocksAndDocs · 21/10/2018 20:42

The doctor didn’t make it happen, it was a prevention of alteration of history. As said in no way was Rosa Parks caused to do what she did because of the four extra people.

Only slip up is where she said she would walk, her refusal to stand up was planned (was to be her or another woman, but was Rosa as the other woman was pregnant). Though I don’t know enough detail to know if the plan was that day, or just ar a time Rosa was told to stand.

Thought it was a fabulous episode.

WhyDontYouListen · 21/10/2018 20:51

I thought it was a great episode, very well done to cover the story of Rosa Parkes while still getting enough 'Doctor Who and time travelling' in to make it entertaining. I also welled up at the end.

PawneeParksDept · 21/10/2018 20:53

I've just read on another thread that it was written by the awesome Malorie Blackman which changes everything!

I will go back and watch the full episode properly and see how I feel

KnockMeDown · 21/10/2018 20:57

I thought it was a fantastic episode also, and the ending really powerful.

But am I the only one thinking that Ryan sending the baddie back in time just a little too easy? Just how far back has he gone, and how much damage can he do there, with his little changes? I don't think we have heard the last of him!

SerendipityFelix · 21/10/2018 20:58

Ok now I’m Hmming. Now you’ve realised that it was (co-)written by a black woman suddenly you’re not offended by the exact same story?

PenguinRoar · 21/10/2018 21:04

The first time Doctor Who has been written, directories and scored by a team of black artists and people think it’s pat and inappropriate... 😩
