They need to write her in with a bit more authority not open mouthed and gazing at the screwdriver every 5

As for all that "Ooh,I frightened of the darleks" nonsense.
The companions are too much.Wish they'd killed these 3off in the first episode and kept the grandmother instead.Even her and Bradley would have been good with some room for humour which is also sadly lacking.
You have to wonder if Chibnal has ever watched Dr Who.

I could watch Michelle Gomez reading the phone book while she was watching paint dry. She's been memorable in everything I've seen her in.

I don't think it was public pressure

There was always a lot of "why can't we have a female doctor" whenever there was a regeneration. Along with wanting a non-white Doctor.

Oh that's a relief boney it's my first sensible thought on this! I like the less complicated storylines tbh because I got quite confused by the ice thing and old baby doctors etc but this is too far the other way. I'd live it to have worked well.

but as Sharon D. Clarke can out-act all the rest of them I suspect she can command more pay per episode than the 3 of them put together - maybe they couldn't afford it?

but I suspect the real reason they didn't do this was rampant cultural misogyny - a female doctor with a female companion, neither young enough to be salivated over by young men, simply wouldn't get the ratings, even if brilliantly scripted and acted.
