Starts on Sunday on ITV1.

I thought that was the route they'd go down with the costume thing, but they said they'd spoken to another girl who worked there who confirmed she was in the Madonna costume.

Doesn't feel like that's a big part of the plot, merely just the way of establishing that the last time she's been "seen" wasn't actually the last time at all

5000FingersofDrT · 31/07/2018 10:14

Dh is obstinately sticking to his 'twins swapping places' theory no matter how much I argue that the plate in the girl's arm makes it vanishingly unlikely. I'm never going to hear the last of it if he turns out to be right. Especially on the back of his fabled Midsomer Murders triumph in correctly predicting, within the first two minutes, that John Shrapnel dunnit Grin

WinterHoliday · 31/07/2018 10:41

The thing about the twin swapping theory is surely there would still be a mystery about who killed the other twin and why so I'm not really sure how that would be relevant, unless I'm missing something! I'm hoping it's just an interesting detail that they're twins. Maybe the writer is a twin or has twins himself which is why he included them.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 31/07/2018 10:47

He could be right though 5000FingersofDrT. I seem to recall that the surviving twin was almost leading her mother when she asked her about the broken arm and holiday incident.

Hoppinggreen · 31/07/2018 11:10

There’s definitely something fishy about the surviving twin

GravyMilkshake · 31/07/2018 14:11

I reckon it’s Mel who is lying about the men going out again. So I reckon it was her wot dunnit.

hackmum · 31/07/2018 14:30

One puzzling thing is why Pete told the truth about having seen Hayley but then lied about not having gone out on New Year's Eve. So he's obviously hiding something. His reaction to the DNA test suggests that he has committed another crime, so perhaps he actually committed that different crime on New Year's Eve?

I agree Pete is planning to blackmail the others.

If you include identical twins in a story, there's usually a reason for it, but I haven't worked out what that reason is yet.

Bit of a mystery about Elliott - surely too young to have killed Hayley, but perhaps, as others have said, he witnessed the murder/accident.

QueenOfTheAndals · 31/07/2018 14:52

There’s definitely something fishy about the surviving twin

Is there?

buttybuttybutthole · 31/07/2018 15:17

Did Pete lie about going back out or is Mel lying 🤥

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 31/07/2018 17:15

Maybe some of the men were having relationships with wives other than their own???

colouringinagain · 31/07/2018 23:27

Just caught up. The theme tune writers were definitely inspired by The Bridge - listen next time...

hackmum · 01/08/2018 08:29

It's Pete who lied. It wouldn't make any sense for Mel to be lying - the killing definitely involves some or all of the men (I suspect just James and Tim, with the other two knowing more and not letting on). Have just realised that Pete is lying because if he told the truth now he wouldn't be able to blackmail the others later on.

tamsinconditions · 01/08/2018 10:54

Protecting someone like a child (eg El) seems likely because the friendship between the four, whilst longstanding, is not profound enough to risk career and family for - and most likely would have resulted in one of them going to the authorities if they knew of a murder.

The 'enormous favour' pathetic Pete asked for and the appearance of £3k at the end of the last episode may have been designed to mislead us and those dots should not necessarily be connected Grin

youngestisapsycho · 01/08/2018 11:48

I think there must be a reason that they are identical twins... they could have just been sisters... it will have something do with the whole case.

Hoppinggreen · 01/08/2018 11:50

Do we know “El” is Elliott?

AveABanana · 01/08/2018 12:06

I'm thinking they (the 4 men) knocked her off her bike in the rain, the doc tried to fix her, when she made a noise someone strangled her. Perhaps she saw Elliott burgle the village hall. Given there's no DNA on the bones, why are they taking samples? How come the retired Laird policeman is so involved?

Violetroselily · 01/08/2018 12:38

The DNA samples are to compare against a nearby burglary

FawnDrench · 01/08/2018 13:31

Could the identical twins angle be something to do with the surviving twin being able to corroborate dna from her sister or something like that?

QueenOfTheAndals · 01/08/2018 13:56

Or to emphasise how hard it was for the surviving twin to know, as she grew up, that every time her parents looked at her they were thinking of her sister.

OP posts:
Clawdy · 01/08/2018 15:51

Not convinced El is Elliot. Not many dads call their teenage sons "sweetheart."

tamsinconditions · 01/08/2018 15:54

Good point, Clawdy, James also used the name 'Els' on the phone I think. Perhaps it's someone called Elsie or Eloise, or part of a surname?

Graphista · 01/08/2018 17:47

I thought they'd discussed asking for Dna mainly to judge their reactions? Pete was only one reluctant but trying to cover that.

I'll be disappointed if the identical twin thing is a total red herring!

Do we know Elliot burgled village hall? If so I missed that.

Re identifying the body maternal and paternal Dna just as useful. Most murder victims don't have identical twins after all so method for id'ing necessary.

Saffkat · 01/08/2018 20:48

I wondered if the surviving twin is Hayley, who decided to reinvent herself as the "good" twin when she realised her sister was dead.
But thT is dependent on Hayley knowing for definite her sister died ; and on the police not having independent evidence about who actually had the plate in their arm, Hayley or sister.
Even if not a case of mistaken identity I think surviving sister has something to hide, because that is the theme in Unforgitten. Maybe she knew something that would have helped the police in 2000 but didn't reveal it for some reason?

lotsofplanetshaveanorth · 01/08/2018 20:56

Love Nicola Walker. In our house we call her Ruth whatever she’s in! Just fabulous. Anyone else smitten since her line to the mansplainer ‘nodding terms with homer’ in spooks? Just us then?!

On to the topic ...

Pete said he was coming into a big pay day soon - but that’s the classic refrain of the salesman. I think he is going to commit suicide.

Also when James called ‘els’ did he not say ‘it’s Dad?’

AveABanana · 01/08/2018 21:34

I loved the Columbo moment this week when at the end of the interview with Hollis she said 'and another thing' and asked him about where the school was where they met. Well she didn't use those words but it was pure Columbo Grin
