The robot Grandma one was probably 'Grinny'. We did the book at school. Very freaky.

'The Watcher in the Woods', a Disney film, it was on in the middle of the day when I was little, I only saw a bit of it and it terrified me.
I had this conversation with my boyfriend when we first met and we realised we'd both seen it but neither of us could remember what it was called. The mystery was finally solved one Sunday lunchtime at his parents house years later when it was on TV again. It was still scary.

The other traumatising TV moment when I was growing up was being made to watch 'Threads' in school as part of my Humanities class. I grew up in Sheffield so could recognise all the locations. It didn't help that the teacher had a map and explained to us exactly what our chances of survival were depending on which village we lived in.
Kids were leaving the class to be sick, and most of us had nightmares for weeks after.

And of course the Childcatcher. I still find a reason to leave the room when he appears. "Lollipops, Lollipops"

Grinny "you remember me don't you?"

Have seen watcher in the woods....does it end up in an old church?

Never heard of Threads.....

With Threads I remember the teacher asking me if I needed to leave the room as apparently I'd gone grey/green!

does anyone remember that thing with Charles Dance, where there was a man they'd cross bred with a gorilla?
Also Chimera was scary

MamaMaiasaura · 22/05/2007 21:41

The Skeleton Soldiers on Jason adn the Argonauts.. Still freaks me!

aardfark · 22/05/2007 21:42

Day of the Triffids ARRRGH

A film called Threads about what happened after a nuclear war - god knows why my parents let me watch that, scared the bejesus out of me, even now I shudder.

Also, strangely I am still really scared of bagpuss.

Did anyone watch Ghost Watch? It was a one off show that Craig Charles presented about a 'haunted house', it was live on halloween -early 90's i think. My (darling) Grandma put it on whilst babysitting for me and i was absolutely terrified, turns out it was all a set up but still terrifying esp the radiator tapping and weird gurgling girl

UnquietDad · 22/05/2007 21:58

yes, Sapphire & Steel

The Railway Station one. Especially when Sapphire opens her eyes and they are all BLACK inside.

PanicPants · 22/05/2007 21:59

Anyone mention the witch in the wizard of oz? When she stands on the roof of the house?

I cried for hours apparently!

Slacker · 22/05/2007 22:01

A Hammer Horror called The House That Bled to Death - why I was allowed to watch it aged 10 I don't know. I've not seen it since but I still remember one particularly grim scene vividly. Blood. Lots of it. Ugh!

aardfark · 22/05/2007 22:04

I have memories of an episode of the twilight zone where there was a girl with no mouth watching TV and another one where there was a big eye in the middle of the wall. Oooh scarey.

If anyone needs some light relief we are having a lark killing pigeons over here

bilblio · 22/05/2007 22:04

talcyoyo - Yes I do remember a bit in 'watcher in the woods' set in a church, there was a girl in white nightie was hovering in a circle of other girls. I think it was a seance. There was also lots of running through woods with the leaves whipping up behind them, and blokey remembers there being a blindfolded girl in a mirror.

Okay I'm scaring myself even remembering these things now.

castrolgtx - the Charles Dance thing was first born. I loved that, can't remember it being scary though.

shergar · 22/05/2007 22:14

Sapphire and Steel scared the heck out of me - there was one in particular where all the clocks stopped in a house and a young boy's parents vanished, and then an evil beam of light kept creeping down the stairs. I think Sapphire got stuck in a painting at some stage of the proceedings too!

There was also some very creepy children's programme with an old house where they uncovered a secret room, and there was a skeleton sat up in a bed in it (this at about 4pm!! WTH went on with children's programming in the 1970s?!).

Also frightened by The Amazing Mr. Blunden, and another kids' programme called Nobody's House, about a ghost who'd died of the plague in a Victorian workhouse.....

SpawnChorus · 22/05/2007 22:18

OMG - Chocky!! I could never remember the name! Do you know I was actually going to start a thread asking if anyone remembered a children's TV series about a little boy and a spooky blue triangle thing, but thought it was too much of a long shot. I've just watched some of it of youtube They don't make kids' TV like that nowadays, do they.

luciemule · 22/05/2007 22:22

that's really funny Bilblio - I had just mentioned Threads in another Nuclear related 'thread'! God it was awful but we actually bought it last year and made my parents watch it. It was soooo depressing. had dreams for years that we'd all end up like that one day.
And Chocky - I'd never remembered the name until you said. Wasn't the boy's dead father the blue triangle thing?

mishw · 22/05/2007 22:36

First Born I remember that castro - thought it was great, if a little scary

sibble · 23/05/2007 07:19

all been said...Tales of the Unexpected (esp the one where everybody in the village had a club foot!!), Dr Who's Daleks, the Birds, Hammer House of Horror any VIncent Price etc. movies - I used to watch them all with my Nan late at night. I still sleep with the covers over my head of a night, I'm sure from those days.
