Is coming back very soon! I'm guessing in the next 2-3 weeks.

Who's excited?! I've read all the books and can't wait for the new series.

OP posts:
SadieHH · 25/06/2018 07:41

I'm a committed fan of the books and the 70s series. Haven't even watched S4 of this, it's so far removed from the books that I can't see much point

Lollypop27 · 25/06/2018 08:14

I’m gettong confused with the timelines. Jeffery Charles. Was about 15 last night! The young girl they have as a house maid is still really young but she was still really young in season 2? But then Morwennas son is only 2? Hmm

midlifeblues · 25/06/2018 08:20

Yes the timeline is a bit odd and no one looks any older. Ros would be about 40 by now I think?

Toyboysrus · 25/06/2018 10:13

I've never read the books but my dad has them so I am planning to borrow them. I could read one on the beach when we go to Cornwall this year! Re the baby, she can't have anything immediately life threatening or Dishy Doc wouldn't have gone to the party. Maybe he suspects a condition rather than a disease?

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 25/06/2018 10:17

I was a bit confused about Geoffrey Charles but DS is also growing rapidly in his early teens Grin.

cherrytrees123 · 25/06/2018 10:37

This series is truly, truly dreadful. It seems to have been written by someone who scribbled a bit on an envelope before setting off for the day job. Even the actors look bored and mechanical. It is laughably bad. My OH was predicting what would happen five mins before it did, and was very accurate. George's crony taking a fancy to Elizabeth, the baby having something wrong with it... etc.
It's acting by numbers, and it's and embarrassment. I am old enough to remember the first one (just about). There is no comparison.
The tediousness of the shirt on /shirt off thing is just ridiculous.
I keep watching in the hope it will redeem itself, but each series is worse than the last.

Clionba · 25/06/2018 11:05

@SadieHH - so far removed from the books I actually think this series sticks quite closely to Winston Graham's books, more so than the 70s series.

Clionba · 25/06/2018 11:07

@cherrytrees123 I had fond memories of the 70s series, having loved it as a teenager. It hasn't stood the test of time! Very wobbly sets and some questionable acting! Robin Ellis is good though.

disahsterdahling · 25/06/2018 11:09

the baby having something wrong with it

that's in the book

And the Monk Adderley storyline gets more interesting and I suspect your DH won't predict the final outcome!

disahsterdahling · 25/06/2018 11:11

When I last watched a bit of the 1970s series I just thought how melodramatic it was even though I loved it when I was about 15 and it was being rerun on Monday afternoons after school. I think I prefer this version.

SadieHH · 25/06/2018 11:26

Clionba I'm just off out to work now, luckily for you WinkGrin otherwise I'd give you a run down of all the deviations in this series vs the 70s series! Yes that one deviated but this one is so far from the books it may as well be called something else!

Clionba · 25/06/2018 11:37

Looking forward to it, Sadie!!! GrinGrin
I recently re read all the books, in between series 3 and 4. Very enjoyable, obviously open to interpretation!
Winston Graham famously hated the 70s series for the way it messed with the characters and stories. Who knows what he'd think of this one!! GrinGrin

beguilingeyes · 25/06/2018 12:50

The second of the 70s series was much closer to the books than this one. What was that nonsense on the beach about, and Elizabeth's mysterious drug habit.

beguilingeyes · 25/06/2018 12:52

He only hated the first four episodes of the original series, he was a consultant on the second series and was even in it. He was close to the cast for the rest of his life.

Clionba · 25/06/2018 15:32

That's interesting. I saw an interview with him some years ago. I know he liked Robin Ellis, but was unhappy at the way the scenes with Demelza were written.

HarryLovesDraco · 25/06/2018 18:55

Is the baby going to die Sad or does she have a chromosomal type disorder?

Toyboysrus · 25/06/2018 19:15

Harry, I hope the baby has a teeny tiny mild disorder but can still live a long and happy life. Remember Ross carrying Julia's tiny coffin? I hope they don't put us through that again.

Magicpaintbrush · 26/06/2018 07:18

Does anybody else think that this series feels rushed? Like they are galloping through everything too quickly.

Reverend Osbourne is like the Poldark version of oily Mr Collins from Pride and Prejudice, though much more of a baddie, he has that same air that makes your skun crawl.

I would like to see them make more usevof Prudie - she is one of my favourite characters and had some great scenes in series 1 and 2, I think they are under using her.

Magicpaintbrush · 26/06/2018 07:19

Bloody typos on my phone, sorry Blush

FaithEverPresent · 28/06/2018 21:27

I am finally up to date after watching seasons 1&2 on Netflix, 3 on DVD and 4 on catch up!

I am still cross with Ross about the sex with Elizabeth. I was there thinking Is this rape? because she did clearly say no more than once.

I do think I’ll need to read the books, I imagine there are bits of backstory missing I’d like to know. Time line frustrations this week included 6 months passing one presumes from when Caroline knows she’s pregnant to giving birth yet Geoffrey Charles seems to have aged about 5 years?!

But still - I love this show! I love a good bodice ripping period drama, plenty of strong female characters. I fancy the pants off Aiden Turner - DH is not impressed! GrinBlush

eatyourveg · 29/06/2018 17:31

Wish Morwenna would stab odious Osborne with her sewing needle. Repeatedly. In the eyes.
Me too - I would like to see her and Drake together

For those who have read the books - Is Elizabeth's son going to secretly go out with Demelza's daughter when they get older and will the paternity issue ever be revealed?

gdyuweoguo · 30/06/2018 17:10

@eatyourveg No, Valentine (Elizabeth's son) never dates Clowance, though Ross and Demelza are always worried about the possibility.

In regards to his paternity, it's never publically revealed, they obviously didn't have paternity tests, but Ross and Demelza both know he is Ross's son, and Ross basically admits this to himself near the end. Other characters, including Verity, seem to guess as Valentine looks very much like Ross and Ross's father, but there is no public accusation or reveal if that's what you mean.

However, Valentine guesses the truth and even asks Ross at one point. I think all the characters knew the truth, but they all keep quiet about it.

@FaithEverPresent The scene is even more rapey in the books actually. Here's how it goes:

Elizabeth: “Ross, you can't intend. Stop! Stop, I tell you.”

But he took no further notice. He lifted her in his arms and carried her to the bed.

Later on Ross remembers the scene and says she stopped protesting and became into it (not those exact words!) so I think it's up to interpretation.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 01/07/2018 22:06

Do Ross and Demelza have more babies?

That was a really emotional episode 😟

Clionba · 01/07/2018 22:21

That was so upsetting. Dwight carrying that little coffin. So sad.
Yes, they do have more. Daughter and son.

CoolCarrie · 01/07/2018 22:36

I thought the baby might have had CF.
I thought women didn’t go to funerals in those days, even their own children.
