Is coming back very soon! I'm guessing in the next 2-3 weeks.

Who's excited?! I've read all the books and can't wait for the new series.

OP posts:

I thought it was good, very layered. The relationship between Ross and Demelza is realistic and compelling. The hanging scene was awful and makes you understand how powerless the poor were.

MinesaPinot · 11/06/2018 14:28

Me and DH thoroughly enjoyed me (I may have enjoyed one scene more than DH mind you....!).

We both found the execution scene unbelievably tense and agree with Clionba about how powerless the poor were.

And quite how Demelza can even entertain Hugh, however, with his puppy dog eyes and awful poetry is beyond me. DH described him as 'wetter than a wet weekend in Rhyl' (apologies to any Mumsnetters who may live in Rhyl). I suspect he may not last the next two expisodes, let alone the series.

All in all a good start, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

MinesaPinot · 11/06/2018 14:30

Oops, just re-read message. Should have read 'thoroughly enjoyed it'. Talk about a Freudian slip!

Clionba · 11/06/2018 17:29

Very true! He does seem soppy. I think Demelza is sorry for him.

kateandme · 11/06/2018 18:19

why are we still ogling over a rapist acting like hes a hero

Lollyb86 · 11/06/2018 19:45

I thought the way the story is told between demelza and Ross felt very real and honest.

Theinconstantgardener · 11/06/2018 20:10

I thought it was wonderful.

BadTasteFlump · 12/06/2018 11:46

I thought that the general consensus was that although it did appear to be rape in the book, in this tv series it was open to interpretation?

That aside - I enjoyed the first episode. It doesn't bother me that the story is different to the books - it's only 'based on' the books so I'm happy to take it as it is. My only problem is some of the dialogue - whenever Ross stands up to start one of his 'rousing' speeches I start cringing because they are always terrible!

beguilingeyes · 13/06/2018 21:56

A lot of Debbie Horsfield's dialogue is awful. Whenever she uses Winston Graham's words they shine through.

IrenetheQuaint · 13/06/2018 22:17

Totally agree, beguiling eyes. I'm generally depressed by how rubbish TV dialogue is (with the occasional exception, e.g. Russell T Davies).

Clionba · 14/06/2018 07:46

The good thing is that it seems to upset a lot of silly men that Ross appears (very occasionally) without his shirt on. They're spitting feathers btl on the Guardian thread! Most entertaining.

happymittens · 15/06/2018 09:01

Does anyone know what Elizabeth put into George's drink? He seemed to know about it, so unfortunately I don't think it was poison...

Clionba · 15/06/2018 15:51

I think it was some sort of exilir. She's keen to conceive another baby to put the doubts to rest over him being the father of Valentine.

ThePartingLass · 17/06/2018 22:44

So obvious that Ross would win the election, great watching George storm out. Suspect there are troubled times ahead for Ross and Demelza.

Tansie1 · 17/06/2018 23:17

Why did Warleggan sack his game-keeper/heavy after the wrestling match?

BadTasteFlump · 18/06/2018 11:14

Tansie I wondered that too. I thought it must be either because Elizabeth was sucking lemons at the way he was trying to poke Sam's eye out so he was keeping her sweet, or that he showed himself to be a thug in front of the crowd and Warleggan wanted to save his reputation before the election.

I don't understand why Demelza and the children couldn't go to London with Ross - Elizabeth had been packing in anticipation of going with George if he had won, so why couldn't Demelza?

beguilingeyes · 18/06/2018 12:41

In the book it's because he's only just discovered that she might have been unfaithful (he finds a poem that she'd hidden) and is partially going into parliament to get away from her for a while.

Tansie1 · 18/06/2018 13:55

Hugh wasn't well cast, was he? Needed to be a bit older and worldly- hard to believe Demelza the character would've have fallen for such a wet when she had smouldery Poldark!

xsquared · 18/06/2018 17:02

Didn't George tell Elizabeth that he would sack Tom in the previous season when he set fire to Drake's business? Elizabeth confronted George over his "jealous and vile suspicions" and expressed disgust at the way he was using Tom Harry to get at Ross by harrassing and bullying the Carne brothers, especially Drake.

Tansie1 · 18/06/2018 18:26

Ah, missed that bit! Admittedly, I only engage my most superficial cortex when it comes to Poldark. By and large that's served me well!

OnlyonMN · 18/06/2018 20:01

Well she didn't have smouldery poldark did she? Elizabeth did.Wink

beguilingeyes · 18/06/2018 20:06

Did I dream it or did they suggest that Hugh died because he 'gave up' after Demelza said she wouldn't shag him any more. Seriously?!

BadTasteFlump · 18/06/2018 20:10

Yes they were suggesting that - in more flowery, historical language... She must have been one hell of a lay Grin.

Tansie1 · 18/06/2018 21:07

onlyonmn Are you suggesting what my 16 year old self would call 'seconds'? 😊 My standards remain. Ready to be lowered given the right provocation.....😂

OnlyonMN · 18/06/2018 22:08

@Tansie

Oh dear woman! where's your pride? GrinGrin
