Is coming back very soon! I'm guessing in the next 2-3 weeks.

Who's excited?! I've read all the books and can't wait for the new series.

OP posts:

Osborne didn't have a dignified death and everyone thought he deserved his comeuppance.

beguilingeyes · 02/08/2018 15:15

George survives to the end.

MissEliza · 02/08/2018 17:08

What about poor Jeffrey Charles? Poor little mite has lost both his parents. Can someone please explain how George even became master of Trenwith? Surely it would have passed down to JC? That bugs me and dh.

beguilingeyes · 02/08/2018 17:25

GC will inherit Trenwith, but he's still a minor so George will be his guardian until he's 21. He's away at school most of the time and then joins the army.

NovellNetware · 02/08/2018 17:30

I also don't understand how 'Verity', Ross's cousin is also Elizabeth's cousin, Demelza also calls her 'cousin' but i guess thats by marriage.

ElspethFlashman · 02/08/2018 17:57

I'm pretty sure George moves out of Trenwith anyway. It means nothing to him without Elizabeth.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/08/2018 18:24

But Verity is a Poldark - she would have been Elizabeth's SIL (sister of Francis, E's first husband). She would therefore be a cousin-in-law to Demelza.

starstarstarstar · 02/08/2018 20:32

George movs out of Trenwith, Geoffrey Charles inherits it and marries a Spanish girl and has a daughter (If I remember correctly)

NovellNetware · 02/08/2018 20:59

NewModel I didn't know she was Francis sister. That makes sense.

LapdanceShoeshine · 02/08/2018 22:23

Verity lived at Trenwith (along with lovely snarky Aunt Agatha) until she ran away with Capn Blamey.

It was always her home, but in those days was nothing like as classy as it became lately.

MissEliza · 03/08/2018 08:35

Thanks for the reassurances about Jeffrey Charles!

MissEliza · 03/08/2018 10:02

I'd like to read the books but don't want to go back to the beginning. What book picks up after this latest series, IFSWIM?

beguilingeyes · 03/08/2018 10:13

MissEliza the next book jumps forward ten years. I would really recommend starting at the beginning, or at least from The Black Moon (book five) which is where series three started.

SadieHH · 03/08/2018 10:39

The Stranger from the Sea is the next book but it's a very different feel from the previous 6 books and is largely recognised by the Poldark fandom as being the weakest book in the series, which I totally agree with. And yes there is a jump forward in time.

arriettyspiders · 03/08/2018 10:48

I thought that I remembered something from the 1st or 2nd series when Ross said something about the Warleggens that made him sound an utter snob!
I agree. This current series has toned it down but I thought there was more classism (particularly toward George) in the earlier Poldark series and the books. I always —well not quite always— felt a slight sympathy for George in any case.

arriettyspiders · 03/08/2018 10:48

Very sorry to hear the next season is to be the last.

LapdanceShoeshine · 03/08/2018 11:40

It makes sense though. Ross, Demelza et al as OAPs wouldn’t be nearly as enthralling Grin

starstarstarstar · 03/08/2018 19:22

@LapdanceShoeshine They're not quite OAPs (Demelza gives birth to her fifth and final child in the later books), but I get what you mean.

I do think it's a shame not to dramatise the whole series though. There's still many stories left to tell, and I would have liked to have seen Valentine, Clowance, Jeremy and Bella on screen.

starstarstarstar · 03/08/2018 19:24

@arriettyspiders I got the impression Ross tormented George at school for being of a lower class, and that's how the rivalry started.

For example, he would torment him with frogs (his biggest phobia), which is why Drake did the same in the series.

arriettyspiders · 03/08/2018 19:42

Yes I'd have liked to have seen all the children on screen and their stories.

Of the many examples of classism, there are also descriptions (possibly not coming from Ross, someone else will remember more accurately, it's many years since I first read) where George's neck/physical appearance is mentioned negatively, and more than once, and connected to his lowly background.

I suppose it is to be expected and of its time in any case.

beguilingeyes · 03/08/2018 19:46

All that stuff about the bullying at school is a Horsfield invention. I hated that. They got on well when younger. George was Francis's best man. George just didn't want his newly lansccaped pond messed up with noisy toads.

LapdanceShoeshine · 03/08/2018 20:00

I imagine we will get all of them in series 5, so you should be quite happy with that Smile

Sadly I found all the later books far less gripping than the early ones - I bought & read them as they came out, but had no inclination to reread as I did with the first books (repeatedly Grin)

But I bet Debbie Horsfield will make them more engrossing!

MissEliza · 04/08/2018 00:37

II think I'll start from the beginning because I now realise so much stuff has been left out.

icelolly99 · 04/08/2018 12:58

I've just started reading Book 7 which is what the current series is based on. It's interesting to see the differences in the characters and storylines. For example Prudie is only in Book 1 and by now Ross and Demelza have 4 indoor servants. It bothers me too much that the ladies (Demelza) rarely wear hats at a time in history when hats would have been an essential part of your attire......
I cried at the last episode even though I knew Elizabeth would die. I blame that Debbie Horsfield putting us through an emotional wringer. Argh.

woodhill · 04/08/2018 16:57

Th engine bit with Jeremy was quite boring but he liked someone called Truby if I remember right and she played hard to get
