I enjoyed the first series (which is currently on iplayer) - some terrific performances, esp from Lesley Manville, Dorothy Atkinson and Lisa McGrillis. For any other fans, Series 2 starts 20 FebSmile

I've been reflecting on the theme song: "You're going to miss me when I'm gone" which in the first series seemed to reference Dave who has just died and is missed by everyone - his wife, son, parents & best friend. But now in the 2nd series it seems to refer to Jason's assumptions about Cathy

Orlandointhewilderness · 28/03/2018 19:25

i adore this. by far the best thing i have seen on tv for years, it is quality all through. not a wrong move in it.

The80sweregreat · 28/03/2018 19:35

No - never a bad move. Best thing on tv in years. Well written and acted and I dint say that very often.

Hookedoncatnip · 28/03/2018 21:56

I think that Kelly not eating dinner was about Cathy's cooking not being great. It was referenced again with the grandparents suggesting cookery lessons.

The scene with Reg dancing to Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was brilliant. Him dancing and then looking over to Maureen who looked very much as if she had died. So touching the way he adjusted her skirt and her hair. I think he was relieved she was ok and then reflecting on how one day he may have to face being without her. So much going on there with so little dialogue. The acting is really sublime.

The way Cathy finally told Michael how her feelings have grown. So beautifully done. I think Michael was so overwhelmed that he had a little cry in the bathroom. He had probably spent the last few months wrestling his true feelings after the "Maybe I just miss Dave" response that Cathy blurted out. 40 years of unrequited love surely can't be wrestled away in such a short time.

I think the reaction Jason had was a big part of why C & M have been so coy.

I love this program so much!

MrsJamin · 28/03/2018 22:21

I just watched it again and you can see when Jason looks at Cathy and Michael his eyes dip to where they are holding hands. I think he'll be OK with them together in the next series. I love how the episodes jump a few months at a time. I don't think Dave was awful at all, he was a big personality and left a big hole in the family.

simbobs · 28/03/2018 22:27

Is there going to be another series? Surely the whole point was "moving on".

FellOutOfBed2wice · 29/03/2018 00:27

southeastdweller ah potato patarto, they’re basically the same place. Although Him and Her was definitely set in Walthamstow so maybe when their journey to the carvary was mentioned and they mentioned some Walthamstow places I just assumed. Husband is from there so he’s very proud.

happystory Saw this on Twitter and thought you’d enjoy. I quite want it written on a tee shirt !

TheFirstMrsOsmond I have also been over analysing the theme song these past two series. I also think it was a reference to Dave in series one and now it’s about Michael because she realises that she’s going to miss him when he’s gone

simbobs Series three being written now and filmed in September for airing next year. But it will be the final series. Him and Her went out on a real high and the characters who deserved happiness got it, so I have faith that Golaszewski will give the characters a fitting ending.

Also Ross Boatman isn’t getting enough for his playing or Derek in my opinion- he’s brilliant. I know or have known so many plonkers like him in my life. In fact all of my uncles and uncles-in-law are basically Derek. Loved the exchange with Pauline about having never looked at another woman since he met her... “Apart from my porn. But you know I like my porn”.

Did anyone else notice that Pauline as tearful watching the fireworks too? I think she appreciated what Derek said to her about their future, even if it wasn’t said in the most romantic way.

CanIBuffalo · 29/03/2018 06:22

Clearly the theme tune is about how we're all going to miss them when the series ends Grin

desperatehousewife21 · 29/03/2018 07:04

I laughed when Pauline said ‘Kent’ as well as I live there!

FellOutOfBed2wice · 29/03/2018 07:58

Well it is a The Garden of England desperatehousewife21 ...what’s not to love? 😆❤️ But the real question is do you like anything made by an Artisan?

desperatehousewife21 · 29/03/2018 11:19

True! DH and I have often said we’d not want to live anywhere else...in the UK at least!

I can’t say I’m into all things artisan though Grin

dontcallmelen · 29/03/2018 14:47

@FellOutOfBed2wice yy Ross Boatman he plays the character so well & has had some great lines, I think it’s the perfect ensemble cast they just all work so well, I’m still skitting over ‘Kent’

LemonadeWithACherry · 29/03/2018 16:42

Just wonderful. Made me cry again and I don't cry easily!

Such an amazing cast. I love Pauline. I laughed so much when the garden chair collapsed under her and had to keep rewinding it to watch her expression again Grin

leccybill · 29/03/2018 20:19

Pauline's delivery is incredible.
'Shallots. Well done"

KNain · 30/03/2018 11:14

I agree. The acting in this is superb.

I usually really hate when children/babies are introduced into programmes but I think with Mum it would really work if Jason & Kelly had a baby - especially with the format of each episode being a few months after the last. You'd see them learn and adapt to being new parents. And you'd see the baby grow over the series.

I'd like the dynamic of them to be coming round to visit Cathy but Jason still treating the place like his home too. Especially if Michael was now living there.

spiderlight · 30/03/2018 13:27

Pauline's delivery is spot on every time. Her face is just superb. I'd love to know what she's like in real life.

Horsemad · 30/03/2018 18:12

Well I don't know whether to be Shock or Grin My sister said Pauline reminds her of me!!!!

Hmmm.

Cleebope2 · 31/03/2018 01:33

Shallots. Well done. Yes leccybill spot on hilariously patronising. Someone said in a review that Pauline and husband need their own spin off. Too right.

EnidButton · 31/03/2018 01:36

Kent.

YoohooDorothy · 31/03/2018 15:35

Definitely think Pauline loved that edge to Derek's past, so unlike what she's used to. She's been trying to mould him into the image of her ex husband, and herself to a certain extent but the thought of Derek being rough and ready, breaking the rules has sparked an attraction in her. Will be interesting if she feels able to explore more of Derek's inner bloke!

I also think that Reg and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was heartbreaking. I thought it was interesting that it was a song from the 80s rather than the 50s/60s. It suggested to me that as a couple they were still enjoying music well past their courting days. The message of the song and the sight of his wife flat out in the chair was in total contrast. He had nobody to dance with, nobody to share 'remember that time when...' moments with. He knows she is slipping away from him.

I'm glad they didn't have her die in that moment. For me it would have been too dramatic. The beauty of Mum is the joy and heartbreak in the small, everyday moments. I suspect she may have died next time we see them though, though i really hope not.

I don't dislike Jason for how he feels, though it is immature. He doesn't want his dad to be forgotten, or the idea that Cathy and Michael might be glad that he is dead so that they can be together. Maybe he is concerned that there might have been something between them before his dad died. Or maybe he thinks his dad might have been angry that they got together. I think he'll come round.

When Jason was talking about buying everything blue and white, she was being very Cathy-like. Not saying what she really thought, but allowing Jason his little dream. I thought that was a good touch!

Cary2012 · 31/03/2018 20:25

Cathy's comment to Kelly about her clothes was pivotal. So many times she's bitten her tongue, said 'okay' and ignored the insensitivity. When she said, 'like what you're wearing' about the poncho ensemble, signaled our new Cathy, who bit the bullet and finally told Michael how she felt.
About time too.
Brilliant final episode.
Hope they sweep up every award going.
And all together now: snood.

The80sweregreat · 01/04/2018 09:03

its strange isn't it? if you say any word over and over it ends up sounding odd and you start thinking ' who invented that word'? don t you. language is fascinating.
yep, lets hope they win some awards - although most people i know have never watched it.

SimonBridges · 01/04/2018 09:17

But it wasn’t a snood.

Handbaghag · 01/04/2018 16:23

This is a fantastic series and I'm sorry I missed series 1 dropping off iPlayer. Brilliant acting, especially by 'Michael'. Looking forward for series 3!

southeastdweller · 01/04/2018 16:28

Series 1 is available on DVD and iTunes, Handbag.
