Thanks Seneca, I thought Cold Mountain (the book) was set in North Carolina.

AKA that looks like coffee but it maybe has some whisky in it Wink.

LonelyOversharer · 13/11/2017 07:01

I got up early Grin

That is a bloody good episode! Enjoy

snozzlemaid · 13/11/2017 07:54

I watched it last night and I really enjoyed it too. Will rewatch later with dp.
I really like Fergus and Marsali, perfect casting.

Lessstressedhemum · 13/11/2017 10:20

Ooh, I liked that. Marsali was fab. Jamie quite suits being a concerned father. It's very funny. And Claire finally got round to telling him that she loves him. About time, too.

Why did they have to make Elias so young and cute. I foresee heartbreak.

Good episode. Nice quickie. Just off to watch next week's preview.

quirkychick · 13/11/2017 14:32

That was great Grin.

Jamie's going to be cross...

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 13/11/2017 14:48

I’m going to go against the grain and say it was an ok episode.

It’s good that C&J are back together again, but wait! Oh noes!

Would’ve liked to have seen more of the relationship between Claire and Marsali developing and more of Mr Willoughby. In fact, we could probably have had all of that if some of the Boston stuff that no one cared about anyway had been cut.

And I really, really could do without Claire’s inane voiceovers. I enjoyed being on the ship because the days rolled into one and it reminded me of a simpler time. Eh?

One last thing. I don’t remember Marsali being quite this feisty in the books? (Although I’m enjoying her character more than anybody’s at the moment).

TempusFuckit · 13/11/2017 15:37

Watched at lunchtime - and loved it! I don't remember the doldrums from the novel, it was new wasn't it? A great device to tie together the voyage - and I loved how they used it to give Yi Tien Cho's story another layer of meaning.

In fact I've been impressed at how they've handled that whole storyline - I also loved how you saw the characters he painted on the decks in water dry and fade away.

I follow Terry Dresbach's @OutlanderCostume account, and it's been fascinating reading about how the deconstruction of Claire's costume reflects how she's letting go of the sadness of 20 years and rediscovering herself, and love. From all buttoned up to African Queen.

Her tweets about Claire's dress on the cover of EW are also really interesting - the thought she's put into what happened to Claire's Paris dresses, and how they would have been remade, sold etc by Jenny and then Marsali is so thorough. She clearly loves what she does.

snozzlemaid · 13/11/2017 15:44

It’s such interesting reading isn’t it? I never realised what thought went into costumes.

TempusFuckit · 13/11/2017 15:54

I get the impression she puts more thought into it than most. The attention to detail is something else - the way the Batsuit is deliberately a bit shonkily made because that's the limit of Claire's skills. The age lines in the yellow silk dress - presumably from where it was hemmed for a shorter Lallybroch woman. And in the previous season, the way she used the Dior bar suit as inspiration - she really, really thinks about it doesn't she?

I did get a bit annoyed when she did the podcasts in season one because she just wouldn't let Ron get a word in edgeways - but Twitter is definitely her medium.

snozzlemaid · 13/11/2017 16:04

Have you seen the way she’s had to justify Claire wearing a belt? So many people seem unhappy about that.
I think some people are way too invested in the show and need to calm down about such things.

MoNigheanDonn · 13/11/2017 16:09

Courtney yes it was good but not a great episode like 6 & 8 imho.

Lessstressedhemum · 13/11/2017 18:34

Why on earth do people care about such things. It's like the green ribbon. Some folk are totally over-invested and need to get a grip.

Marsali is very feisty in the books, particularly to begin with, when she is still raging at Jamie and bitter about Claire. She is a very strong character.

GreatWhites · 13/11/2017 19:24

Loved Marsali, especially the shot of her glaring up at Jamie when she's about two feet shorter than him.

Also found Fergus' list of ladies quite funny, the actors are very good together.

Claire's skirts are HUGE. I presume the sailors couldn't cope with giving her breeks?

Marsali · 13/11/2017 19:25

Oh wooohoo. New name to celebrate Grin

Marsali · 13/11/2017 19:34

Can't stop laughing at this, even though I probably shouldn't.

Brazilian fans aren't terribly pleased because the subtitles for the last episode accidentally got switched with porn.

twitter.com/TallShipProds/status/930108188136837120

I pity the person who spent their Monday morning sorting that out. Oh god, I'm crying laughing Grin Grin

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 13/11/2017 20:28

One of the things that pisses me off about Claire as a character is that she just slots into 18th Century life like she was born to it with some things, for example speech patterns and not showing any kind of awe or amazement at historical stuff like those big ships (I’ve been on a replica that was built for Hornblower and it almost blew my mind).

But yet she can’t seem to grasp how superstitious they all are and tries to talk them out of their ‘stupidity’ as if they’re all going to go, ‘d’ you know what? I think you’re right. I’m going to abandon my deeply held beliefs just because you say so’.

quirkychick · 13/11/2017 20:36

Courtney it is quite funny, though. I don't think the character of Claire pisses me off as such. I quite like her direct spikiness (?) but sometimes you want to remind her that duh, it's the 18th century and all that, most people would not have been that literate, let alone have those more rational, scientific beliefs.

I wonder what the "porn subtitles" were *Marsali.

quirkychick · 13/11/2017 20:36

Bold fail Marsali

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 13/11/2017 20:51

They’ve screen shot one on Twitter.

It’s Claire looking at Jamie saying ‘Your dick is so big’ 😳

snozzlemaid · 13/11/2017 21:24

I saw that story about the subtitles too.
Hilarious!

quirkychick · 13/11/2017 21:26

Courtney Grin

Lessstressedhemum · 14/11/2017 10:33

That is funny, and clearly not wrong Grin

Courtney, I agree. Claire has always ground my gears. I know she is supposed to be a strong, trail-blazing woman, but just once it would be nice to see her do what she is told by someone who understands the time and circumstance better. It is almost always her big mouth and headstrong attitude that lead them into difficulties and prevent them living the nice, calm, happy life that we all want to see.

And, She always thinks that she knows best. Now, obviously, sometimes she does, but I really think that she should take Jamie's word for things a lot more often than she does. She also completely forgets about women's status in the C18th. Just because Jamie is quite progressive for the time doesn't mean anyone else is. it's nae wonder folk keep thinking she is a witch.

Loved the last 2 episodes, so much more believable than the print shop one where she pops up and they just carry on. Marsali is growing on me. Really enjoying his they are playing Mr Willoughby, feels like he has dignity which was not the case in the books.
Jamie still looks sexy white puking in a bucket.
Been stretching out the last Outlander book. Shall I embark on Lord Grey books or are they disappointing?

quirkychick · 14/11/2017 11:36

I agree about Claire's doubts, much more realistic (if you can be realistic in a show about travelling back in time 200yrs to find your long lost lover Wink). Also, Jamie pointing out that they're not yet on strong ground with each other.

I've watched this twice and really enjoyed it, I think I just enjoy men in tricorn etc. sailing on the high seas. Talking of which, did anyone who's watched Black Sails spot that the cook on the Porpoise is Randall from Black Sails, I wonder if they'll be more crossing over...
