J would have probably ended up with L if C hadn’t appeared . It’s only his years as an outlaw that stopped him from being married off already. Most people married for practicality rather than any great love affair in those times.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 08/11/2017 19:45

I have to admit that the biggest plot hole is Jamie being a virgin on his wedding night because no lassie would want an outlaw. The man is sex on legs!

AKAmyself · 08/11/2017 19:45

I’m glad you all agree with Ron Moore about the chemistry thing, and about DG being a weird self-aggrandising drama queen.

I think the scriptwriters are doing her work a HUGE favour with their thoughtful, deep adapatation

I know you’re not being entirely serious but I’m sure that was explained at some point by him being all noble because his dad told him not to shag anyone he didn’t want to marry in case they got pregnant.

Lessstressedhemum · 08/11/2017 20:09

Agree, AKA, the writers are doing her a huge favour. She is not as good a writer as either she or her worshippers think. Jamie and his awesome lines and sense of humour are what keeps us reading. All this rot about DG being the greatest writer of modern times is a farce. And that's from me, who loves the books.

That is exactly why he was a virgin. Brian Dhu told him that he shouldn't shag any girl he wasn't prepared to marry if she got pregnant. I mean, come on. He was obviously popular with the lasses, he admits as much to Claire in the books, and he is sex on a stick. Girls would have been practically queueing up to jump him, outlaw or no.

Thank you for your explanation. An honorable man (who is still sex on legs)

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 08/11/2017 20:26

Obviously there is a lot that has to be cut from the books but is there anything that you think the scriptwriters changed that was really much better in the book?

Lessstressedhemum · 08/11/2017 20:44

I wish more had been made of Jamie's time in Ardsmuir. That always seemed to me to be when he grew into a real leader, and the development of his relationship with John grey is lovely. There were a few bits in season one that I thought were better in the book, but thank goodness they missed out the Wolf wrestling!

I felt more could have been made of Jamie recovering from Wentworth. In the books Jamie and Claire are in the monastery for a good couple of months (which obviously equates to at least 400 pages Wink) but I think you got to see the recovery more, whereas in the show it felt a little bit too quick. Would have totally swapped an episode of singing and sword dancing for that.

quirkychick · 08/11/2017 21:08

Haha, the wolf wrestling! I just happen to have spoken to a man who told me how to kill a wolf with my bare hands... Grin.

I love the books too and literally lost hours of sleep reading them, but I'm under no illusion that they're perfect. I think the difficulty with a tv show is that if there are badly drawn characters, then it becomes glaringly obvious. How does an actor portray something that doesn't ring true?

I love that you don't really know where the plot is going and that makes it very exciting, but it can just be bonkers.

SenecaFalls · 08/11/2017 21:08

Not for me. But as I have admitted, there is a lot about the early books I don't remember. But every change the scriptwriters have come up with makes sense to me.

quirkychick · 08/11/2017 21:11

And me Seneca. The whole thing flows better and you get to see more of character's motivations.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 08/11/2017 21:13

Just the scriptwriters have already brought Murtagh back from the dead, I wonder if we'll see him again. I suppose he was sent to the colonies when Ardsmuir closed

SenecaFalls · 08/11/2017 21:15

I haven't seen the twitter spat with DG and Ron Moore, but I did see him talking about their decision to make Laoghaire somewhat sympathetic. And as for chemistry, it may be easier to do non-chemistry on the page, but it's harder to do onscreen. Every woman sharing a scene with Jamie, up to and including Mrs. Fitz, seems to have chemistry with him. And it makes sense to me. He's a charismatic man. Every charismatic person I have known in RL has some degree of chemistry with almost everyone.

DryWhiteagainW · 08/11/2017 22:31

All very interesting Lassies. And love the new thread title.
Re the bat outfit, in Hellwater episode Geneva wears a waistcoat almost identical, apart from the buttons, to Claire's .....in the scene where Jamie is "shovelling shit" Incase you need to check it out r
The seams are in exactly the same places etc........could they really have recycled so soon? And why is there so much blue? . I think the detailing on the costumes is incredible. How they've aged the fabric on Jamie's shoulder, the way Jenny and the other women's sleeves are laced to their bodices......Marsali's very ex pensive looking outfit in printed silk? rather than tweed when they bust in on C and J. Would love to spend time in the costume dept. I bet they recycle some Black Sails female costumes.

snozzlemaid · 08/11/2017 23:17

Do you follow Outlander Costume on twitter? Terry gives some amazing insight into the process her and the team go through.
She does have to put up with a certain level of abuse unfortunately though from those crazy fans that like to complain about the tiniest stupidest detail.

SenecaFalls · 08/11/2017 23:35

I haven't been following her on Twitter, but at one time she had a blog that I followed. I don't know if she still does the blog. She and her team do amazing work. I think she's very knowledgeable about historical dress, and the departures that she makes from authenticity tend to be very well considered.

quirkychick · 09/11/2017 06:49

I think it's much more interesting to have Laoghaire more sympathetic, just as it was more interesting to make Frank more sympathetic. The issue in both these marriages is surely that Claire and Jamie love each other and are therefore unhappy with someone else. It makes it much more realistic.

I'm not sure I want to be on twitter, but I absolutely love the costumes, so beautiful. I wonder if Claire having much the same dress (apart from briefly at Lallybroch), is to try to show how little time has passed, things between her and Jamie are all so new and not yet resolved. The dress also makes her look older, and I hadn't noticed it referenced Geneva's dress. I assume the waistcoat style was popular at the time.

snozzlemaid · 09/11/2017 06:56

I think Terry has said that C has not yet had time to get new clothes. She came with just the clothes she was wearing and thats all she has for the time being.
It was really interesting to hear how she came up with the clothes C made for herself. Terry can't sew much so she imagined herself in that position having to make suitable clothes from what was available in the 1960s.
She posts lots of pictures of things that inspire the costumes and them being made.

Lessstressedhemum · 09/11/2017 09:24

I don't have twitter, so haven't seen that, but I can easily believe it. I saw lots of complaining that Jamie didn't have a green ribbon in his hair in the printshop. For goodness sake, who can even bring themselves to care about such things. The costumes are great. The tartans, for instance, are much more accurate than the ones in the books. Most folk would have worn muted, natural colours because bright ones (like Stuart red) were very expensive and not readily available.

I love the costumes, my favourite scene is the one where Mrs Fitz dresses Claire after she arrives at Leoch. I loved seeing all the underpinnings (especially the bum roll) and how the dress is actually several separate pieces

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 09/11/2017 09:57

The scene on windy cliff top at end of episode 8 - CB definitely wasn't wearing a wig, you can't get that sort of natural hairline from a hairpiece, not matter how good. SH's hair looked more natural as well
(I think I'm slightly obsessed!)

MoNigheanDonn · 09/11/2017 10:43

SH said in a recent interview that he misses his long hair and may grow it back - please do it SH Grin we miss it!

I don’t think the pose that Sam is throwing on that cover is going to any of those rumours to bed any time soon Confused It’s a teeny, tiny bit camp.

And CB looks like old enough to be his mother. The photo they’ve chosen is awful.
