I could cry at the amount of (presumably) women saying they couldn't get used to a 'lady doctor'! Shock

Do the doctors xy chromosomes, penis and testosterone really make any difference whatsoever to plot of the average Dr Who episode?

I guess going back to the 'golden age' it mattered a bit with the whole Ten/Rose thing, but I can't imagine it would have been any less of a crowd pleaser if David Tennant had been an attractive and rakish woman. Not actually that hard to imagine.

Funnyfarmer · 02/07/2017 22:29

Seeing as Moffats inability to write female characters I think I would have made a massive difference to past episodes.
I really can't say why I think I would struggle to bond with a female doctor.
Maybe because again they would try to hard with the writing and make a balls of it. Or they just wouldn't know where to go with it.
Rivers character could have easily have been a doctor. Her personality had all the right traits. But alot of people especially women really struggled to take to her

I don't want a female doctor and I make no apologies for that. Equally, I wouldn't want a male taking over a traditionally female character.

I never saw Missy as the Master; she was Missy and a character in her own right to me. I mean I knew she was the master but it was almost irrelevant really - she was just a great villain.

paxillin · 02/07/2017 22:38

River Song is fantastic. She has many sides to her, she's bad and good and intelligent. And she is a women very clearly over 30 who is unashamedly sexy without that fact being shown as tragic. A doctor like that would be fun. No PC boxes need ticking.

coldcanary · 02/07/2017 23:39

I really took to River Song too. I would have loved to see her do more with PC's Doctor, there was much more of a spark between them in one episode than there was in a whole season of Matt Smith!

user1487175389 · 03/07/2017 06:38

But there's nothing inherently male about the doctor anyway! The show doesn't just have female fans because they want to sleep with him, but because they relate to the character. Some people on here have a really hard time accepting change. But change is a part of life.

SoupDragon · 03/07/2017 07:25

Perhaps we just have a different opinion to you?

Funnyfarmer · 03/07/2017 09:22

I think if anyone can accept change in a show it's DW fans.
It's not about accepting change. It's believing something just wouldn't work.
We could be wrong a female dr could be great. But for know I believe it wouldn't work and wouldn't like to see it.

What is it specifically about women that you feel means they would all (3.5 billion of them) be incapable of playing the Doctor? If you're going to have opinions they need to be backed up.

SoupDragon · 03/07/2017 13:01

No they don't.

To me the doctor is male. Some characters are female and I wouldn't want them played by a man. That is all.

This is how I feel about it and I won't be bullied into changing my mind by you.

TheHiphopopotamus · 03/07/2017 13:15

I don't know how I'd feel about a female Doctor. I think it might be a bit gimmicky tbh, especially coming so soon after a female Master and with all the uproar about the female Ghostbusters.

If they were going to make him/her a woman, I reckon it would have to be a well known actress and I can't think of anyone at the minute who could pull it off.

Alfieisnoisy · 03/07/2017 13:16

Tilda Swinton could do it easily.

StormTreader · 03/07/2017 13:31

Much as I love Tilda, her main selling point is that she can be very androgynous - if we're going to have a female doctor, lets not water it down by saying a woman would only work if she looks kind of like a man.

user1487175389 · 03/07/2017 13:35

No one is trying to bully you soup. I hope you and your blinkers are very happy together. Hmm

user1487175389 · 03/07/2017 13:48

She is androgynous, but if it eases the more stubborn and prejudiced amongst us into accepting a female doctor then that's another bonus (besides her being an amazing screen presence)

TheHiphopopotamus · 03/07/2017 14:35
Hmm

People are entitled to not want a female Doctor, just the same as people who would like one.

FWIW, I don't think the next Doctor will be female, that's just Moffat winding everyone up.

QuiQuaiQuod · 03/07/2017 15:35

I don't want a female doctor and I make no apologies for that. Equally, I wouldn't want a male taking over a traditionally female character.

soup Im with you, and your following posts.

without a bunfight starting here, whats the obsession with everyone having to be female all the time these days anyway?

would some people accept it the other way? if eg- they remade charlies angels with men? or cagney and Lacey with 2 men? eh?

some things just work the way they do, Doctor Who and James Bond included.

and soup im with you regarding Missy. yes shes supposed to be the master, but to us shes the Rani.

and I cant John Simms but seeing HIM back as the MASTER was refreshing, and he played it brilliantly this time round.

SoupDragon · 03/07/2017 15:52

if it eases the more stubborn and prejudiced amongst us

And there you go. Bullying by belittling those who have a different opinion.

SoupDragon · 03/07/2017 15:54

I hope you and your blinkers are very happy together. hmm

And I hope you manage to get your head removed from your arse. Well done for ruining a fun thread.

I'm off.

StormTreader · 03/07/2017 17:58

Does anyone else think that Missy would regret her choice of a sonic umbrella after a while? The boys can shove their screwdrivers into any random pocket while Missy has to remember to lug her brolly everywhere. I bet shes lost at least one on a bus or train :D Plus if you have to hold it out for a while, its going to get heavy!

RatOnnaStick · 03/07/2017 18:17

I thought the Doctors pockets were all bigger on the inside so surely Missy has the same option to stash her umbrella?

RatOnnaStick · 03/07/2017 18:25

Also on the Bill thing:

Rose had Mickey
Martha pined for the Doctor and had a nice doctor at home
Donna had a fiance that tried to kill her and a fake marriage in The Library
Amy had Rory
Clara had Danny

Why is it such an issue that they show Bill being interested in anyone? Everyone else had something with someone at some point.

RatOnnaStick · 03/07/2017 18:28

I mean Bill's sex life is actually far less prominent than some recent companions.

paxillin · 03/07/2017 18:31

True, Clara's heterosexuality was rather shoved down our throats at times. Danny Pink was such a boring and predictable character, too. Perfect match for Clara. I'm the only one in my family who didn't love Clara. She makes a better Queen Victoria than Dr Who companion.
