Anyone else watching this? On Ch4 now. Looks fascinating ...

OP posts:
llangennith · 23/03/2017 22:35

I've been following 'My 4 Wives' for a few years and it's fascinating! Just like four normal married couples with children except that there's only one husband.

Nellyphants · 23/03/2017 22:37

I think my 4 wives is heavily airbrushed. I AM happy,

TheSecondOfHerName · 23/03/2017 22:38

LDS = Latter Day Saints, as in Church of Jesus Christ & Latter Day Saints.

TheSecondOfHerName · 23/03/2017 22:40

Sorry, I mean Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

'Is there that sort of welfare state in the U.S. Expat? '

There is, especially if you know how to work the system, which they are experts in doing. They get Aid to Families with Dependent Children, 'food stamps', the cards they use there, Medicaid for indigent families, work under lone parent with dependent tax codes since they are not legally married to their 'husband' and accompanying tax breaks, plus working cash in hand.

The last C4 series featured a man with 3 'wives' and 18 children, and his 'first wife' had to stay home with 9 children under 2 (illegal in most states without license and adequate ratio of qualified adults) because if she worked it would throw the couple into the higher-earning tax bracket. So the other two 'wives' went out and worked FT as lone parents with 3 or more children each, qualifying them for a raft of tax breaks and benefit to families with someone working FT, since the system is set up to help families who are in FT work.

expatinscotland · 23/03/2017 22:48

They are not recognised by the Church of LDS. Hence, Enoch baptised his own children. No cleric present.

Nellyphants · 23/03/2017 22:57

It's just all so fucked up isn't it! Getting new 'wives' under the banner of God. Way to many kids than people can handle, breeding a generation of fucked up brain washed miserable kids. I'll stop know, this may have been triggering

EachandEveryone · 23/03/2017 22:58

Do you think they practice corporal punishment?

Dulra · 24/03/2017 08:19

I watched this with equal measure of fascination and horror. It screams of emotional abuse to me. The men are so controlling of everyone. The women are undoubtedly brainwashed the way they look at him with awe and all doe eyed every time he utters a syllable. The fact that he baptises his own children as if he is all holy and superior and they are all his submissive servants. The women's role simply seems to be breed and wait for a few crumbs of his attention which is all on his terms they have no say in their own lives at all from what I could see.

I also wondered what the relationship was between the wives? The family with 2 wives and a potential 3rd seems extremely close and I wondered whether it was also a physical relationship? which would be kinda cool because it could maybe mean the jokes on him and he's being used as a sperm bank Grin.

Next weeks episode seems to focus on the other family and the deeply unhappy pregnant 3rd wife. I hope she gets out and takes her kids with her. Dad can still have as much access as he does now but she could live a freer life away from this Rock.

I always wonder how polygamy seems to favour the male. Rare to hear of any women polygamist with more than one husband

Toddlerteaplease · 24/03/2017 08:40

I wondered about wether the wives in one of the families had a physical relationship as well.

purplecoathanger · 24/03/2017 08:43

Yes these relationships smacked of brainwashing and abuse. Shocking to watch in this day and age. I found the guy considering the third wife beyond creepy.

cushioncovers · 24/03/2017 09:07

Enoch has a terrible cock nose.

Yep that's all I see when I look at him.

Abel seems like a bit of a twat and his couch isn't as happy as Enochs couch.

Aeroflotgirl · 24/03/2017 22:10

Basically the man is having his cake and eating it, he's alright Jack, but the women are just appendages to him, servicing his needs and producing lots of children. My goodness, the men look rough. No thank you.

Aeroflotgirl · 24/03/2017 22:16

This is just wrong on so many levels. Hope the pregnant lady gets out with her kid, and Lydia does not go ahead. The poor kids in this horrid situation, nit if their choosing.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/03/2017 23:51

I want to know if he took that $2000 ring back for a refund!

cushioncovers · 26/03/2017 13:20

It seems to me like Lydia thinks she should join a polygamist marriage as that's how she was raised but actually deep down she doesn't want to, which is why she's had 3 courtships and still hasn't made up her mind.

reuset · 26/03/2017 13:39

I was wondering whether to watch this. Does this go both ways, are the women allowed to have several husbands? That would solve the problem of 'leftover men' Grin

HollyJollyDillydolly · 27/03/2017 11:03

The women in the Enoch clan seemed very close, I'm not sure ifor it's sisterly or more. The pregnant lady providing all the childcare in the 2nd family seemed really unhappy, interested to see more of them Next week.

xmasadsboohiss · 27/03/2017 12:13

Oh god it was compellingly awful. Those men! I'd love to know just how having multiples wives can be construed as a selfless act that makes a man more godlike. The women on the other hands are the patron saints of brainwashing. W.T.A.F.

reuset · 27/03/2017 17:53

Yes. I felt really sorry for her. She looked utterly downtrodden and fed up. I hope she gets out and leaves, if that ever happens, she 'only' had two children I think (looking after many more obviously)

Absolutely awful. Brainwashing and god-like complexes (how bloody arrogant they sounded)

And what long hair some of the women have!

I like the sound of Brother Husbands, Curls!

Pemba · 30/03/2017 03:48

Creepy, creepy culture. It just seems so alien doesn't it? Even though they speak English and wear 'normal' clothes. The po-facedness about themselves and their ridiculous 'religion', the lack of humour, the constant fake smiles, even the weird Utah landscape.

I noticed how several of the wives seemed to look like their husbands too, probably quite a lot of inbreeding going on in that community. Like pps said, how can it work anyway, as roughly equal numbers of boy and girl babies are born, what happens when some men take more than their 'fair share' of wives? A previous poster said young men are 'driven out' by the older men, and then become homeless. Like a pack of wild animals, FGS, lions do this, I think, and several other species. How very holy of them!

At least I suppose they weren't as bad as other fundamentalist LDS communities I have heard of, where the women all wear long dresses and they marry off the girls as teenagers, giving them no choice at all. But if the programme is supposed to be promoting their community, it didn't do a very good job.

hellokittymania · 30/03/2017 03:55

I don't have a TV, but I think this is also on YouTube. I couldn't imagine being somebody's second or third wife.

In Vietnam there used to be a king that had 140 children and who knows how many wives .... he died young . Grin probably too much bickering from his very many wives. Minh Mang what is his name if you want to Google him

GimbleInTheWabe · 30/03/2017 21:05

Anyone else watching? Am babysitting again this week so can watch without DPs running commentary ha
