I am sure that Shirley burnt down muck and Linda's last pub. I remember Linda not letting Shirley stay with them when they first arrived because of this. If she sells the freehold then this'll be their second business she's ruined.

But surely any idiot realises that you just don't sell the freehold, especially in London! Why isn't Lee being made to send money over and start paying back his debts? And yes, Tina and her bucket; such an idiot.

I think I saw them making tea in the living room?

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2017 11:02

i must have missed that bit with the tea hate!! yes to Leek getting away with it all again , everyone seems to have forgotten his part in all this.
Whitney must want a divorce surely?
to be fair to Shirley though, she is between a rock and a hard place - debts growing by the day, an over crowded flat to live in and a very sick dog, the funeral bill must be around 4k or so on its own. If only they would get linda back - her mum cant be that bad that she cannot be left for a few days? at least then she could make the final decisions about some of it, or at least tell her on the phone whats going on. You just would, especially as Shirley must know Max's past isnt that great.

Oreocrumbs · 25/04/2017 11:36

It makes no sense at all to hang so much drama and misfortune on the Carters when the script writers knew Linda was going on maternity leave. They are hardly using so many characters, they could have had a spell while the carters floated on the edge of other stories.

And I'm not even going to start on the freehold stuff 😡😤😡.

Although last night when max and Shirley were in the cafe and he was explaining it to her - the bit I heard sounded like it wasn't a tied house in the usual pub sense so is it just the property freehold? But there was a bit about the rent being linked to turnover so that's pub ish. To be fair I couldn't hear it properly because dd chose that moment to walk in and talk at to me.

Grrrrrrr. I feel a rant coming on. And it all boils down to who owns the property free hold. We have already established that they are completely making up the licensing situation. And the licensees aren't really relevant in this it's who owns the business/property. Grrrrrrr again.

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2017 11:53

Oreo, i am confused as to who owns what - Max may as well been speaking chinese last night for all i understood of it. All Shirley heard was ' more money to do up the pub and get lady di her op' i think. She hasnt any real idea about pubs - Linda and mick are the experts and mick already told Max no a while back to selling on the freehold.
I think that the writers just make it up as they go along, they cant have that much knowledge. They need you to tell them!!

nancy75 · 25/04/2017 11:56

The situation with the kitchen is ridiculous. A ceiling is made of plaster board, skimmed & painted, it's not very heavy. For some reason despite the ceiling having fallen down none of the daft sods have had the common sense to pick up the debris and get rid of it - a ceiling from a room that size would fit in a few bin bags!

Given that there has been no rain has anyone checked that this ridiculous dripping isn't just down to a leaky pipe - that would be the more obvious cause. I know TV script writers probably don't do their own DIY but for gods sake they could do a little bit of research!

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2017 12:01

yes, they could have it all cleared up in no time, at least clear a space and clean up the kitchen so they can cook.
you just would do this, not walk around with a bucket for a dogs operation.

HateSummer · 25/04/2017 12:33

I think if someone owns the freehold then they can do whatever they want with the building so max is lying:

Leasehold means that you have the right to occupy a property for a set period of time (the length of the lease), but do not own the building itself. You will typically have to pay an annual ground rent and potentially a service charge and cannot decide how the building is maintained or run.

You may get a say on this, but ultimately the owner of the building - the freeholder - decides what happens.

The advantage of owning property freehold, or having a share in the freehold of a property, is that you are either totally in control, or have a vote in what happens with the building, and in the latter case any repairs or service charges.

Leasehold is not necessarily a bad way to own a property bit stories abound of homeowners hit with big repair bills and high service charges that they struggle to challenge.

I can't believe I'm googling "freehold" to get a better understanding of what's about to happen in EE 🙄😒. Max's boss is going to smash down the place isn't he. Duh.

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2017 12:41

Hate, its opened my eyes to how things like this work - i had no idea, only ever heard freehold and leasehold in regards to privately owned flats! ( i learn a lot on MN)
I think that EE is out of favour with the tv listings guides too - last few weeks its all been Corrie on the front page and hardly anything about EE. even they are bored with it - more with Denise and Kush, louise and the bullies next week.

Akire · 25/04/2017 13:04

I don't get all the staff at pub now, Shirley , new bloke, Tina, sausage , Whitney and Tracey and Sharon!
But it's all so quiet!! If sausages disatation is in (surely that's for final year?) he only did part of one year so far, he's free to work till October now as well. Someone get a proper job! Lee could be sending back money too plus they have ollies account that babe saved.

Think they need replace roof or will still leak, but made no half assessed attempt to cover it, so expect it to be just and only raining over the Vic for some time to come.

Akire · 25/04/2017 13:05

Wonder if Kush will move into Denise's given she need rent and he dosnt need a two bed does he?

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2017 13:19

its a wonder Kush and Denise havent moved into the Vic, everyone else seems to live there.
or maybe Ben and Jay have a spare room at theirs?

HateSummer · 25/04/2017 13:50

Yeah it's opened my eyes too, to councils, renting, bins, debts and loans...all that stuff that normally gets forgotten in soaps because it's so. bloody. boring.

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2017 13:52

Yep, the new producer is intent on making us bored! I can do that in real, life.

Oreocrumbs · 25/04/2017 14:48

EE needs to stop this licensing crap 'Cos I'm losing valuable real life work time discussing this with my management 😂.

So when talking about the leasehold thing my brother said, it sounds like what we were planning to do a couple of years ago - and that was to buy a pub, fixtures etc and set it away trading. Then lease it out. So someone would lease it from us free from tie (I'll get to that in a minute) and the rent would be £x or x% of the turnover whichever was greater.

Or we could tie them to be supplied by us, turning ourselves into a much bigger operation but we would have to weigh up which would make us more money, they money we'd make selling on our beer for more than we buy it, but that would limit the tenants scope to make as much money, or our % in rent of the tenants turnover.

In that sense we would be being landlords in the property sense. So that's quite simple. Although technically the tenant would be subject to notice periods at any time etc. We didn't actually do this so we never thrashed out the terms of the lease etc.

A tied lease, is where you either take a brewery pub, a brewery loan or just sometimes a deal to free up cash but you are tied to them and their products only for a set period of time or forever in the case of a full lease hold pub. That's pretty much unworkable nowadays. The trade is so tight to get any profit out, that you really need to be able to negotiate hard and play the different breweries off against each other, otherwise you go under very fast.

Sooooooo if I've got the jist of what max is offering, they will buy the building and fixtures, so it's all theirs. And rent it back to the carters. No product tie (cos max isn't in pubs in general). But surely a building that size in London must be worth a fortune..... around a million? I don't know, but certainly more than the £30 - £50k they need to save the dog and pay the debts etc. It would be a ridiculous decision no matter how desperate to get rid of an asset that valuable for such a small amount of debt.

And here endeth today's sermon as I have to leave work and collect my child.

AGnu · 25/04/2017 15:11

I thought Kush owned his flat - didn't his dad help, or Karmel from the divorce settlement? It would make more sense for Denise & Patrick to move in with Kush, given that they only need 2 bedrooms & would get more from selling/renting Patrick's house.

How long before Twitney & BLee hook up? I'm guessing end of the week.

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2017 15:50

Bets are on for a 'twittowoody' hook up eh? Wont be long.

Thank you oreo, pub trade is more complicated than i thought! I thought kush rented, but no,idea really.

youarenotkiddingme · 25/04/2017 16:50

So blue Lee could be called bleek (blue Lee) or leeky (Lee/woody) after his predecessor!

I'm glad someone s explained the value of the freehold. I was thinking the same remit must be worth millions rather than what the debt is iyswim?

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2017 17:34

Bleek! Why i love this thread! ( more than the show)

lazymum99 · 25/04/2017 17:50

The carters must have a mortgage on the freehold of the pub. How on earth would they have been in the position to buy it outright. That property would be worth a couple of million. Shirley can't sell it anyway. Its not hers. The whole thing is daft.

CLEAR UP THE F'ING KITCHEN.

The80sweregreat · 25/04/2017 18:39

They bought it with a big bag of cash Shirl sorted out for them.
The old producer and writers didnt give a fig about leaseholders or freeholders. Made life easier for everyone!
Agree bout kitchen.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 25/04/2017 19:18

Whitney's tinkly laugh and doe eyes have started again. Hmm
I'm thinking her and Woody... Woodney!

nancy75 · 25/04/2017 19:32

And just how much are they selling the freehold for? This is bloody stupid.
I know I say it every episode but I do love Kim Grin

Optimist1 · 25/04/2017 20:00

No matter what else he's doing, Woody deserves a medal for telling Whitney off for making that call to Mick - he spelled it out to her that it's not her business. (Whether she'll let it go is debatable - I was so angry with her arguing with Shirley about the lease decision regardless of how wrong Shirley might be ).

squirrelonapetridish · 25/04/2017 20:12

Why do they always seem to have strippers in the Vic? And everyone gets so excited about them..Donna is a right whinger, just go and lie around with a face mask on in your room not in the lounge where people are playing loud video games. And stop your whinging.

happypoobum · 25/04/2017 20:14

I really thought Whitney and Mick were going to have a thing maybe they did and I missed that episode ?

I like Woodney though Grin
