Starts on Monday 2nd Jan @ 11am (new time) each day.

DH always says, "You can tell it is the new year when this deluded escapism is on!"

I for one will have it on series record. Anyone else joining me to escape to Oz each morning?

Just watched this. The lady really annoyed me! Such a big ask to expect your husband to leave his son at home so you can be nearer your sister. Especially when having made the decision to move out to Brisbane your sister says she's off to Melbourne. She's not as bothered about being close then Grin

Surely flights and costs to come back must have almost reached a years school fees. Seems odd that they gave up so quickly. Home ed could have been a good option in the short term at least, especially as they work evenings. I think there must have been more to it than that.

Heatherbell1978 · 09/02/2017 14:01

You don't pay school fees on a permanent visa which I think a lot of them do get but on other visas you have to. They don't go into these kinds of things on the show which can be misleading. And 'wrong information from an agent'.... perhaps.....but erm, google. 'Do I pay school fees as a migrant to Australia' Takes 5 mins. sigh

Schools are not free in NZ. We pay a $480 'donation' for one child at primary. Then other fees such as activity and mathletics that probably add up to $100. Uniform is extortionate and we have to buy it direct from the school- no tesco's or M and S. Shirts are $47, jumpers $78. I've just forked out $68 for PE kit for one child.

High schools in Auckland can have fees of over $1000 plus significant fees for things like football or rowing.

These are not huge sums and most schools will be a lot lower. But they do add if you have 3 or 4 kids.

Anyone watching today?

I assume that all these families in the update programme end up going...

Heatherbell1978 · 10/02/2017 11:25

Yeah I'm watching. It seems like they have a lot to gain from going but usual elderly parents dilemma.....

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 10/02/2017 11:38

They seem like a lovely family don't they? Fair do's to the mother going back to college as well.

Heatherbell1978 · 10/02/2017 11:42

What a nice ending. Love that she's gone back to college and good on the kids for doing their own thing too!

FloorHugger · 10/02/2017 11:43

Yeah they do seem really nice. Very happy and appreciative.Fair play to them.

greenworm · 10/02/2017 11:48

Seemed to work out well for them, though I can't help but feel sorry for the man's mother, losing her husband and then her son, DIL and 3 grandchildren all moving to the other side of the world. I hope she has plenty of friends / other family to keep her busy.

quarkinstockcubes · 10/02/2017 12:02

Me too green, when he said I haven't sacrificed anything, i was thinking about his poor mum.

I was also a bit Hmm that they can pick up their DGD everyday from school and spend a few hours with her. He supposedly works FT and she is a student and has 3 PT jobs on the go! Doesn't sound in theory like they should be having a lot of free time. They did seem like a lovely family though.

Heatherbell1978 · 10/02/2017 14:11

Anyone watching it on W at the moment? Couple already tried NZ but didn't work out, divorced when they got back and now trying Oz. She's been bitching on camera about him bringing another woman to Sydney and they're constantly bickering. Kids look exasperated.

NancyDonahue · 10/02/2017 16:56

I remember that one Heather. If I remember correctly they split up.

greenworm · 13/02/2017 11:29

Anyone watching?

I'm not very invested in this one really, all the crying is quite offputting and I feel like the mum is just strong arming everyone into going along with her.

fourquenelles · 13/02/2017 11:37

I am watching and I feel a bit uncomfortable about the amount of responsibility for the decision either way which has been put on the young girls.

MistyMeena · 13/02/2017 11:38

Feel so sorry for the girls who really don't want to go!

Turbinaria · 13/02/2017 11:41

I'm just wondering what work skills the parents have that is in demand in Oz and secure them a visa. Also their UK house is worth about half of the places they looked at?

greenworm · 13/02/2017 11:55

I am watching and I feel a bit uncomfortable about the amount of responsibility for the decision either way which has been put on the young girls.

I know...I moved (within the UK) quite a few times as a child/teen, and I was never given a say in it! I think it's the parents' job to make the decision to move having decided it's in the family's overall best interests. Kids should then be told what's happening and supported to make the best of it, rather than going through all this pre-move agonising, when a lot of the time they're not going to be capable of understanding the ins and outs of it all or imagining the reality of a move.

That said, today was a classic example of an episode where there really wasn't a clear reason for thinking the move was in the family's best interests. The mum just had itchy feet and a fantasy about living in Australia.

khaleesi71 · 13/02/2017 12:03

My friend is going on this soon and we'll be uk friends sending them on their way. They applied and then are told where they will go - which isn't where they've applied for visas!! Lucky things 😎

NancyDonahue · 13/02/2017 12:20

Another waste of time watching one where they haven't gone yet!

fourquenelles · 13/02/2017 12:31

Glad it's not just me greenworm Smile

Toddlerteaplease · 13/02/2017 14:39

Watched it this morning for the first time in ages. Felt very sorry for the rest of the family who clearly didn't want to go. It was just mums dream. Did they go in the end?

NancyDonahue · 13/02/2017 14:45

There's an update on the website and facebook page toddler. Basically, they still live in the UK and are still planning their move to OZ. Lots of mother going on and on and on, father looking pained and daughter crying. So not much of a 'revisited' Hmm

greenworm · 14/02/2017 11:23

Aw, I want it to work out for this family but the finances don't look promising.

I love that the dad's dream was to build a crazy golf course, I didn't see that coming.

Princecharlesfirstwife · 14/02/2017 11:42

I'm surprised how easy it seems to be able to emigrate though. On the face of it both parents must be over 40, neither had specific desirable skills, adult children without specific skill sets and a pre existing chronic health condition. It's nice to see they're happy though.
